Once again the annual (the 14th) "13 Colonies Special Event" will take place between 1300z, July 1st and 0400z July 8th. New since 2015, the 13 Colonies have added another new French sister event station. The new bonus station is TM13COL from France (ops. Didier/F5OGL, Alain/F6FET, Alain/F5RMK and Didier/F5MNH). Also, the other foreign bonus station GB13COL will operate from Durham, England. The third bonus station is WM3PEN, and the 13 Colonies certificate will have a Liberty Bell added to it for a contact with this station. There should be at least two stations from each of the 13 colonies on the air, as well as Super contest stations, multi-operator Club stations and OM and XYL teams. The U.S. original 13 colonies are CT-DE-GA-MA-MD-NC-NH-NJ-NY-PA-RI-SC-VA. The special events stations mentioned are: K2A (NY), K2B (VA), K2C (RI), K2D (CT), K2E (DE), K2F (MD), K2G (GA), K2H (MA), K2I (NJ), K2J (NC), K2K (NH), K2L (SC), and K2M (PA). All HF bands will be in play including the WARC bands with the exception of 60 meters. 2 meters and 6 meter simplex are encouraged. All modes of operation should be represented - SSB, CW, RTTY, Digital, and the Satellites. The mode of operation is up to the individual colony state station. The theme this year is the "Land Battles of the Revolution". The cer- tificate is adorned with a great battle! The certificate is printed on heavy card stock. Stations working one state or as many as all 16, will be eligible for the certificate. A "Clean Sweep" indicator will be affixed for those lucky enough to work all 16. A special endorsement will be attached for stations contacting their sister operation, WM3PEN, in Phil- adelphia, PA, where independence was declared. All certificate requests go to KU2US and QSL card requests to each state's QSL Manager. For more details on the stations, suggested frequencies, QSL info and how to obtain the special certificate, see: http://www.13colonies.us Also, check out their FaceBook page: https://www.facebook.com/groups/13colonies All Short Wave Listeners (SWL), you can also qualify for the certificate. 3A, MONACO (Reminder/Update). Co-Leaders Ken/LA7GIA and Erwann/LB1QI, provide the following updates: * June 29th - We have now received a full pallet of freeze dried food from the Norwegian company Drytech. Drytech is located in Troms?, only 130 km from the North Pole's and this company has found the perfect way to freeze dry the ingredients and managed to develop their own gentle method that retains the unique taste and consistency of the ingredients. These hot meals using boiled water are very popular in Norway and for a good reason: they do the job! From the french Adventurers Vincent Colliard and Norwegian explorer B?rge Ousland - with their Icelegacy project - crossing 20 of the largest icecaps on earth to Johan Skullman an ex-Swedish armed forces, responsible for the very important part of combat performance in developing soldiers equipment, experts support Drytech meals. The company is also really engaged in reducing their footprint on the environment. Focusing on packing, the bag itself should ensure that it retains the taste and consistency of the meal for many years. Long shelf life reduces food waste! Check they website for more information: https://realoutdoorfood.com/ On FaceBook: https://www.facebook.com/drytech.no 73s! 3Y0J Team * Thanks to Greater Milwaukee DX Association for doubling their donation! Robert, S53R/9N7AA, posted the following, June 6th, on QRZ.com: "Focusing on 6 meters during June & July and the majority of activity will be over the weekends. During the week I may check the band occasion- ally in the 06:00 to 07:30Z window, and from around 11:00Z onwards. Europe is pretty tough, the band typically opens just once or twice a week in that direction and in a very selective manner - meaning only stations from a narrow/small geographical area come through, despite me being heard throughout EU. Always wondered how much the fact that I am posi- tioned on the South side and just under the massive 7000+ meter Himalayan wall, with EU being exactly in the same direction, has to do with this very peculiar propagation phenomena? QRM continues to be prohibitive for any normal CW/SSB on 20m and below, where even FT8 struggles with signals heavily plagued by the local inter- ference/QRM. Higher bands are surprisingly good with substantially less QRM. Please note that 60m band is not permitted in Nepal." QSL via S57DX, direct only, and of course, LoTW and ClubLog will be updated at least once a week. Please use s57dx at yahoo.com for PayPal requests. Last but not least, Robert states, "- NO Flags! Here is the latest update on the March 20-29th, 2023 Sable Island CY0S DXpedition: The Sable Island CY0S DXpedition Team was informed by Parks Canada - Sable Island on Wednesday, July 6th, that we would need to reschedule the DX- pedition from the Fall of 2022. The reason for this significant change is due to a large, six week project Parks Canada has on the island be- ginning on October 1st and going to at least mid-November 2022. This project was just approved and funding secured on July 4th. After discussions with the Sable Island staff and our DXpedition team, we unanimously agreed on March 20-29th, 2023, for the CY0S DXpedition. Finally, after seven years of planning, we have assigned dates for the DXpedition! The CY0S team would like to thank the staff of Parks Canada - Sable Island for diligently working with us to find a suitable alter- native date. By moving the DXpedition to March 2023, the CY0S DXpedition team hopes to take advantage of the late winter, early spring band con- ditions and improving solar numbers. Also this week, Sable Aviation in- formed us of another increase in the fuel surcharge for our flights to the island. The fuel surcharge has now "doubled". If you would like to help support the CY0S DXpedition, this can be done directly from our website: https://www.cy0s.com The CY0S team would like to thank everyone for their patience during this seven year process. It hasn't been easy and there have been many delays. Such is the challenge of trying to mount a DXpedition to Sable Island! 73, Murray WA4DAN ----------------------------------------------------------------- DX0, SPRATLY ISLANDS (Update). John, K9EL, announced the following: Several months ago, I announced that I was stepping down from managing CQ's DX Marathon after the 2022 DX Marathon is scored. Several interested parties contacted me and we had some frank discussions. Most felt that the Marathon was poised for some significant growth and that it was too much for one person to absorb. Mark, WC3W, has also forecasted some sig- nificant growth in the Marathon and has been working with me on a vision and mission statement along with some key positions descriptions that would allow for volunteer participation. Mark is willing to head up a team of volunteers who would manage the Marathon starting with the 2023 edition. By dividing up the work and responsibilities across the team, our growth plans and ideas can become a reality. I will remain involved and part of the team to assure a smooth transition. If you have any interest in participating and would like to join the new DX Marathon team, please contact Mark, WC3W at (wc3w at yahoo.com). We would like to get this kicked off as soon as possible so that we will be ready for the 2023 Marathon year. Thank you! de John/K9EL & Mark/WC3W E5, SOUTH COOK ISLANDS (Reminder). FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE July 10, 2022 St. Charles, MO YASME FOUNDATION GRANT The Board of Directors of The Yasme Foundation announces that it has made the following grants at its recent board meeting. Amateurs Radio Algeriens and Ethiopian Amateur Radio Society to attend YOTA Summer Camp Croatia 2022 Foundation for Amateur Radio (FAR) and the ARRL Foundation Scholar- ship Program YASME FOUNDATION EXCELLENCE AWARD -- The Yasme Excellence Award is pre- sented to individuals and groups who, through their own service, crea- tivity, effort and dedication, have made a significant contribution to amateur radio. The contribution may be in recognition of technical, operating or organizational achievement, as all three are necessary for amateur radio to grow and prosper. The Yasme Excellence Award is in the form of a cash grant and an individually-engraved crystal globe. The Board of Directors of The Yasme Foundation is pleased to announce the latest recipients of the Yasme Excellence Award: Parks On The Air (POTA) Team -- Since the program's inception, it has grown enormously and now has more than 6500 "activators" who operate from the parks and more than 20,000 "hunters" who work them. The core team consists of W3AAX, W?ZAP, W8TAM, N3VEM, PA0KGB, AB0O, WT8J, and K4CAN. Next to DXCC and IOTA, POTA has become one of the most active worldwide operating award programs. Even more important, though, is that more hams are OTA (on the air), especially hams with modest sta- tions or who cannot get OTA from home for whatever reason. POTA is making it possible for them to have a great deal of fun, be active on HF/VHF/satellites, and learn about radio. Jan Stadman, DJ5AN/PA1TT -- In recognition of his efforts organizing ham radio events. For many years, Jan organized the Dutch HF Convention and the annual European DX Foundation meeting in Bad Bentheim Germany. Jan also runs the EUDXF booth at Ham Radio in Friedrichshafen. Together with other DX associations he invented and shaped the "DX Plaza" that is now the central meeting point for DXers present in Friedrichshafen. In 2017 Jan joined the organizing committee of the Dutch German Radio Amateur Meeting DNAT and took over as committee chair in 2020, just before COVID. The pandemic didn't stop him and even with the restric- tion that were in place he was able to organize several events. * * * * * The Yasme Foundation is a not-for-profit corporation organized to support scientific and educational projects related to amateur radio, including DXing (long distance communication) and the introduction and promotion of amateur radio in developing countries. J2, DJIBOUTI. James, KI7MGY, is currently on a DXpedition to Djibouti until June 2023. He has been issued the callsign J28HJ. He states, "Prefer short ragchew to contesting and DX hunting....I like Voice and Data. No CW at this time, but it is a goal." Activity will be on 80/40/20/17/15/10 meters SSB. FT8 and some other modes as he learns them. Logs will be uploaded to LoTW. J2, DJIBOUTI. Members of the Riverine Amateur Radio Club will be active as J28RC from Camp Lemonnier. Last week we mentioned that Greg, N9GB, will be active from Grenada. Operation will be between August 12-19th, possibly signing with a J3 callsign or as J3/N9GB. He posted the following on July 11th (excerpts): "It is a vacation and I will be the only op so it will be pretty much "holiday style". QTH is a resort and not sure what floor I will be operating from. I won't be able to find out until a couple of days before I leave. Most of operation I think will be at 8+pm Grenada time with some daytime operation occasionally..... very little operation on the last day. I do want to get a J38xx call but that will be at the discretion of the NTRC. Bands expected are 40-10 (including WARC) and hoping some 6 mtr too but because I have zero QSO?s with 6 during my ham life, it will be an experiment. I hope to have a little practice before I leave. Modes will be mainly CW & SSB. FT-8 primarily after the XYL hits the sack. I will have an ICOM 7300 and a wire of some sort. No amp. The antenna testing is not complete so there may be some bands the 7300 tuner will not work with. If I can make the antenna work on 80 or 160, I will definitely try that each evening I operate. QSL via home call (QRZ.com), LoTW, and hopefully ClubLog but that has not been done yet. Band plan will likely be 30 kHz above bottom of band for CW and xxx90 for SSB (eg. 14190, 21290, etc). I will have to update you with FT-8 info. I will stay out of the way of the WAE contest during the weekend so that will be an exception to operation." JD1/O, OGASAWARA. Nobuaki, JA0JHQ, will once again be active as JD1BOW from Chichijima Island (AS-031) between September 3-5th. Activity is usually on 160-2 meters using CW, SSB and the Digital modes. Equipment is usually a TS-480HX (200w on HF, 100w on 6m) into a Micro-vertical, Single Delta loop and End Feed antennas. Look for more details to be forthcoming. QSL via his home callsign, direct, by the Bureau or LoTW. Visit his Blog page at: http://pandasan.jimdo.com JW, SVALBARD. SAC NEW (SCANDINAVIAN ACTIVITY CONTESTS 2022 CANCELLED). The SAC Contest Committee has unanimously decided to cancel this year's two sections of the Contest. Our decision has been made due to the ongoing war in the region and in consideration of the IARU declaration about friendship between people. We hope that the situation will change for the better, so that we can once again compete against each other as the SAC rules dictate. From the IARU web page (https://www.iaru.org/2022/statement-from-iaru/) "IARU is an apolitical organization focused on promoting and defending amateur radio and the amateur radio services. The amateur radio service is about self-instruction in communications and friendship between people." Decided on July 15, 2022 by: LB8DC Morten Kvernmoen OH2BH Martti Laine SM5AJV Ingemar Fogelberg OZ2I Henning Andresen https://www.sactest.net/blog/scandinavian-activity-contests-2022-cancelled/ TM, FRANCE (LH Op). Operators Chris/F5OHH and Dyd/F4ELJ will be active as TM2LW from the Kerjean Lighthouse (ILLW FR-0037, ARLHS FRA-326, DLF 22-003, DDFM 22, WW Locator IN88KU) during the International Light- house Lightship Weekend (ILLW - https://illw.net/) (August 20-21st). Activity will be on various HF and VHF bands using CW, SSB and the Digital modes. QSL via F4ELJ (but not necessary), all contacts entered in the log will receive a QSL by the Bureau. VK75, AUSTRALIA (Special Event). Look for special event callsign VK75FAA to be active until the end of October. Activity is to celebrate the 75th anniversary (July 3rd, 1947) of the formation of the Fleet Air Arm, the Royal Australian Navy's aviation branch. The callsign will be used by amateurs around Australia on a rotating basis. QSL via VK2YVA. YASME NEWS (Correction to Special Bulletin OPDX.1570.1). Ken, K4ZW, Vice- President, Secretary/Director of the YASME Foundation, informs that the latest YASME press release has a correction (POTA team names revised) in it, and the following section should read under "Parks On The Air (POTA) Team": "Since the program's inception, it has grown enormously and now has more than 6500 "activators" who operate from the parks and more than 20,000 "hunters" who work them. The core team consists of Jason Johnston, W3AAX; Rick Parent, W0ZAP; Colby Dillion, WR5B; Thom Martin, W8TAM, Julie Martin, WT8J; Vance Martin, N3VEM; Mike Case, W8MSC; Jeremy Turner, N0AW; Martin Moerman, PA0KGB; John Ford, AB0O; Steve Czaikowski, W3SPC. Next to DXCC and IOTA, POTA has become one of the most active worldwide operating award programs. Even more important, though, is that more hams are OTA (on the air), especially hams with modest stations or who cannot get OTA from home for whatever reason. POTA is making it possible for them to have a great deal of fun, be active on HF/VHF/satellites, and learn about radio." ZL7, CHATHAM ISLANDS. As of July 15th, Volker, ZL1VV (DL2RVS), became active as ZL7/ZL1VV from (per QRZ.com) Te One, Chatham Islands. Activity so far has been on 20 meters SSB between 0345-0500z. No other details are available. QRZ.com states, "All QSOs will be uploaded to LoTW after my return." ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TO BE ADDED TO THE OPDX MAILING LIST -- Click or send requests to: Subscribe: (mailto:kb8nw at hotmail.com?subject=subscribe) Unsubscribe: (mailto:kb8nw at hotmail.com?subject=unsubscribe) ** PLEASE NOTE FOR OUTLOOK USERS: PLEASE put your E-mail address also in the body of the message.
