Normally, USB to serial adapters are tolerant of baud, and stop bit discrepancies, but
make sure that if yours allows changes to set it to the 4800, 2 stop bits, required by
most rigs, (not sure what the Kenwood requires).
Check simple things first. (forgive me if you already thought of that)

The above URL will take you to the brand new, just announced this week, SPECIALY made USB
to rig interface that will overcome many of the problems associated with USB.

I have one on order, have not received it as yet, but will provide a review after
testing/using it for a while.

But I do know Jozep, a well know contester, so I have high hopes for the unit.

Now to answer your questions.
I have had other USB to serial adapters also not work properly.
Some will work with my rotor control, some will work with PTT.
But many will NOT work in all cases.

But there is hope.
The interface that has been the most reliable is the Belkin F5U103 which is available on
Ebay for around $12.00.
I bought a couple.

While the above URL is specific to USB and FSK, it does explain the problem and give
reviews on the various USB to serial and their compatibility.
