I got a prompt reply from Eric, VE3GSI, who pointed out the following:

In order for software to show a constant readout of both mode and frequency,
two thing must exist, constant polling of the rig and software that displays
the frequency. DXBase does neither, the short answer is the frequency and
mode only get entered to the log, after you enter a call and you tab to the
next field. ...

That was the hint I needed to successfully interface the radio and the DXBase 2006.
I would be glad to shre the details of the radio and software and port settings with anyone who wants them.
