There's a check box in the preferences to control this.

Go to File -> Preferences, click on the Packet1 tab, and uncheck the box that says, "Update QSO Window".

Re my last post, I find that the QSO entry mode follows the last spot mode,
even though I am not connected.  Only if I clear all spots do I get the
default mode.
