Yes, Fred - that is a correct assumption. You'll need some form of interface 
(serial/parallel) into your computer to get it to work.

For my G-800dxa interface, I bought an old mouse for $1 at a hamfest and 
sacrificed it as my mini-DIN plug/cable.
