[Dxbase] DXBase 2006 - staying connected to DSL

When you try another telnet program for connection, don't use one that
does auto-reconnection, that will mask the problem. Just connect using
a simple telnet client, such as HyperTerminal which comes packaged with
Windows. Or you can just click Start, then Run, and type telnet 'url of
cluster you wish to connect to'. That will give you the very basic
telnet, but as it runs in default it doesn't echo characters, and I am
not sure about carriage-return, line-feeds etc. I would test using
HyperTerminal.
As to your router, yes you could try updating the firmware, but first
how about doing a master reset on it. Usually there is a little hole in
the box thru which you can push a paperclip to do a master reset.
Sometimes master reset is available from the web interface. Of course
if you do this you will loose any setup you have done. So if you have
done some special setup, such as forwarding certain ports to specific
machines on your LAN, you will have to think carefully about doing this!
It was suggested you might want to forward tcp port 23 traffic to the
machine on your LAN where you are having trouble....I don't recommend
this. It should not be necessary, if your router is working properly
all incoming packets for your telnet connection are 'solicited' and will
be sent to the correct computer on your LAN. I maintain reliable telnet
connections from home thru either my LinkSys or DLink router without
setting up any special forwarding.
Another thing to try would be to connect to a different cluster, you may
wish to try mine at 'dxspots.com'. I know my connection to the internet
is quite reliable.
Finally, if all else fails, consider using AR-User, a free program you
can pick up at http://www.ve7cc.net/ It will work aggressively to
maintain and if need be reconnect automatically.
