Mark,
I ran in that configuration for a while. I'm not sure exactly
where to start. Of course, you can simply ignore radio control and there's
nothing to it, but I assume that you want to connect your rig up and have
it automatically tune, report frequency, etc. You'll first need a computer
interface, a CI-V or clone for starters. There are a lot of those available
or you can make one yourself (you might be better off inquiring on one of
the Icom groups if you need help with that). Once you've got that set up
and plugged into a serial port, basically you're going to go to the
Preferences menu, and on the Radio tab, select the radio type (I think
there's a 706 radio type in there), baud rate, radio address (I don't
recall what the default is for the 706 MkIIG; I changed mine a while back
and don't remember what it is, but you can access it by holding down the
Lock button while powering on; rotate the channel button until you get to
item 34, labelled "CI-V Address"; just power off and on to save the
settings and exit) and select the COM port. The RTS and DTR setting may
depend on the interface you're using; some interfaces get their power from
one of those lines (mine does).

That's the general overview, I'll do my best to walk you through
the specifics as best I can when you let me know how far you've gotten and
what you've done so far.

         Good luck.
