Activity has been on 20 meters SSB after 1100z. QSL via EA5GL or LoTW. 5V, TOGO (Update). Andy, 5V7JA (KB9IJI), who lives in Mango, Togo (WW Loc. JK00FI), since 2016 with a mission radio station and hospital, informs OPDX that he and his family do return to the States from time to time. He also mentions, "I have a FT-891 and omni-directional MP-1 Super Antenna. I'm mostly on digi-modes (FT8, JT65, WSPR, JS8CALL, Winlink) between 0000- 0200z and SSB some weekends. No promises, but I'm happy to try and schedule a QSO." QSL via eQSL or LoTW. Andy states, "I'm happy to still send you an old-fashioned paper card in the mail from Togo. Just let me know (kb9iji at gmail.com). Thanks for your patience waiting on the mail system." 8P, BARBADOS. Charles, 8P6ET, will be active as 8P1W during the ARRL Inter. DX SSB Contest (March 5-6th) as a Single-Op/All-Band/Low-Power entry. He will also be active later in the month during the CQWW WPX SSB Contest (March 26-27th) as a Single-Op/All-Band/Low-Power entry. QSL 8P1W via KU9C. 8P, BARBADOS. Richard "Dick", G3RWL, will once again be active as 8P6DR from Barbados (NA-021) between March 7-31st. Activity will be holiday style on 80-10 meters using CW only. He plans to be in the 85th 2022 BERU (British Commonwealth) Contest (March 12-13th). Dick suggests, "Just tell your readers NOT to respond to BERU contesters on 12/13 March (it makes us laugh at you)" [because it is a non-US contest]. QSL via his home callsign, direct or by the Bureau using ClubLog's OQRS. See QRZ.com for more QSL info. 8Q, MALDIVES. Laurent "Lolo", F8CZI, will be active as 8Q7ZI from the Maldives (AS-013) between March 9-21st. Activity will be holiday style in CW and SSB using a KX3 into a end-feed antenna. QSL via F8CZI. 9H, MALTA. Mike, G3VYI, will be active as 9H/G3VYI and 9H6YI from south- west Gozo between March 11-13th, during the RSGB Commonwealth CW Contest. He informs OPDX on March 1st, that he will be "Traveling with XYL from UK overland/ferry leaving this week, via Sicily and Malta, as IT9/G3VYI and 9H/G3VYI en route." Activity in Malta will be field day style from a high site using his camper-van on all bands using a 100w rig into ver- ticals and backup dipoles for 40/20/10m. QSL via G3VYI. 9N, NEPAL. Robert, 9N7AA (S53R), posted the following update on QRZ.com, MARCh 1st [edited]: I continue being on 30m long path to NA on 10131 kHz FT8/FH daily, from approximately 12:00 to 13:00Z, after which the band goes flat here, and I usually move to 17m for NA. Only well-equipped NA and SA stations get over the nasty local QRM that constantly ranges from S7-9 on 30m. Nevertheless, I see a lot of light and overlapping traces, mostly in the 1100-1800Hz range. Very difficult to decode at such low signal levels, so check your TX slot before you transmit and spread out - you have all the space up to at least 2800Hz. That sure raises your chances. On 17m the usable path to NA varies daily, with no forecast tool cor- rectly predicting whether long or short path is better. VOACAP typically shows both being equally usable, at least in the 13:00-15:00Z window, but it is either-or from what I see. Check both and see what is best on a particular day. Local QRM is at the "never seen before" level in the whole HF spectrum, but much worse on bands starting with 20m and lower. 17/15/12&10m are fairly "clean" compared to low portion of the spectrum and allow decent copy and runs, at least into EU and JA. I am still in the process of bringing in a "QRM buster" device, but it may not be available for the rest of this winter season. Ultra Beam / WIMO 2-element Yagi (40-6m) works great and with the 180-degree instant switching allows for quick path checks, or to work someone calling from the opposite direction. For the time being, activity will only be on 40-6m, while the 80/160 meter antenna remains a project for the summer months. This will also give me some extra time to try and find a solution for the interference. Note that 60m band is not permitted in Nepal. Because of the QRM, the operation on 30m and lower will only be on FT8 / FH for the time being - not that I like it, not at all, but.. On other bands, the vast majority of activity is, of course, CW. QSL via S57DX, direct only, and of course, LoTW and ClubLog will be updated at least once a week. For PayPal requests you can use s57dx at yahoo.com and OQRS will be set up soon. And - no Flags, QRZ.com log, eQSL, etc.. Please note that 9N7AA was previously operated by Andy, UA3AA. QSL info for Andy's operation from March-April 2014 is via Andy Gromov, PO Box 873, Brooklyn, NY 11230, USA. C5, THE GAMBIA (Reminder). Don, G3XTT, will once again be active as C56DF from The Gambia between March 9-18th. He is there for the 85th Commonwealth Contest (BERU) [March 12-13th]. Look for operation before and maybe after the contest. Activity will be on various bands, probably all CW like last time using low power (IC-7300 and wires) from a rooftop apartment. He will, of course, upload logs to LoTW and ClubLog, but possibly only after his return to the UK. QSL direct to Don's home callsign or via ClubLog's OQRS. CT9, MADEIRA. Operators Klaus/DJ9KM and Georg/DD8ZX, will be active as CT9/DJ9KM and CT9/DD8ZX from Madeira Island (AF-014) between March 5-12th. Activity will be holiday style on 40-10 meters using mainly FT8 and RTTY. QSL via their home callsigns, direct, by the Bureau or LoTW. D4, CAPE VERDE. Massimo "Max", IZ4DPV, is now active as D4K from Sao Vicente Island (AF-086). The length of his stay is unknown. Look for him to be in the ARRL Inter. DX SSB Contest (March 5-6th). Outside of the contest, Max plans to be on 6 meters. QSL via his home callsign. DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME (DST). Next weekend it will be time to change your clocks again. Countries in the Northern Hemisphere (most of N. American and some of the Caribbean) who observe Daylight Saving Time should change their clocks on Sunday, March 13th at 2:00 AM, and should move their "local clocks" forward 1 hour to 3:00:00 AM local time. Daylight Saving Time will end on Sunday, November 6th at 2:00 AM. European countries will switch to DST on March 27th. For the history and details about DST, as well as an interesting map of the world (showing the countries who observe DST), see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daylight_saving_time http://www.timeanddate.com/time/dst/2022.html ADDED NOTES: Hopefully, all amateur radio operators know not to change their GMT/UTC/ZULU clocks. However, since most operators usually set their computers to local time, some may have to change their settings on "some" ham radio software (ex. logging, propagation, DXTelnet, etc..) programs. Lance, W7GJ, sent out the following announcement February 28th [edited]: GOOD news: I have purchased all the airline tickets and excess baggage fees and have made a deposit on a rental house in Mayotte (FH) in LH27nb for September 6-18th this year. After exhaustive research, this appears to be the best - and possibly the ONLY - suitable site on Mayotte for 6m EME! I have already obtained written approval to operate as FH/W7GJ, but also have applied for a non-compound callsign (TO7GJ). There is no published record of anybody ever working FH from USA on 6m, so I am sure if you are in NA, you still need it! If you were thinking about trying 6m DX via EME, *THIS IS YOUR OFFICIAL 6 MONTH WARNING!* You have plenty of time to get that larger yagi or array up, and get that new 6m amplifier going! Please spread the news widely throughout the 6m community! I will have access to WiFi, but I will be using it primarily to update my computer clock and my list of daily stations worked to the Magic Band EME email group. I expect to be using the most current version of Q65-60A mode for all my EME operation and strongly suggest you get some experience with it before September! I plan on operating on my usual EME sked frequency of 50.190 MHz. If there is any ionospheric propagation, I will be on FT8 on 50.313 or 50.323. I know many EU stations have already worked FH, but some EU stations and ALL NA stations still need it for an ATNO. This rural QTH allows me to have my 6M8GJ up at 67' above the sea. There is an excellent takeoff during ALL of my moonsets out over the sea (which is only 5 wavelengths in front of the antenna). I expect to have some good ground gain lobes, including being able to work stations down below zero degrees elevation. For NA stations, there are days when NA moonrise is my moonset, so there could be amazing combination of ground gain on both ends that makes contact with modest sized 6m stations possible! Of course, there also are days when my moonset coincides with moonsets in eastern EU and the Middle East, again presenting excellent opportunities for contacts with more modest 6m sta- tions. The FH property borders a sports field to the north, and the nearest neighbor that direction is 200m away, so I am very optimistic about it being a quiet QTH ;-) Although my moonrise is blocked by mountains, I expect to be QRV primarily after the moon azimuth reaches 45 degrees, which will still provide common moon windows with all OC and AS stations. Most of my EME operation will take place during my local night, so I will not be plagued with the dreaded daytime equatorial high TEC clouds to inter- fere with the EME signals. Also, most of the windows with NA and EU are after workday hours, so hopefully many people can be QRV. Of course, with the rapid onset of Cycle 25, there may be periods of geomagnetic distur- bances but hopefully we will have enough common moon windows with everyone to work through such periods. The planned station is my new custom built DX Shop DXpedition amplifier, which is capable of 1500w output in Q65-60A mode, driven by my new ELAD FDM-DUO SDR. I also will use my ARR preamplifier ahead of my Airspy R2 receiver or the FDM-DUO transceiver. Feedline will again be a short length of low loss LMR600UF coaxial cable to my 6M8GJ yagi. I know I gave people plenty of advance warning before my FO 6m EME DX- pedition to call me when my moon was below 65 degrees elevation, and many people disregarded those instructions and waited until my moon was too high. In FO my experience was dismal trying to work stations when my moon was so much higher than I could aim!!!PLEASE PLEASE call me when my moon is below 65 degrees elevation!!! I probably will NOT be QRV when my moon is above 65 degrees! I hope to have a planned operating schedule posted on my web site very soon - it will show you when I will be QRV and when my moon will be too high. Contributions toward the substantial costs of this DXpedition are grate- fully appreciated! My mailing address is shown below and my PayPal address is simply this email. Additional details and updates will be available on my webpage (http://www.bigskyspaces.com/w7gj) very soon. Can't wait to put YOU in the 6m log from FH! MNI TNX and GL! VY 73, Lance FO/A, AUSTRAL ISLANDS (Reminder/Update to OPDX.1543/1544/1545/1550/1553). By the time you read this, Jacek, SP5EAQ, is expected to be active as FO/SP5EAQ and TX5AQ from Rimatara Island (OC-050, WW Loc. BG37oi) between March 2-30th. This will be a SSB only operation on 80-10 meters as well as the CQWW WPX SSB Contest (March 26-27th) signing with the special call- sign TX5AQ as a Single-Op/High-Power entry. QSL via SP7DQR, direct, by the Bureau, LoTW or the SP7DQR OQRS (http://sp7dqr.pl/en/oqrs.php/). For more details and possible updates, see: http://australs.sp7dqr.pl/index.html FK, NEW CALEDONIA. Phil, 3D2TS, will once again be active as FK1TS from Noumea, New Caledonia, sometime during April. Activity will be mainly on the Digital modes (FT8). He states that contacts are updated to eQSL, ClubLog and LoTW within the hour after QSO usually. QSL via M0OXO's OQRS. GB20, WALES (Special Event). Did you remember to change your clocks? FK, NEW CALEDONIA. Erwann, LB1QI, (a co-leader of the upcoming 3Y0J Bouvet Island Dxpedition) is now active as FK/LB1QI from Noumea, New Caledonia (OC-032). Excerpts state the following [edited]: Again we are planning to do more QSO from AS-140 this December 2022... Operators mentioned are Fazlay/S21RC, Manju S21AM, Aminul/S21D, Omi and possibly others.... For our last year's IOTA AS-140 activation - We had to reduce the number of stations from our initial planned two to a single HF (as we couldn't manage BPF, struggled to arrange other essentials like batteries, generators etc.). This time we started planning early and hope to manage all the BPF/Telescopic masts and other essential on time. In 2022, we are planning to activate AS-140 from a different Island [Island's name will be published once we get approval from authority]. Planning Three (3) stations, few more better antennas (Beam, VDA, Beverage), and our loved multiband vertical with 80m steroid - which was used for the 5000+ qso barefoot. We are planning to use a linear for SSB Phone if we can buy a larger 2000VA generator. We will also try to invite more inte- rested S2 operators if we find with adequate experience (inte- rested Bangladeshi HAM. Click here: https://s21dx.org/join-the-team QSL Policy: Similar to our 2 past IOTA, we will NOT monetize QSL to fund the DX-pedition. Paper QSL will be handled by our good friend David, EB7DX, who acts as our QSL Manager for last 15+ years. Please check EB7DX website for more detail about QSL service. All QSO log also will be uploaded in LoTW and ClubLog immediately if not during the activation. No need for contri- bution for LOTW/CLUBLOG confirmation (It's free) - but your support NOW can help us prepare better which will increase your chance of having a QSO with us. Antenna firm and rigs plan (Last update: 1 Mar 2022): 80m Beverage towards NA/JA 40m VDA 80-10m (30/15m) 7 Band GP Vertical 20m VDA 20/15/10m 7 element Beam Towards NA/JA 12m VDA 20/15/10m 3 element Beam Towards EU/AF 3cm Parabolic for SAT Two digital mode (FT8 Fox/Hound) stations One SSB Phone station with Linear*. * if we can manage a bigger generator. Budget and Support requirement: The initial estimated budget is set for 5,000 USDs, among these the operators and volunteers (so far they bare their own transportation and food cost) will provide around 2,000 USDs, rest of the 3,000 USDs needed for the boat charter, aluminum and glass fiber antenna mast, gene- rator and fuel and we are looking for contribution from HAMs around the world. EU-095. Operators Fred/F4JDH, Joachim/F4IDX, Maciek/F4VSQ and Dave/ F5SDD will be active as TM5F from Ratonneau Island (DIFM ME003, DFCF 13-06) between March 19-20th. Activity will be on various HF bands using CW and SSB. QSL via F5SDD or ClubLog. For more details about the island, see: http://tm5f.free.fr EU-121. Charlie, EI8JB, will once again be active as EJ8JB from Bere Island (WW Loc. IO51CP) which is located off the coast of West Cork between March 17-18th. He states, "Amateurs have authori- zation to use the 'EJ' prefix operating from any one of the offshore Coastal Islands of Ireland." Activity will be on various HF bands using CW, SSB and some Digital modes (PSK/ RTTY) as well as possibly FM Satellite. QSL via LoTW (Pre- ferred), by the Bureau and ClubLog's OQRS. EU-127. PRESS RELEASE, dated March 16th, 2022; by Zygmunt Szumski, SP5ELA, Chairman of SP DX Contest Committee: After careful deliberation, the SP DX Contest Committee, to- gether with the Polish Amateur Radio Union (PZK) and the SP DX Club, has decided to cancel the 2022 SP DX Contest. Since the start of the war in Ukraine, Poland has accepted nearly 2 million refugees to date, as a direct result of Russian aggression toward our neighbor. This is an unprecedented event in Europe and has resulted in the greatest migration crisis in Europe since World War II. Polish people are deeply engaged in all forms of humanitarian assistance. Polish radio hams are giving shelter to Ukrainian refugees in their homes and offering their help and services in every way possible. Under these extraordinary circumstances, we felt it was most appropriate to cancel the SP DX Contest this year. SP DX Contest rules and past results can be found at: https://spdxcontest.pzk.org.pl We look forward to your participation in the 2023 SP DX Contest on April 1-2nd, 2023. --- 2022 SP DX Contest Committee 3Y0J BOUVET ISLAND DXPEDITION NEWS (Update on the Team). Ken Opskar, LA7GIA, DXpedition's Co-Leader, posted the following on the 3Y0J FaceBook page (https://www.facebook.com/groups/3093983840726129), March 15th [edited]: The 3Y0J team is looking for one more operator. Specifically we're looking for a NA SSB operator. If you always have wanted to go on a most wanted DXpedition like Bouvet then send us an email. We would love to have you on the team, and can guarantee an exiting challenge! It will be all hard work. You will have to sail for 10 days, get seasick, then carry 6.3 metric ton into a zodiac, do a wet zodiac landing, fight the elephant seals, climb a rock, haul all equipment up, install the camp in harsh and cold environment, operate A LOT we have 12 radios one for each, sleep in a cold place, no beer or steak being served but you eat MRE, toilet is w/o insulation - but great seaview, be prepared for an emergency evacuation and sail back for another 8 days. Team agreement says you can talk your own native language in the pileup and say hello to your friends in Romania, Germany, Colombia or whatever. There is no shower for 3 weeks. The fee for this luxury vacation is only 20,000 USDs. But you will have the biggest pileup ever. And if there is a shortfall of donations you have to pay more. Requirements: (1) can take 7 weeks vacation in Jan/Feb 2023 (2) SSB contester or DXPedition experience (3) from NA E-mail: info at 3y0j.no ------------------------------------------------------- 3Y0J BOUVET ISLAND DXPEDITION NEWS (DXE YouTube.com Broadcast). CQ NEWS (Press Release; dated March 17th). [edited] CQ to Limit Contest Participation by Stations in Russia, Belarus and Donbas Region Due to Russian Invasion of Ukraine -- Contact: Rich Moseson, W2VU, Editor -- STATEMENT OF CQ COMMUNICATIONS, INC., REGARDING CQ CONTESTS AND THE RUSSIAN INVASION OF UKRAINE (Northport, NY 17 March, 2022) - CQ Communi- cations, Inc., publishers of CQ Amateur Radio magazine and sponsor of the CQ World Wide DX and WPX Contests, announced today that in light of the invasion of Ukraine by Russia and Belarus, it will not accept com- petitive entries in any of its sponsored contests by amateur radio stations in Russia, Belarus or the separatist Donbas region of Ukraine (unofficial D1 prefix). Logs submitted by these stations will be accepted only as checklogs. In addition, contacts with these stations by other partic- ipants will have zero point value and will not count as multipliers. This is in line with a similar action taken by the Radio Society of Great Britain, following the lead of other international sports feder- ations around the world. "We regret the need to take this action," said CQ Publisher Richard Ross, K2MGA, "and recognize that the vast majority of our fellow amateurs who are affected by it are innocent bystanders who had no role in their government's decision to invade another sovereign country. However, in light of the great suffering being inflicted without cause on the people of Ukraine by Russia's leaders, we cannot in good conscience stand by and do nothing." The CQ policy will take effect with the 2021 CQ WPX SSB Contest on March 26 and 27. Future events will be considered on a case-by-case basis, depending on the situation at that time. http://cqnewsroom.blogspot.com/2022/03/cq-to-limit-contest-participation-by.html ------------------------------------------------ CQ3/CT9, MADEIRA (Canceled). XI0, MEXICO (Special Callsign/Prefix). Ramon, XE1KK, will be using the special callsign XI0X from Mexico City. The reason for the special Call- sign/Prefix per Ramon, "Is to experiment with an attractive callsign. This way I can call CQ on unusual times or modes and expect to have callers. I disagree on the idea that once we work on a specific band/mode exclude the possibility of another QSO, a no-dupe policy. As you are aware this is quite common on digital." Ramon is expected to use the callsign during the rest of the year. Activity will be mostly on the Digital modes. QSL via LoTW and ClubLog only. XV, VIETNAM. Thomas, DL7BO, is currently active as XV9K. Length of stay is not known. Activity has been mainly on FT8/FT4 and 20/10 meters at various times. QSL via DJ6TF. YB, INDONESIA. On Friday, April 1st, the Royal Dutch Army will organize "HAM Meets Military" with 8 special stations consisting of 2 military operators and 1 amateur. The teams will use the following callsigns PA01MIL, PA02MIL, PA03MIL, PA04MIL, PA05MIL, PA06MIL, PA07MIL and PA08MIL between 0700z and 1900z from 8 different locations in The Netherlands. Activity will be on 80/60/40/20m and above on SSB, as well as 6m FM. They will be using military gear only, manpacked or with MB290GD. The main goal is to introduce the young military oper- ators to the world of amateur radio. Off course there is a little challenge involved, because soldiers love to be pushed to the limit. Which callsign has the best antenna-setup and makes the most contacts inside and/or outside the country? A special QSL card is available for all stations that made a contact with any of the 8 stations. Send your card direct (without anything extra) with return address to: 11 Luchtmobiele Brigade/Radio-Groep, PO Box 9208, 6800 HK Arnhem, The Netherlands. DO NOT QSL via the Bureau. PJ2, CURACAO. SILENT KEY. It is with great sorrow to report that well-known DXer Zorro, ZH1AJT, has become a Silent Key this past week after a battle with cancer. Zorro has been involved in many DXpeditions as well as financially sup- porting them. He will surely be missed by the DX community. OPDX and its reader would like to send out our deepest sympathy to the family and friends of ZH1AJT. * INDEXA PRESS RELEASE (Zorro, JH1AJT - Silent Key; March 23, 2022) [edited]. INDEXA, the DX community, and the world lost a great man. Zorro, JH1AJT, died on March 22, 2022, after a long battle with cancer. Until the end, he was optimistic; cheerful; and most importantly, concerned for his fellow human beings, especially disabled children. Through his schools and his humanitarian trips in Asia and Africa he brought a better life to all of those he touched. We of the DX community are deeply indebted to him. He contributed generously to DXpeditions and encouraged and mentored operators. Without Zorro's support our log books and our memories would be less than they are. Zorro's legacy and a deep bond will live on within INDEXA. He established and endowed INDEXA's Humanitarian Aid Fund. Through it, Zorro's helping hand will always be extended. We called each other "brother." But he was truly a brother to us all and all of us will miss him..... On March 17th, the European Conference of Postal and Telecommunications Administrations (CEPT) posted the following: Outcome of the written pro- cedure with the CEPT Assembly regarding suspension of the Russian Feder- ation and Belarus from CEPT Membership. Based on a request from a number of CEPT members, the CEPT Presidency carried out a written procedure, in accordance with the CEPT Arrangement, on the proposal to suspend indefinitely and with immediate effect the memberships of the Russian Federation and Belarus in the CEPT. Thirty-four responses were received to the CEPT Assembly letter in support of the proposal and one abstention. Based on the above, the CEPT Assembly has therefore decided: 1) to suspend indefinitely memberships of the Russian Federation and Belarus in the CEPT. 2) that the suspension of the said CEPT members will take effect as from 00:00 (CET), 18 March 2022. 3) that any future readmission to the CEPT would follow the usual rules established in the CEPT Arrangement, notably the need for a two- thirds majority of members of the CEPT to endorse such a decision. Moreover, the CEPT Presidency requested the Office to take all neces- sary measures in order to set in place the above-mentioned decisions.
