Dick,
That's more or less the approach I took.
The shack computer is a Lenovo laptop (bought specifically because at the time
it was the only thing still offered with XP). I do QSLing, awards tracking, etc.
on a Dell desktop that was running Vista.
I put a second hard drive in the desktop and installed Win 7 on it. This
belt-and-suspenders approach left everything intact in the old drive. Being a
glutton for punishment, I shortly thereafter took the advice of my IT manager
son and put in a SSD and did the whole exercise again :-) I then used the
original drive in the second slot for data (since replaced with a larger
capacity drive)
After this success I did the same thing with the shack laptop, albeit with a
smaller capacity SSD. For data storage I got a carrier that holds a hard drive
and plugged it into the optical drive slot.
