The price of a Celeron 1 meg machine with cd-rw, 128/256mb of
memory, lots of usb and 2 serial ports is so low ($500-600) that
you should seriously reconsider doing it on a laptop. I have
laptops and basic desktops dxbase networked...but I wouldn't want
to run my only log on a laptop that is so easy to carry off. Of
course, this advice doesn't apply if you're going to carry the
$3k unit on a dx vacation trip. A nice used off-lease unit will
do. (see www.micomp.com)
The lack of ports: serial/parallel/usb can be a real factor to
consider. Some have reported luck when running usb converters,
while other users can never seem to get it working. But watching
the dxbase spots on a wireless network adapter out on the deck is
pretty neat though, especially if the beer is cold.
