I think that their upgrade process will only upgrade like for like (so 32
bit Vista for 32 bit Win7, etc).

You do not need 64 bit, much better with 32 bit if you want to upgrade right
now.

Having said that, I wud recommend you not do the upgrade process and do a
"clean" install then reload all of your programs. You will be much happier
in the long run even though its a real pain in the butt.
