That was it!

I had just gone over the Preferences minutely, screen by screen, but my old
eyes failed to see that check box. Dunno if it was checked by default or if
I inadvertently checked it during initial setup.

For what it is worth, it works fine for me.  Do you by any chance have
"Show Seconds in Time" selected in QSO Preferences?  This might force you
to enter a six-digit time (I haven't tried it).
