[Dxbase] Grid Square Numbers and DXBase

I need a grid square expert(s),
 
Not to long ago I gave a friend of mine a QSL card with my grid square
location of FN14MF on it that was generated and printed by DXBase 2006.
After looking over the card he said the last two letters of my grid location
should be in lower case?  I did not give it much thought at the time and
made a mental note to change it in my options in DXBase, which did I try
later with no success.  
 
It seems no matter what I try in the Gridsquare entry window option, the
last two letters of my grid square is mapped to UPPER case.
 
A quick check on the internet shows 6 figure grid squares as FN14mf. Even
LoTW downloads have lower case suffixes, yet DXBase converts all to upper
case.
 
So I ask, is my friend wrong? Is DXBase wrong?  Does the grid square format
have a standard or does it matter? Is this something that should be put on
the DXB wish list?
