David,
[my apologies - this reply does not directly answer your USB to Serial
question]
I do not use a TNC, but use DX4WIN with MMTTY, and cross-connect the two
programs using the free "null modem software" utility from MixW [two virtual
comm ports talking to each other just like hardware comm ports with a null
modem cable between them]. The arrangements allows you to run RTTY in either
full sound card mode or sound-card receive and transmitter FSK transmit mode
(which is what I prefer, YMMV). The combination permits DX4WIN to deliver CW
and PSK31 modes, and MMTTY in either standalone {which is how I run RTTY
most of the time} or DX4WIN-connected {which is how I run RTTY for contests}
configurations.
To accomplish this, my computer needs either Windows2000 or WindowsXP, and
two comm ports -- one is standard on the computer motherboard and the other
is via a ByteRunner dual serial card. The ByteRunner card also has a
parallel port on it, but due to software/driver issues is not accessible
under Win2K or WindowsXP as a DX4WIN parallel port.
I have written a couple of pages of "how to" instructions for getting MMTTY
and DX4WIN working together - last I checked John WA9ALS had them on his web
site - or I can send them to you as email attachments.
