[Dx4win] DX4WIN Digest, Vol 86, Issue 10

I've just spent hours trying to get the F3 key callsign lookup to work even
with the help of the application note. The problem I had was using the data
downloaded direct from QRZ.com. The data needs data needs to be installed
direct to C:\ and not via Program Files, but the update from QRZ doesn't
give you that option, so you have to do a complete install or update the
files manually.

I am a subscriber to xml interface, so I would like this update soonest
please!

Does the QSO Lookup F3 button do anything if you only have QRZ.com
website configured? Or does it require a CDROM copy to function? 73, Byron

No, it requires data from the CDROM. No matter what lookup system
you're using, if the Callsign/Mgr Lookup (F3) window is open, typing
ENTER in that window (when it has focus) will do a QRZ.COM lookup,
assuming DX4WIN is configured properly (see the QRZ application note I
wrote at http://dx4win.ad1c.us)

I have asked Paul several times to add QRZ.COM lookup via the XML
interface (for subscribers), which could replace the local callbook
lookup (i.e. a single F3 would do the lookup and populate the
Callsign/Mgr Lookup window, no ENTER needed). Maybe if enough people
ask for this, it may happen some day.

I am not a subscriber to qrz xml but if Paul adds this i 'll subscribe for
sure. It is nice to have...

Hi Folks,

After I tried to generate an updated VUCC worked/needed map this
weekend (and Guy ON4AOI asked a related question), I decided to make a
Windows GUI version of this program (you can see a picture of it
here):

    http://dx4win.ad1c.us/vucc/

I haven't had time to work on new documentation yet (trust me, it
won't be anything close to the DX4WIN Data Updater documentation).
Here is the new ZIP file for testing:

        http://dx4win.ad1c.us/vucc/dx4wvucc_20110614.zip

This is a test release - it reports as version 2.9 but the official
release will be version 3.0.

Installation is the same as before:

"Just extract the ZIP file to a directory on your hard drive."

Make sure to extract the whole ZIP file so you get all the field name
images. Now navigate to, and run the vucc.exe (program) you just
extracted. You'll see a real Windows program! The Windows program
requires the same inputs as the command-line version (it should be
obvious how to enter them). It does do some basic checks on the
inputs you provide. After you have entered or selected the desired
fields/options, click on the Generate button and it will tell you how
many grid squares are in the "map" it created. Then click on the View
button to see the map in your web browser. At this point, you can
print the file from the browser. Remember that there are background
images for the field names, so in the printer Page Setup, make sure to
check the box next to "Print Background (colors and images)". You can
click on "Help" to go the documentation web page, or on the blue icon
in the upper-left to see the version information.

Let me know what problems you find, or what features you'd like added.
I'm still trying to find away to indicate grids valid for the Fred
Fish Memorial Award (FFMA). I heard today that KM0A just finished up!
 I'm not sure why W9RPM (a DX4WIN user) isn't done yet (I thought he
had all the QSOs).

Today I wanted to see how many VUCC grids I have confirmed on LoTW
(since moving to CO in 2007). My logbook said 102 confirmed, but VUCC
said only 96 confirmed. How could that be?

The other station uploaded our QSO, but the station record with which
they signed it (using TQSL) did not include the grid square! This
means my log thinks the grid is confirmed, but because LoTW does not
have the other station's grid square, the grid is not confirmed. At
least one of the QSOs was from the most recent ARRL June VHF QSO Party
(2011).

I have sent E-mail to the eight (8) stations (out of 102) that did not
sign their QSOs with their grid square, with instructions how to fix
the problem. I wonder how many will do so.

73 - Jim AD1C

p.s. my other pet peeve is when I send a QSL (and SASE) saying,
"Thanks for the new grid" and the QSL I receive in return does not
have the grid square on it. Argh!

Even though I have not submitted a VUCC application yet, I'll need to
write a new program to make sure my VUCC credits match my log book.
Remember this program?

    http://dx4win.ad1c.us/lotw/

Yes, VUCC will need a similar program. Think of it as being on the
list, but no time frame yet.
