You're correct Jim,
It are the Microsoft updates that causes most of the shit !!!!!!!!!!!!!
I turned of my auto updates since Jeff Steinman N7YG posted
This on 17 april 2006
==========================================================================
If you are using a Win XP product and have automatic updates enabled, or
have updated you systems in the past couple of day, you may have installed
update KB908531. This update is a security update to verify COM Automation
type of objects.
In Micro$oft's normal manner of "it compiles, release it" philosophy, they
have created a number of problems for Explorer, Office products, WinZip,
anything involving HP and a number of other software products that use COM
technology.
You may have discovered a program called verclsid.exe running in your task
manager, or perhaps a number of these suckers as I discovered. You may have
also discovered that things just come to a screeching halt for a few minutes
then resumes. This is because most firewalls will not allow this program to
execute properly.
Micro$oft has finally admitted there is a problem with this update and is
recommending that users do not install it or remove it. This comes from
their tech support folks.
To check if you have this update installed do the following:
Click Start | Control Panel | Add/Remove programs Click Show Updates and
make sure it is checked.
Scroll through the list until you see KB908531. If it is there you will
need to remove it.
If you have automatic updates enabled, I suggest you disable it prior to
removing this update, otherwise, it will reinstall itself.
Once the removal is complete, you will need to reboot the computer.
After reboot. open the web browser and go the Microsoft Update site:
http://update.microsoft.com
Click the custom box and when the update for KB908531 shows up, check the
box to hide the update so it is not installed in the future. Disregard
Microsoft security warning that will be displayed because this updates is
hidden.

Probably there are more of these updates that causes problems. Sometimes
They are solved with later upgrades but some you need to uninstall manually
Wonder when they stop will stop with the upgrades!
Then we will be complaining even more........
I had Vista installed on a test PC
Result: no more LPT ports or Serial ports are recognized or supported ......
USB to SERIAL is working with some brands but not with all (for PTT-CW-FSK)
But USB to parallel is only supporting printers not all I/O
Can be dedicated anymore.

It's not your radio!
I never had this problem in DX4WIN, until I recently (within last couple of
months) had to install Windows XP from scratch. Now I have the problem
occasionally. My CPU usage is near 0%. I have an ICOM, not Orion radio.
I'm
using the microHAM microKeyer as my radio interface. I have McAfee
AntiVirus
running, but that's about it.
As I said, the problem just developed recently. I wonder if one of
Microsoft's
recent updates cause it?
