Your system has no way of knowing "a sudden shut down" is about to occur,
so all it can do is write data to your primary log file when you tell it to
or to a backup log file as often as you schedule it to. To your computer,
a sudden shut down is like you or me being blind-sided by a truck, without
time for us to even blink, let alone make sure our will is up to date. :)

Yup. I run my logging computer off of an uninterruptable power supply
(UPS) so I always have plenty of time to shut things down.
