[Dx4win] operating CW from keyboard and keyer without unplugging

Blair,
Since I have the external keyer with more bells and whistles than the keyer in the TS-850, I won't be using the internal keyer.
I read somewhere a long time ago about adding the RCA-type jack to the back of the TS-850. Thanks for reminding me about it.
I appreciate your help and encouragement.

Ed,
Another keying solution that you might consider for the TS-850 is the installation of an RCA phono jack on the back panel of the rig. This jack is then connected to the keying circuit on the IF Board. You can then plug your computer serial port cable into the new phono jack and use the existing quarter inch phone jack for connecting keyer paddles to the internal keyer (set the keying switch to 'int').
This modification allows you to use the internal keyer or a computer keyboard (or an external keyer or "bug") to key the rig without having to change cables or switch settings. The modification takes about a half hour if you work slowly. I have used this modification for years with DX4WIN and various contest programs, and it has worked flawlessly.
If you (or others) are interested, please let me know off-line, and I will be glad to send you photos and circuit diagrams describing the modification.

Barry, Dave, Dan, Thanks for your encouragement and advice. It looks like it is going to work. Here is a little background information for those who might be interested. The switch on the back of the TS-850 near the key jack is set to "manual" so as not to use the internal keyer. The keying voltage of the TS-850 is 5 volts at about 1 mA. It has a positive keying line. I''ve got a "Y" connector. The plug that goes into the jack on the TS-850 is wired correctly (it makes a difference if the 1/4" plug is mono or stereo). The line from the serial port of the computer will plug into one branch of the "Y" and the line from the keyer to the other branch. The Heathkit Model SA-5010 microMatic Memory Keyer dates from 1982. The keyer output is rated at +250 volts @ 100 mA (or -200 volts @ 40 mA) so it can be used for either positive or negative keying lines. It uses transistor switching, not a relay, but at these ratings I think there should be little strain on the transistors. I believe the keyer was designed to be used on transceivers with tubes. My next step is to build or buy a serial cable. There are plenty of diagrams for building one of these. Got to look in my parts boxes. 73 de Ed, AA9OZ -----Original Message----- From: "Dan Violette" [danki6x at socal.rr.com] Date: 01/09/2013 09:29 PM To: "'Ed Douglass'" <aa9oz at doorpi.net>;, dx4win at mailman.qth.netSubject: RE: [Dx4win] operating CW from keyboard and keyer without unplugging As others said, yes should work. Make sure the small switch on the back of the TS-850 is on manual keying (not using internal keyer). Since you are using basically 2 external keyers (on/off keying of the line), either keying will key the radio. What I am trying to accomplish is to be able to operate CW from a keyboard OR a paddle/keyer without having to unplug one and plug in the other. Thanks for your advice. 73 de Ed, AA9OZ ______________________________________________________________ DX4WIN mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dx4winHelp: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htmPost: mailto:DX4WIN at mailman.qth.netThis list hosted by: http://www.qsl.netPlease help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html______________________________________________________________ DX4WIN mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dx4winHelp: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htmPost: mailto:DX4WIN at mailman.qth.netThis list hosted by: http://www.qsl.netPlease help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
