[Dx4win] Program OK now

Hello Brad,

I'm no computer expert, but, Zoran's option #1 works for me. I have not had
any trouble with updates, but the options shown on my computer are slightly
different than what Zoran lists. (WIN10 Pro v22H2)
Mine gives me the option to "Restart this device as soon as possible..." and
I have that one turned OFF. I get a notice when it downloads an update and
wants to restart. Naturally, I close every program before restarting. It
also gives the option to pause updates for up to a month.
Other folks have mentioned that you should NOT update your drivers if they
are working properly.

As others have mentioned, you absolutely SHOULD backup your log (and other
important files) to a USB drive, the cloud, or both.

I have been using dx4win since 1997 (v1.10) and, like many others, have
never had the kinds of problems you mention.

The program DOES NOT LIKE power outages and it DOES NOT LIKE Microsoft
updates. I had bought a UPS (uninterruptible power supply) to take care of
the power outage problem, but so far, I have not yet been successful in
getting the Microsoft updates blocked. If anyone has a sure method of
blocking the Microsoft updates, I would very much like to receive
information on that.

It's been a while since I did it, but I believe it takes either the first
method, or possibly both:

*1
*

*To change Windows 10 automatic updates to manual, go to your system
settings, navigate to "Update & Security" > "Windows Update" > "Advanced
options", then under "Restart options", toggle the switch to disable
"Automatically restart" - effectively making updates download and install
automatically, but requiring you to manually restart your computer to
complete the process.*

*2*

*Open Services: Press Windows key + R, type "services.msc" and press Enter.
Find Windows Update: Scroll down to locate "Windows Update".
Change Startup Type: Right-click on "Windows Update", select "Properties",
and change "Startup type" to "Manual".
Apply Changes: Click "Apply" and then "OK".
*

The above should not block the updates, but it should let you restart
Windows manually, i.e. when you allow it and not when your computer
decides to reboot itself.

Also, a lot of DX4Win users apparently like to live dangerously, having
no log backup at all. A simple thumb drive should be mandatory on your
PC - set it up in your DX4Win configuration as the "Secondary Backup
Directory". Next, you should have another backup drive for manually (or
on the fly if you want it done by a third party s/w) backing up your
data, and not just for DX4Win. And finally, your last resort should be
all your QSOs uploaded to LoTW. Do all these, use them regularly, and
there is no way you can ever lose any QSOs.
