QSL via HC2FG. INDEXA NEWS (Press Release, dated April 29th). INDEXA is supporting the Dave Kalter Memorial Youth DX Adventure -- INDEXA is proud to announce its support of the 2022 Dave Kalter Memorial Youth DX Adventure (YDXA)! The INDEXA Board of Directors is honored to be sponsoring this project which encourages youth to experience DXing from the other side of the pileups. This year their DX operation will be conducted at the PJ2T super station in Curacao. President Bob Schenck, N2OO, says, "INDEXA has gotten behind this worthwhile project because we realize it can only create a better under- standing of DXpeditioning for the youth in our hobby. We see this as a great opportunity for them to gain first-hand experience from the DXing point of view and perhaps spur interest with our future generation of DXpeditioners." The YDXA was founded in 2009 by Dave Kalter, KB8OCP (SK); Don DuBon, N6JRL, and Jim Storms, AB8YK, with the purpose of introducing young amateur radio operators, between the age of 11 to 17, to the excitement of operating as a team at DX locations. Over the years, YDXA has taken young DX teams to Costa Rica, Saba Island and Curacao. The name of the activity was changed to the "Dave Kalter Memorial Youth DX Adventure" when Dave, KB8OCP, became a Silent Key in 2013. Young hams who participate with the YDXA team are required to be accom- panied by a parent or guardian. Through extensive fund raising efforts, with raffles and donations as well as sponsorship such as INDEXA, YDXA covers all expenses for the participating youth as well as their accom- panying adults. These expenses include travel, lodging, and meals with the exception of travel to and from the embarkation point. The pandemic curtailed the trip in 2020 and 2021. This year however, the team returns to contest super station at PJ2T and will be QRV from 14-19th July 2022. The team will operate all bands and modes with the callsign PJ2Y. INDEXA encourages everybody to consider supporting this worthwhile youth DX activity and look for them when they are on the air! Please visit www.qsl.net/n6jrl for more information. ### See ya' in the Pileups! [edited] We are pleased to announce details for the next TO9W activity from the beautiful island of Saint Martin. Activity will take place November 30th to December 9th, 2022. The 2022 team will include K9NU, N9EP, FS4WBS, W9AP and K9EL. Our goal is to make as many QSOs as possible on all bands and modes, with special emphasis on CW. We normally give priority to the 160, 80, 40 bands in that order, but with the increased sunspot activity, we will establish band priorities based on conditions at that time. The first two to three days are dedicated to the installation of antennas. We will operate during breaks and in the evenings the first few days. Antenna installation has priority. We will likely do more FT8 the first few days. We plan real-time uploads using the ClubLog Live Stream software for Expeditions assuming a steady Internet connection. John, W9ILY, is our QSL Manager and will upload our logs to LoTW daily. We will be well supported by the excellent pilot team of K9NB, W9MK, AA9A and W9ILY. All requests for information, schedules, QSO verification and general comments should be addressed to (TO9W2022 at gmail.com). We will once again offer certificates for the most band-modes worked in various categories. Updates and photos will be published on our TO9W Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/groups/539588070673287 For more details about TO9W, please go to our website: http://www.k9el.com/TO9W/TO9W.htm TX5N AUSTRAL ISLANDS DXPEDITION NEWS (Update). Well-known DXpeditioner Alex, UT5UY, went on the air on May 4th as EA4/UT5UY using a remote station in Madrid, Spain. Amateur Radio will also be used during the upcoming Mother's day when Alex will greet his wife, Sasha and his 12 year old son Daniel, currently living in Finland. This is in line with IARU's theme: "Never Alone", and showcasing the fact that Amateur Radio has an important role even during the world's most turbulent times. You can join Alex and his family on the air, on Saturday, May 7th, on 14260 kHz at 1100 UTC and again at 1500 UTC and give Alex your moral support that he and his family needs during these dire times. Alex is ever grateful to Fred, WW4LL, from (www.beloud.us) as well as to Jerry, WB9Z, for providing Alex this remote station opportunity and for bringing him back to the amateur radio brotherhood, at a time when moral and material support is needed the most. Warmest Regards, Adrian, LA/KO8SCA; Martti, OH2BH; Pasi, OH2MZB; Pekka, OH2TA and Timo, OH5LLR. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TO BE ADDED TO THE OPDX MAILING LIST -- Click or send requests to: Subscribe: (mailto:kb8nw at hotmail.com?subject=subscribe) Unsubscribe: (mailto:kb8nw at hotmail.com?subject=unsubscribe) ** PLEASE NOTE FOR OUTLOOK USERS: PLEASE put your E-mail address also in the body of the message. A happy team, a lot of of happy faces - and we all look forward going there and get you in the log! All testing went very well! We will post an update later about the testing. Let's make this together - let's go to Bouvet! 73 3Y0J Bouvet team Group dinner picture: https://www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=10158858663228576&set=gm.3879077568883415 ------------------------------------------------------------- * May 5th: Our system test weekend went well. We successfully tested our radio, amplifier, filter, antenna and tent setup. We run various tests that confirmed our setup and antenna and tent layout is ok with the given footprint available to us at Bouvet. In addition we met for a very valuable team building!! Test results: * 20m-10m in band tested ok with actual Bouvet setup. No station interference. * No 2nd harmonic issues 40/20 and 80/40m Based on the meeting and all the testing and installation we have created a punch list of roughly 70 items that still needs to be fixed, adjusted or improved before our departure. Some of the items: * need to replace damaged steel wire * need to improve manual rotator solution * replace some damaged guy wires exposed to high tension * purchase tools to improve speed of installation * complete software installation * diagnose failed cable * network issues to be resolved * improve the table layout and routing of cables * improve the FT8 table location and layout (4xSunSDR) * improve the sleeping tent layout (yes we will minimize the sleeping - don't worry...) ++ Below a photo of the team members who attended the Oslo meeting. Watch the following URL for details and updates at: http://cy0dxpedition.net/index.html Operator Murray Adams, WA4DAN, sent out the following Saturday evening: Here is the latest update on the 2022 Sable Island CY0S DXpedition..... "In the planning stage since 2017, It looks like the Sable Island DX- pedition will become a reality in the Fall of 2022. Due to Covid, the Parks Canada Sable Island manager being assigned to a special project and the operational workload of the Sable staff, the DXpedition had to delayed for several years. On Thursday, May 5, we once again received formal written permission to conduct a DXpedition on Sable in the Fall of 2022. The DXpedition team expects to have the exact dates within the next month or so. The team has applied for the call CY0S. The operators for the DXpedition are K4UEE, W0GJ, K5YY, N2IEN, WW2DX, K4ZLE, N2TU, W4DKS and WA4DAN. The team plans to be active on all bands 160-10. The team has worked hard and encountered many obstacles during the past six years. The biggest issue the team had to overcome was the strict, no overnight stay policy on Sable. The team leader flew to Halifax, Nova Scotia in October 2019 and met with the Parks Canada - Sable Island manager. During this meeting a special arrangement was negotiated to allow for a 8-9 day DXpedition. More details will be released in the coming weeks and months". www.cy0dxpedition.net 73, Murray Adams WA4DAN D4, CAPE VERDE. Robert, S53R/9N7AA, posted the following, May 14th, on QRZ.com: [edited] "QRM continues to be prohibitive for any normal CW/SSB on 20m inclusive and below, where even FT8 struggles with signals heavily plagued by the local interference/QRM. Higher bands are surprisingly good and 6m started showing some life. For the time being, only Asia and the Western part of the Pacific have been heard/worked. Most of the activity is on CW and occasionally some SSB, but I've started doing some RTTY again, which is great fun and requires operator skills and interaction, as opposed to utterly boring and unchallenging, yet I must admit very useful FT8/FT4 modes. The license has been renewed and extended until May 2023. Please note that 60m band is not permitted in Nepal. QSL via S57DX, direct only, and of course, LoTW and ClubLog will be updated at least once a week. Please use s57dx at yahoo.com for PayPal requests and will try to set up the OQRS soon. Activity will be on 80-6 meters, including 60m, using CW, SSB, FT8/FT4 and the QO-100 satel- lite. QSL via F5RAV, direct, eQSL or LoTW. The trio has also included a "Go Fund Me" page (https://gofund.me/6ad9d75d) for their operation which was started by Zorro, JH1AJT/SK, to help improvements, living con- ditions and the local village school. See the Web page to see more details. CY0S SABLE ISLAND DXPEDITION NEWS (Press Release, dated May 13th). [edited] "As announced previously, the 2022 Sable Island CY0S DXpedition has been formally approved for this October/November. As soon as the exact dates are determined by Parks Canada, we will release them to the DX community. Parks Canada is extremely busy with maintenance projects which have pri- ority. Environment Canada completely automated their Sable weather station in 2019 so they no longer have personnel on the island. As planning con- tinues, the CY0S team faces significant costs. This is by far the most expensive CY0 DXpedition ever. The budget for this DXpedition is 65,000 USDs. The team will charter the Sable Aviation fixed wing aircraft as well as the Vision Air Sikorsky SK-76 helicopter. The team will require two round trip flights with Sable Aviation and two round trip flights with Vision Air. These charters are at a very significant cost. Addition- ally, Parks Canada charges for the use of the Visitor Quarters next to the Sable Station. The team members have committed to paying a minimum of 50% of the cost of the DXpedition. Currently, our fund raising is just starting to ramp up. We encourage DX'ers worldwide who need Sable Island to support our efforts. It's been a long six years with trying to make this DXpedition a reality. The team has had to overcome many obstacles. Donations can be made directly from our website. Thanks in advance!" https://cy0dxpedition.net/index.html 73, Murray Adams WA4DAN 2022 Sable Island CY0S DXpedition Team Leader DAY-XENIA HAMVENTION NEWS.............................. * Ken Opskar, LA7GIA, Co-Leader of 3Y0J, posted the following update on the 3Y0J Bouvet Island FaceBook page [edited]: The Dayton Ham- Vention takes place on May 20-22nd. The Northern Ohio DX Association will once again sponsor a Hospitality Suite (24th year) at this year's Day-Xenia HamVention. It will be in Suite 1011 on the 10th floor of the Radisson Hotel Dayton Convention Center (formally known as the Crowne Plaza Hotel) on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings (Look for signs!). All DXers/Contesters are welcome. Munchies and refreshments will be available. Come and meet the members and friends of NODXA. EUDXF NEWS. The European DX Foundation (EUDXF) reports on May 11th: 4U1ITU back on the air (By PB2T).... You may have worked 4U1ITU recently or you may have seen some 4U1ITU cluster spots. The operation is real and the station will be on the air until 3 June. After a two year lock down, the ITU building in Geneva is back in business. Currently a series of meetings of Study Group 4 (satellites) and 5 (terrestrial and amateur) Working Parties takes place. The two year lockdown has not been good for equipment and antennas. Lots of technical issues had/have to be solved. As it looks now (but we have to wait and see) 4U1ITU can operate on WARC bands with dipole fixed NW/SE and use the STEPP-IR on 40/20/15/10. A second radio is now being set up for 6 meters including FT8. This activity will most likely be the last one before the reconstruction of the ITU building starting by the end of the year. The shack will be closed soon for several years. It is recommended to fill empty bandslots now. ----------------------------------------------------------- FM, MARTINIQUE. Gerd, DL7VOG, is once again active as FM/DL7VOG from Les Trois-?lets, Martinique (NA-107) until May 24th. Activity will be holiday style on various HF bands using CW, RTTY and FT8 with some SSB "upon request". QSNs show he has been on 40/20/10 meters using FT8. QSL via ClubLog's OQRS (preferred) or by his home callsign (direct or by the Bureau). FT4/X, KERGUELEN ISLAND (Update). The Les Nouvelles DX reports that Arthur, FT4XW, has found a location for his equipment and he still has to find a place to install his inverted V. As reported in December, Arthur is totally new to ham radio, and is currently working on the Kerguelen Islands at Port-aux-Francais on a scientific mission as an electronic engineer. He has been there since October, and will be there until Decem- ber 2022. He states that he has a XIEGU G90 and a DX Commander SOTA/POTA vertical antenna. QSL via F6EXV, either direct (standard procedures) or by the Bureau. LoTW will be uploaded 6 months after the end of operation. As of May 12th, there has been only one QSNs reported since the beginning of the year. HH18, HAITI (Correction/Special Event). Members of the Radio Club D'Haiti will be activating the special callsign HH18MAI from Port-au-Prince between May 18-23rd. Activity is to commemorate Haiti's "Flag Day" (May 18th) and Catherine Flon, who was a Haitian seamstress, patriot and national hero- ine that sewed Haitian's first flag of the independence as a republic (1803). QSL via N2OO only (not W3HNK) or ClubLog. INDEXA NEWS (Press Release, dated May 8th). Dog Island (USI FL005S, WW Loc.EL79), Florida, is an extremely rare IOTA because access is controlled by the 25 or so homeowners on the island. There are no hams on the island, and the only activations have been done by Bruce over the last 9 years. Access is by permission only and permission by one of the homeowners. It is only accessible by private charter or single engine fixed wing aircraft and by charter boat. The airstrip is overgrown so private charter is the only real choice. There are no streets, roads, stop signs, trendy cafes, or beach-front bars. If you need it, you bring it. This year's activity will only be on 40-6 meters primarily on CW, SSB, FM, using 100 watts an ICOM 7100 into an off center fed dipole. It was seventy-seven (77) days ago when Ukrainian amateur radio operators went off the air and have begun being worried about their families? safety and future. A month in the bomb shelter has affected Alex, UT5UY family and son tremendously and it became clear that only one option remained for Alex: to send his family overseas to safety while Alex remained in Ukraine defending his homeland. This is the time when the ham community got together to help rescue his family and provide them with a reasonable life outside Ukraine. With the war continuing and with no end in sight, Alex, with a special permit, came to Finland to join his family. You can easily notice his family?s happy faces at the Helsinki airport upon Alex?s arrival. After a 50 days hiatus, they came here to assess whether they could start a new life in the North Republic of Finland. A NEW LIFE IS BEGINNING Alex arrived in Finland with only one suitcase and his laptop computer, the same as his wife Sasha forty-five (45) days earlier. Their son Daniel, 12yo is now in the school in Finland and his wife Sasha is busy taking two language courses simultaneously. With the high education from Ukraine their potential for a new beginning looks very good. Alex already received his new Finnish radio license at the airport and you will soon be able to hear OH5UY QRV. It was amateur radio that has helped Alex?s life improve for the better. Thank you to the group behind the scenes: Ralph, K0IR, John, NG0Z, Robert, W0ZT, Glenn, W0GJ, Fred, K3ZO, Wayne, N7NG, Dave, N7NR, Bernie, W3UR, Jerry, WB9Z, Bill, NY9H, Bill, N9US, Hilkka, OH1DV, Pekka, OH1TV, Antti, OH7EA, the Metro DX Club and Northern Illinois DX Association and Marek, SP7VMM and Mira, SP7VUM who provided the land transportation in Poland. Many people have inquired about an opportunity to help Alex, UT5UY/OH5UY with his new beginning. Such opportunity is now available at: PayPal.Me/ut5uysupport If you have any questions or need additional details for your support please contact Adrian, KO8SCA (ciup at yahoo.com) or Martti, OH2BH at (oh2bh at sral.fi). Amateur Radio is a unique passion but is not a detached one. Wherever the world is heading, amateur radio always follows. When we see our own in need we should be able to stand up and get involved; both in good times and bad times. So let?s unite now and show our mighty power! The moment we hear Alex is back on the air and on the DXpeditioning trail we will know we have succeeded! Dave Pascoe, KM3T, and Craig Thompson, K9CT, Inducted into CQ Contest Hall of Fame; Seven New Members Added to CQ Amateur Radio Hall of Fame -- (Xenia, OH - May 21, 2022) - CQ magazine today announced the induction of two new members to the CQ Contest Hall of Fame, which honors those contesters who not only excel in personal performance but who also "give back" to the hobby in outstanding ways. CQ World Wide DX Contest Director and former CQ Contesting Editor John Dorr, K1AR, presented Hall of Fame plaques at an induction ceremony held at the annual Dayton contest dinner on May 21. The 2022 inductees to the CQ Contest Hall of Fame are: * David Pascoe, KM3T, a highly-accomplished multi-op and single-op contester with many championships and record scores to his credit, who is also responsible for much of the "back room" infrastructure behind the administration of many major contests. He is the infra- structure and IT security "departments" for all of the contests supported by the World Wide Radio Operators Foundation (WWROF), including all CQ contests, several ARRL contests and others. He also maintains the e-mail lists on the contesting.com system, including CQ-Contest, 3830 and more. He is also a pioneer in live contest audio streaming, and is a volunteer pilot for two organizations that provide free medical-related air travel. * Craig Thompson, K9CT, a world-class contester and promoter of youth in contesting. He developed the North American Collegiate Championship (NACC) program, in which college amateur radio clubs compete against each other in the context of the larger competition of the North American QSO Party. Craig also worked closely with Tim Duffy, K3LR, to develop a version of the Contest University (CTU) program speci- fically designed to integrate with each year's W9DXCC Convention. He is also involved in several amateur radio organizations, serving as treasurer of CWops, a board member of the Northern California DX Foundation (NCDXF), past president of the Society of Midwest Contesters and is currently chairman of the ARRL Contest Advisory Committee. The CQ Contest Hall of Fame was established in 1986 to recognize those amateurs who have made major contributions to the art of radio contesting. This is the 39th annual induction. CQ DX Hall of Fame -- There will be no inductees to the CQ DX Hall of Fame for 2022, as the judging committee determined that none of the nominees met the high standard required for selection. CQ Amateur Radio Hall of Fame -- The CQ Amateur Radio Hall of Fame honors those individuals, whether licensed hams or not, who have made significant contributions to amateur radio; and those amateurs who have made signi- ficant contributions either to amateur radio, to their professional careers or to some other aspect of life on our planet. The 2022 inductees (listed alphabetically) are: * Franklin P. Antonio, N6NKF (SK), co-founder of Qualcomm, whose chips underlie much of our modern technology. Antonio was particularly involved in the company's satellite work and was a philanthropist as well, donating $30 million to the University of California at San Diego as seed money for a new engineering building. * Wolf Harranth, OE1WHC/OE3WHC (SK), journalist and broadcaster on Radio Austria International; founder of Austria's radio documentary archive (DokuFunk), now the world's largest archive on the history of radio, including the YASME/Colvin collection; literary translator and 2017 recipient of the IARU Region 1 Roy Stevens memorial award for his work on DokuFunk. * Les Kramer, WA3SGZ, inventor of lower-limb prosthetic devices used by some 3000 people worldwide, including two survivors of the Boston Marathon bombing; as well as multiple other inventions in the fields of electric power generation, IED detection, optical coatings for industrial processes and more. * Roy Lewallan, W7EL, author of EZNEC antenna modeling software that has become the standard platform for designing and modifying amateur radio antennas. * Peter Marks, AB3XC, physician and head of the U.S. Food and Drug Administation's "Operation Warp Speed" program to combat COVID-19. Dr. Marks leads the team at FDA that reviewed and approved all of the available vaccines for COVID-19 as well as all intravenous ther- apeutics such as Convalescent Plasma, Monoclonal antibodies and dia- gnostic testing. * Bob Ringwald, K6YBV (SK), well-known blind jazz musician in Sacra- mento; co-founder of the Sacramento Jazz Festival; known locally as "the emperor of jazz" and, last but not least, father of actress and singer Molly Ringwald. * R. Scott Wright, K0MD, physician and leader of Mayo Clinic team developing the use of Convalescent Plasma as one of the first treat- ments for Covid-19; DXer, contester, former editor of the National Contest Journal. -30- -------------------------------------------------------------- REBEL DX GROUP NEWS.
