[Dxbase] [dxbase] Why to never run DXbase on VISTA/Windows7 in the Program Files directory - wa6axe

The transition from XP to Vista/W7 has been difficult for
many ham programs, and a lot of non-ham programs too. But in truth
Microsoft did provide plenty of warning. The programming standards for
XP provided for separating 'programs' (which belong in c:\program
files\) from 'user data' (which belongs elsewhere, such as in 'my
documents'). These recommendations were widely ignored, because you
could! With Vista/W7 this is being enforced, largely through nuisance
UAC popups. In Windows 8 perhaps it will really be enforced...we will
see.
When one actually complies with their 'recommendations' things work well.
I have just completed writing a Vista/W7 compliant installer for the BPQ32 software package. When using it to update a current install it
allows you to remain non-compliant if you insist, but will reorganize
your existing installation to get in compliance if you wish. New installs offer the proper locations for Vista/W7 (and even for new XP installs). When you go with the recommended locations everything works perfectly. No
nagging UAC popups, no mystery Virtual Store issues.
When Neal gets his Vista/W7 compliant release done all these irksome issues will be a thing of the past.
Keep in mind that Microsoft's recommendations are part of it's battle with
the virus creators. Is Microsoft winning? I am not sure, but XP was a
gold mine for the virus creators.
