Then you'll keep logging PSK QSOs even when your radio switches back
to, or you work someone on CW or SSB.  Fixing it after the fact seems
like a safer option to me.

If you are using the PSK window built into DX4WIN, you can double
click on a call to start the logging process, and the QSO window will
get the PSK mode automatically.
