That's not surprising. DX4WIN assumes that it is the only software
talking to the rig. When you start up HRD and it starts sending
commands to the rig, DX4WIN will see responses it does not expect and
doesn't know how to handle them. If you can configure VSPE so that the
HRD virtual port is read-only (that is, it's not able to send commands
to the rig) then DX4WIN will probably work just fine. I don't know if
HRD will continue to work well enough for you in this configuration or
not.
