CQ NEWS (Press Release, dated October 6th). Rich Moseson, W2VU, CQ Editor, sent out the following: "Mark Wohlschlegel, WC3W, Named CQ DX Marathon Director Succeeds John Sweeney, K9EL" -- Mark Wohlschlegel, WC3W, has been appointed as Director of the CQ DX Marathon, CQ Editor Rich Moseson, W2VU, announced today. Mark succeeds John Sweeney, K9EL, who has held the post since the program was reinstituted in 2006. An electrical engineer, Mark has been a ham radio operator since age 12. He currently lives in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, with his wife of 49 years. Both his wife and two adult children are licensed hams. Due to antenna restrictions in his home community, Mark and a ham friend have built a remote station about 80 miles from his home QTH (photos on QRZ.com). Mark and his wife spend about five months of each year in Grand Lake, Colorado, where he has a small HF station and a UHF repeater. Mark's operating preferences are CW, FT8, and SSB, in that order. He routinely chases DX on all bands. Besides amateur radio, Mark flies single engine airplanes, enjoys motorcycle riding and sailing, and is a musician in his church. Wohlschlegel says his goals for the DX Marathon program include working to double participation over the next 3-5 years by increasing the number of categories and encouraging greater participation by DX clubs around the world. "I want to thank John Sweeney for getting the DX Marathon up and running in 2006 and guiding it successfully through the past 16 years," said Moseson. "Building an activity like this from the ground up is a huge challenge. I also look forward to working with Mark in the future. I am very impressed with his dedication to the DX Marathon program and his vision for its future." Wohlschlegel will take over as DX Marathon director with the 2023 running of the year-long activity. --------------------------------------------------------- CR5, PORTUGAL. QSL via CS5ARC. CY0S SABLE ISLAND DXPEDITION NEWS. The following was posted on the CY0S Sable Island DXpedition Web page (https://t-rexsoftware.com/cy0s/news.htm), October 5th: A lot of DXers have inquired about Sable Island after Hurri- cane Fiona made an almost direct hit on the island. Hurricane Fiona had the lowest barometric pressure (931 MB) ever recorded in Canada during any previous hurricane. Fortunately, the news is better than expected on Sable Island. Parks Canada personnel on the island report some of the buildings lost sections of siding and some roof damage. The Parks Canada personnel described the damage as superficial. The NavCan METAR (Meteoro- logical Terminal Air Report) system was inoperative for 5-6 days until technicians could travel to the island to restore the system. The hurri- cane caused some erosion and reshaped part of the island. A researcher who has been on the island for almost 50 years reported it was the worst storm she has ever experienced on the island. D4, CAPE VERDE. Noah, K2NG usually does some type of multi-op operation in the ARRL DX Contests and is always looking for operators. I'm listening on 10 meters today and it's wide open to EU. The ARRL Ten Meter contest could be really fun from down there this year. See https://pj4g.com for more information. Note that a COVID-19 vaccine or test is no longer required to travel to Bonaire. If you have any questions you can also email me directly. PJ4, BONAIRE. [edited] "The 2023 Sable Island CY0S DXpedition team is very pleased to announce a very generous offer from a well known DX'er and DXpeditioner. This DX'er has offered to match any donations to the CY0S DXpedition from this point forward until arrival on the Island on March 20, 2023. For example, if a contributor donates 100 USDs to the DXpedition, this 100 USDs will then be matched for a total of 200 USDs.! The DX'er making the match offer wishes to remain anonymous but wanted to support this DXpedition in a unique and special way. The CY0S team is very grateful and thankful for this tremendous show of support for our DXpedition effort. The CY0S team is hard at work on the antennas for the DXpedition. Yagi antennas will be used for 10-20 meters. A Hygain LJ-105CA, ten meter mono- bander has been assembled and checked out. A Hygain LJ-153BA, 15 meter monobander has been assembled and checked out. This week, a Hygain 203-BA, 20 meter monobander will be assembled and checked out. The Cushcraft A3WS 12/17 duobander has been back ordered but is expected to be shipped to us in January from our major sponsor DX Engineering. Bob, K4UEE, will be building our low band antenna system, again with major support from DX Engineering. The team is continuing to manage and fine tune gear based on the very strict weight limitations for the DXpedition. The team is limited to a total of 2965 lbs, which includes the weight of the operators, radio gear, antennas, antenna mast, long mast stakes for the loose sand, coaxial cables, food (freeze dried/MRE's) and personal gear. Every pound of weight counts and this is a huge challenge. Repair work has begun on Sable Island from the damage from intense hurricane Fiona. Sable Aviation, one of our partners, is busy flying siding, roofing materials and construction personnel to the island. Repairs are expected to be completed this Fall." 73, Murray WA4DAN March 20-29, 2023 Sable Island CY0S DXpedition Team Leader D4, CAPE VERDE (HF/Satellite Op). Harald, DF2WO, will once again be active as D44TWO from Praia, Santiago Island (AF-005), between January 3-21st, 2023. Activity will be holiday style on 160-6 meters using CW, SSB and the Digital modes. He states that he works mostly on the Digital modes (FT8, PSK31, JT65 and RTTY) and slow CW. He will be using an Icom 7300, 2 Transverters with 3 watts output on ES-Hail using the QO-100 Geostationary Satellite. He will also have a FT-450D into a homemade HEX BEAM and a dipole for 40 meters. QSL via M0OXO (OQRS available). ED1, SPAIN. Operators Jose/EA1AIW, Ruben/EA1DQE, Senio/EA1FHQ, Guido/ EA1FPN, Carlos/EA1HWD, Fabian/EB1TR and Ger/EC1A will be active as ED1B from Asturias, Spain, during the CQWW DX SSB Contest (October 29-30th) as a Multi-Single/Low-Power entry. QSL via EC1A. EG2, SPAIN (Halloween Award). Members of the HamRadioDx will be active as EG2HAM between 0000z, October 25th and 2359z, November 1st, to cele- brate the holiday event activity with three Special HalloWeen Diplomas and cash prizes in commemoration of the Halloween year 2022. Activity has been on 80/60/40/30/20/ 17/15/10 meters CW, PSK, and RTTY with 100 watts. QSL via F6BWJ or LoTW. FT5/W, CROZET ISLAND (Update). The "Les Nouvelles DX" (LNDX) reports that Thierry, F6CUK, states that he will return home at the end of March 2023. However, he states that his operations will have to cease on January 26th (2023), and he will only be able (authorized) to use QO-100 until his departure. The canteens with the equipment have arrived on Reunion and will be loaded on the boat for an arrival in Crozet in mid-November. All the equipment should therefore be on site for its arrival. See the pictures of the canteens on the Crozet 2022 Web page at: http://crozet2022.r-e-f.org/journal-de-bord.html FT4/Y, ANTARCTICA (Update to OPDX.1576). Jean-Michel, F6AJA, editor of the LNDX, reports the following [edited]: David, F4FKT, leaves on October 18th to join his group in Tasmania where he will be VK7/F4FKT/P. They stay there for 8 days to leave, by plane, for the Italian base of Zucharelli in Antarctica. David will be active as IA0/F4FKT/P. Then after 3-5 days, he will be on the way to Concordia by plane where he will be there until the end of January/beginning of February where he will be active as FT4YM/P with perhaps a QSY at Dome C. Then he is expected to drive the convoy which goes to the Prudhomme base (Dumont d'Urville logistics base); duration of the trip 10 to 12 days where he will be FT4YM. And finally return by boat for an arrival around March 15th in Tasmania. Of course, this all depends on the weather. He carries an ICOM 7300 and 500W amplifier (F6HEJ), a laptop PC and a vertical antenna. Traffic will be on 20m on SSB and FT4/FT8. HS0, THAILAND. IDXC NEWS (International DX Convention IOTA Dinner; Press Release). IOTA Friends -- If you avid DX'ers, you probably know that the Inter- national DX Convention (IDXC) in Visalia, California, is returning in April 2023 after a long hiatus from COVID. Deo Gratias! That means our in-person IOTA Dinner will also return. Our Dinner will again be held in the Marriott Hotel, next door to the Convention Center, as in recent years. We have a page on the official IDXC web site, which will be updated in February or March when I am ready to start taking Dinner reservations. For now, you may want to bookmark this page: https://www.dxconvention.com/pages/dinners-iota.html That covers 2023. What about 2022? Since the 2022 International DX Convention was cancelled, I plan to host another "Virtual (online) Dinner" next month via Zoom as we did the last two years, in order to maintain our standing as the longest running annual IOTA get-together. Since I have a limited Zoom account, I will primarily invite previous Visalia DX Convention attendees, IOTA Ltd management and QSL checkpoints, and major IOTA activators. Zoom limits the free account to 40 minute sessions, so it will be a short presentation. We will recognize silent keys, quickly review the IOTA expeditions of this year, and go into a short presentation. A separate e-mail will be sent next week with the Zoom invitation. Hope to see you in Visalia, California! 73, Will, WC6DX IOTA Dinner Coordinator Visalia International DX Convention INDEXA NEWS (Fall Newsletter). The Fall 2022 Issue of the INDEXA News- letter (Issue 137) is now available. ESPOO, FINLAND, OCTOBER, 21ST, 2022 VERY SAD OCTOBER NEWS FROM THE NORTHERN VILLAGE Peter Tigerstedt, OH5NQ & OH2BM SK Peter is gone. Amateur Radio in Finland has lost one of its giants. Peter was a real ham in many ways; he was one of the three pillars, OH5SM, OH5NW and OH5NQ, of the Mustila trio who left their mark on not just local but also international amateur radio. All three are gone now. Peter took the international route. As a visiting professor in many parts all around the globe, he always became integrated with the local amateur radio community. A great example being W9YT, the University of Wisconsin. Peter was one of the pioneers at both ends of the HF radio spectrum; 160M and 6M, and his contributions to both were significant. The multi- multi contesting scene in Finland was very much born around the Mustila Mansion and their battles with a more recently born team at OH2AM. These battles could be described as fierce but friendly. So much so that the rivals finally teamed up for yet another world win. Peter was a mentor for a large portion of the younger OH contest gener- ation and maintained an impressive multi-station OH5Z at the Mustila Estate as its host and sponsor. Now the OH5Z group has lost their "father figure" and are looking longingly towards the horizon. When not involved in the many facets of Amateur Radio, Prof. Dr. Peter Tigerstedt was a world renowned scientist, plant breeding expert and professor emeritus at the Helsinki University. He was perhaps most famous as being the founder of the rhododendron breeding program at Mustila Arboretum. He remained the chairman of the Mustila Arboretum Foundation all the way till his passing. If you wish to remember Peter and honor his legacy, perhaps you can plant a rhododendron P.M.A. Tigerstedt, named after him. They grow to reach impressive heights, much like everything else Peter did during his lifetime. Our condolences to Peter's wife Irma and the whole family. The team OH2AM and OH fraternity -------------------------------------------------------- TF, ICELAND. Ben, TF3T, will be active from Reykjavik, Iceland, during the CQWW DX SSB Contest (October 29-30th) as a Single-Op/All-Band/High- Power entry. QSL via TF3MH or LoTW. TK, CORSICA. He will also participate (part-time) in the CQWW DX SSB Contest (October 29-30th) as a Singlle-Op entry. QSL via his home callsign. TL8AA & TL8ZZ CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC DXPEDITION NEWS (IDT Press Release, dated October 22nd). Silvano, I2YSB, from the Italian DX Team, posted the following [edited]: Just 20 days before departure of our Dxpedition to the Central African Republic. Air tickets and visa are in our hands, and the Team will undergo the final Covid-19 molecular test on November 10th. Unfortunately, not so good news from Bangui. The Capital city is under- going a severe shortage of fuel, available only at black market tripled prices. A liter costs about 1600 XAF, in excess of 2.4 USDs. Our location is equipped with an oil-hungry 30kW generator. Electric power in Bangui, as well as internet, are available only a few hours a day, day or night with no foreseeable schedule. Obviously, we shall try our best to be available on air, but oil shortage makes any plan most uncertain. 73 Silvano I2YSB IDT Team TO5/FS, ST. MARTIN (Update). Members of the Pic Paradis Contest Team will be active from St. Martin Island (NA-105) between October 24-31st. The operators mentioned are Marco/FS4WBS, Gino/I8ULL, Pat/I8QLS, Nino/ IK8ENH, Gianluca/IC8WIC, Marco/KC9FFV, Marco/N7QLS and Piero/W1NA. Their activity will include the CQWW DX SSB Contest (October 29-30th) signing TO5M as a Mult-? entry (this is in memory of Morton, W1UQ [FS5UQ/PJ7UQ]). QSL via LoTW. The operators will probably use the callsign FS/homecall outside of the contest. TZ, MALI (Update). Jeff, TZ4AM (K1MMB), in Bamako, Mali, continues to be very active on 40-6 meters using CW and SSB (especially on 10 and 6 meters using CW/SSB). QSL via KX4R or LoTW. Jeff has posted the following updates this past week on QRZ.com: * October 14th: LOOKING FOR DXCC ON SIX METERS: My 10 element 6m beam is built and and mounted on the tower. I will be looking for new entities on CW and SSB (FT-8 is not working). So far, I have worked 69 entities: the complete list of entities worked toward DXCC is posted at the bottom of this page. If you are not on the list and you think there is a possibility of working Mali from your location, please contact me by email or on ON4KST chat and we can give it a try on CW or SSB. * October 18th: I stacked my 3 element homebrew 30m yagi below the 6m 10 element yagi and both work like gang-busters. On 30m spontaneous reports of very strong signals. On 6m CW, a few CQs to SA and Carib- bean yielded QSOs with CE2SV (Dale) and 9Y4D and FG8OJ and PJ4MM with very readable signals both ways. So the few people willing to get on CW (can work Mali on 6m). Oh, by the way, I heard some strange noise on the frequency and managed to work 9Y4D and PJ4MM again, but on SSB! So, if you think the 6-meter band is open, please let me know and we can try for a contact. 30 Meters: Look for the spots and call up 1.1 or higher. V2, ANTIGUA AND BARBUDA. Operators Andy/KC2GOW, Anthony/N2TK, Fred/AA3R, Dale/N3BNA, Brian/N3OC (V26OC) and Sam/WT3Q will be active as V26B from Antigua (NA-100) during the CQWW DX SSB Contest (October 29-30th) as Multi-Single entry. He will be on the island between October 23rd and November 1st. QSL via LoTW. V8, BRUNEI. Suggested frequencies FT8 (F/H mode): 3567, 7056, 10131, 14090, 18095, 21091, 24911, 28091 and for 6m terrestrial - 50323 kHz. The CW and SSB frequencies will be flexible. Equipment will be KX3, Flex 6600, with verticals for 80-10 and Ultrabeam Vertical for 40-10m. They will also use the callsign VK9C during the CQWW DX SSB Contest (Oc- tober 29-30th). Final preparations are now underway in Melbourne and Perth for the team's departure from Perth on 25th October. The NA - Cocos Keeling path is notoriously difficult. We are therefore committed to investing extra time and effort to secure as many QSOs as possible from this part of the world. "Celebrating 31+ years (March 1991) of FREE DX News" *** SPECIAL NOTE FROM EDITOR TEDD KB8NW: I am sad to report that this will be my last OPDX Bulletin. After just under 32 years of writing the OPDX Bulletin (OPDXB), I have decided to retire. Actually I have been pro- viding DX information for the last 42 years starting on a local RTTY BBS, Packet Radio BBS and an online dial-up BBS called BARF80 (which received gobal phone calls before adding the InterNet to it). The last 42 years has been fun, but it is time to retire due to my age (I turned 70 this year) and my health (less pressure writing a bulletin each week and my eyes are not what they used to be). Beside the field of providing DX information over the last couple of years has become crowded, and "some" providers have turned it into a competition instead of helping and promoting DXing. I am happy to say that the OPDX Bulletin has been totally FREE for all those years with NO ADs, NO GAMES, NO HYPE, NO BOASTING and NO REQUESTS for donations (but there have been a few [very few] unsolicited donations. Thanks to those donators. I would like to thank the many individuals who have provided DX infor- mation for the OPDXB over the past 31+ years, but it would be just too many to list. However, there are some individuals I have to mention. Thanks to Father Steve Walick/SK, Dave Foran/WB8APD/SK, Rick DeMattia/ KD8WCK and Steve Gregory/W8SKG. They kept the servers that the OPDXB goes out on the InterNet running. Also, thanks to John Papay/K8YSE for hosting the OPDXB all these years on his Web page. Then there is my wife, Linda, OPDXB's Chief Proof-Reader (retired Special-LD teacher and non-ham], who has put up with me all these years and for checking my work. I hope in some way I was able to help you readers get your DXCC or possibly work an All-Time-New-One (ATNO); be it a new entity or a new band fill. Good Luck and Good DX.... 73 de Tedd KB8NW P.S. The OPDX Mailing List will still be active to provide upcoming DXpedition announcements and special press releases. They will not be in bulletin format. *** EDITOR'S SPECIAL NOTES (by Tedd, KB8NW): This week's bulletin was sent out earlier than normal to accommodate the late CQWW DX SSB Contest announcements. Also, we wanted to provide the readers with a consolidated listing of the CQWW DX SSB Contest participants.
