Kostas and Mel,

Thanks for your suggestion.  Each of you had part of the solution: the 
CI-V setup must have transceive set at OFF and the Packet 1 
preferences screen must be set to ignore the "update USO window." 
Neither of these alone seem to do the trick, but with both of the 
setup as described works like a charm.

Thanks very much to both of you (and all the other D4W'iners out there 
who are so quick to share their knowledge and expertise with the 
software --- and especially Jim, AD1C, who seems to be the godfather 
of all of us in getting things working correctly).
