Thanks Jack,
  I'll bet you " a dollar to a doughnut" I must have had some unseen
corruption in the cut and pasted text I used which came right out of
Firebrick original message here on the list..and he had trouble
too....well I am glad the mystery is solved....

 And as a precaution I am no longer going to paste into the hosts file
whether it be within DXBase or in my favorite text editor (EmEditor)
