Jon,
This is a common problem with DX4WIN and Windows 7. It's because Windows is
shutting the port off as a power saving measure, disconnecting the radio.
Here's a couple of messages from the list that have a potential solution.
>From Bud, N7CW:
Your computer may be putting the USB port to sleep. In Windows 7 try this:
Control Panel, Hardware and Sound, Power Options. Next to Recommended
Settings, select Change Plan Settings. Then click Change Advanced Power
Settings. Click the + next to USB Settings. Click the + next to USB
Selective Suspend Setting. If you click on the Setting: Enable, you will
get a drop down box that allows you to change it to Disable.

I addition to what Bud has suggested, right click on the Computer icon,
Select Properties, click on "Device Manager", Open Universal Serial
Bus controllers, select *each* USB Root Hub and "Generic USB Hub"
entry, select the "Power Management" tab and *uncheck* the box marked
"Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power".
Apparently you need to follow both sets of steps to stop Windows from
shutting down the USB port.
