I have seen a similar problem on my HP laptop after I tried to load
Windows while minimizing the HP-centric 'helper' programs that are
usually loaded at the same time. I have been meaning to reformat and
load a non-HP version of Windows to see if that cures the problem but
have not done so yet, since I only use the laptop with DX4WIN when
traveling. I have been told by a computer repair shop that trying to
load Windows w/o the computers supplier's self-serving programs usually
causes problems.
The characteristics of the hangup are as you describe with the CPU's
consumption of usage at 99-100%.

Until today February 15, my last hang was on January 22. Sometimes it takes that long, sometimes it happens 2 times in 3 days. Totally unpredictable and very intermittent.
