I use the CT-17 for the ICOMs and a MAX232 homebrew interface for the 
Kenwood. Three wire control only, RXD, TXD & GND.

 >4.  Have you made any useful changes to the driver you chose?

No, the existing driver works for me.  But I would like to be able to 
make some changes like filter control, etc.
