You can never predict when power is going to fail, but you can try to
minimize the likelihood of losing data:
1. Put your PC on a battery backup UPS. There have been a lot of cheap
ones on sale recently as APC rolls out their new models. You should be
able to get a decent one (300VA) for under $50. You can make the backed-up
power last longer if you plug in only the PC and not the monitor
(especially for those of us who have 17-21" monitors). However you'll be
"in the dark" trying to save your log and/or shutting down the PC. Most
power glitches are only a few minutes in duration anyway (I'm making this
up, are there statistics anywhere?). We have several at home, including
the cable modem and router, so we can continue to surf even when power is
out (unless the town loses power).
2. Don't walk away from the shack if there is an unsaved log. When I get
up, if the "modified" meter is still RED, I'll hit ALT-B to backup
immediately. ALT-S works just as well. Then I know my log is on disk
somewhere.
