The following was posted on the 3Y0J FaceBook page by Ken, LA7GIA, on February 2nd, with pictures [edited]: More DX Engineering equipment arrived in Oslo today. We're preparing for a good top-band setup. For 160m and 80m we bring with us 3 antennas for EACH band both spider-poles and DX Engineering aluminum verticals. This is different technologies and thus we can adapt to various site conditions. We can also risk losing 2 antennas on 160 and still we're ON. Same on 80m. We have a good amount of spare parts and you can trust us we will be WELL prepared. Dave WD5COV has started installing the 160m alu vertical in US where he will construct a fallen derrick system to get it up in the air. All 21m tall 160/80m verticals will be guyed in 4 directions and 4 levels and have 40 ground radials. We have a 1500W power limit which is an exception from the regulation. We also bring with us a RX antenna system to be installed 300m away from the camp so we can feed this signal to all 160-30m stations simultaneously! Hopefully the top-band CW pileup will be like the photo below (CQWW160). What is your plan on top-band? And what is your preparation to work Bouvet on 160? Let us know! https://scontent-ort2-2.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t39.30808-6/273162992_10158718550973576_6673536801152513617_n.jpg?_nc_cat=105&ccb=1-5&_nc_sid=5cd70e&_nc_ohc=lsITiZpdE7YAX-lOwTU&_nc_ht=scontent-ort2-2.xx&oh=00_AT-SP2-7B9xW-h3y8RUOBk4GSWEIOC5j69VAq0VZ958KEQ&oe=61FFC133 https://scontent-ort2-2.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t39.30808-6/272868198_10158718550723576_5886316465681845145_n.jpg?_nc_cat=105&ccb=1-5&_nc_sid=5cd70e&_nc_ohc=etkUR5ZaGvsAX_sDbDz&_nc_ht=scontent-ort2-2.xx&oh=00_AT8Z5F0XPYLK7UfbabPjVYnMJn0SzSfsOMW-rMUX_6YSHw&oe=61FFF4B8 ------------------------------------------------------------------ You can follow their plans from their Web site and the 3Y0J Facebook pages at: http://www.3y0j.no https://www.facebook.com/groups/3093983840726129 3Z200, POLAND (Special Event). The Madison DX Club's (MDXC) will have a ZOOM pre- sentation on Tuesday, February 8th. The program will be "The Rebirth of HF Communications", presented Paul Denisowski, KO4LZ, Product Management Engineer for Rohde & Schwarz. For February, they will have a program on the future of HF communi- cations. Morse Code is no longer required for radio operators in the Navy. Most Nation sponsored Shortwave Broadcasters (such as the VOA) have suspended their HF broadcasts. So will equipment manufacturers abandon the HF spectrum? Where will this leave amateur radio and DXing? Join us for their February program and find out what the future holds. The MDXC ZOOM host will be Kevin Shea, N9JKP, that will be online from 0000 UTC to socialize before the business meeting begins and to provide time to work through any technical issues. A brief business meeting will begin at 0030 UTC. The program begins at 0100 UTC, sharp. All interested hams are welcome. Gene, K5GS, sent out the following update on February 3rd [edited]: Over the weekend of January 28th, several TX5N team members met in Northern California to consolidate, test and pack the TX5N equipment for shipment to Raivavae, Austral Islands. After reviewing several transportation alternatives, we located a firm in Tahiti that will accept our shipment and transport it to the island via cargo ship. We have approximately 1,000 pounds (450kg) of equipment on the way to Tahiti. The equipment inventory includes Elecraft transceivers and amp- lifiers, a Flex PGXL amplifier, two SteppIR BigIR antennas w/80 meters, various mono band VDAs, an NA4RR hex beam and a 160m vertical. All team members have their airline and hotel reservations to Papeete, Tahiti, with onward passage to Raivavae. The operating location will be Pension Tama Raivavae, a small inn which has hosted many previous DX- peditions. Each team member will have a small bungalow, and radio operations will be conducted from a dedicated building on the beach. Most antennas will be beach mounted. Being on the north side of the island we expect good working conditions. There are several photographs of the Equipment Weekend activity at: https://tx5n.net/packing-weekend/ https://tx5n.net/ We are on schedule for this April, 2022 project. 73, Team TX5N ----------------------------------------------------------- V3, BELIZE. Abie, VU2ABE/AB1F, informs OPDX on the February 1st, "I've been silent (from India) for more than a few weeks due to the uncertainty of travel (four postponements so far), but I've stayed active on the radio. I hope to get back next week and operate as AB1F again." He also posted the following on FaceBook: Amateur Radio - The Antidote for Social Distancing! Operating as VU2ABE, bridged vast distances during a time of social distancing, making 1,052 contacts (QSO in radio parlance) between November 2021 and January 2022 from Shillong, India (NL55wn) on 15 meters in SSB mode using just 80 watts. The lone North American station was a KL7 (Alaska) and the single South American contact was a CX7 (Uruguay). (The line leading to Antarctica is a mapping error for 8J100CB a special event station from Chiba, Japan.) In the process, polished my conversational Nihongo (???) and Russkiy (???????), the two countries with the bulk of the contacts. DXpedition?to Bouvet Island, January 2023 -- Since we signed the contract with Marama we have been working on fine tuning the dates and port of departure. Today we can confirm that the departure date for the 3Y0J DXpedition will be January 6th, 2023. It is complex to plan the logistics of such a huge project like the 3Y0J Bouvet DXpedition which involves many parties. The new dates are mainly related to the Marama vessel log- istics, but as well the new dates enable us to return to Cape Town in late February 2023. We can confirm the scheduled duration of the DX- pedition is 44 days and that we have reserved a week additional con- tingency at the end giving us more flexibility. We have contracted 22 days at Bouvet Island, and it means we will spend more than 3 weeks at Bouvet. As we have the flexibility to still decide the port of departure Ushuaia or Port Stanley this will be done at a later stage. It is with great pleasure we inform that we have completed all equip- ment selection for this trip. For the station setup we will lineup 12 stations, that will include 8 human mode CW/SSB stations and 4 FT8 stations so to achieve our new goal of 200,000 QSOs. We will be using the Elecraft K3S, a well proven in the field DXpedition radio as the CW/SSB radio and SunSDR2 DX as the FT8 radio. During peak time we will run up to 12 radios simultaneously by using 4O3A triplexers and InnovAntenna/Wimo tribanders together with Messi& Paoloni coax. We plan for minimum downtime on the radios, and to achieve this we will setup the 4 FT8 stations to run 24/7 so that these can either be run by one operator separately or be run by any other oper- ator in a simplified SO2R setup. This will be done so that each operator can log into the FT8 machine from his operator position and run CW/SSB and FT8 simultaneously. Running several radios by a single operator this way has shown to be very efficient. At Bouvet we are pleased to announce that we will use the well-known S.P.E. EXPERT amplifier. We will bring with us various models where the 1.5K-FA will be the main model, but for 160m we will be using a 2.0 kW amplifier and a vertical running a K3S with diversity RX. We will also have several spare amplifiers. We are also pleased to inform that as the RX antenna system we will be using a ground independent RX loop system developed by LZ1AQ. This RX antenna will be located 300 meters away from the camp and will pro- vide us with a RX antenna for 160-30m with 8xRX output signals. It also includes possibility to switch from loop to dipole mode. We have procured 5 rugged YANMAR diesel generators to provide the station supply that will also include 1 spare generator. Going to Bouvet is a huge undertaking financially and it would simply not be possible without the support from the vendors and our sponsors Expert Electronics, S.P.E., 4O3A, Messi&Paoloni and LZ1AQ. If you want to have the opportunity to work the rare #2 DXCC Bouvet island, please consider supporting us by donating upfront. You can follow our plans from our website and the 3Y0J Facebook pages:? http://www.3y0j.no https://www.facebook.com/groups/3093983840726129? Thank you, Oslo, February 7th 2022 Ken Opskar, LA7GIA, Co-Leader Rune Oye, LA7THA, Co-Leader Erwann Merrien?, LB1QI, Co-Leader? ---------------------------------------------------------- * The following was posted on the 3Y0J FaceBook page on FaceBook page on February 8th, by Ken Opskar, LA7GIA [edited]: Soon on our website we will publish the station system diagram and also the antenna layout. The setup consist of up to 12 stations at peak time where 8 Elecraft K3S radios will be fixed to human modes SSB/CW and 4 SunSDR as FT8 sta- tions. The 4xFT8 radios can be run from one operator position, or the FT8 radios can be run from any other position individually. Hence, we can run SSB/CW simultaneously with FT8 from every operator position in simplified SO2R mode, or one operator can run several FT8 radios in parallel from his desk. There will be NO FT8 robots running unattended at Bouvet, all FT8 QSOs will be initiated by a human operator clicking on the deserving callers. We have a pronounced focus on human modes so to achieve the goal of 200,000 QSOs we will minimize the downtime of all radios and run the FT8 radios 24/7, this also to maximize the ATNO. We will use the S.P.E Expert amplifier and we plan bring in total 10 amplifiers and 14 radios with us. Spares and backup has a high priority in all parts in this pro- ject, e.g we will bring with us 3 x 160m antennas, 3x80m antennas and so on and have 4xtribanders 20-10m installed. We're confident in the selection of the well proven K3S as the CW/SSB radio is a good choice. As an RX antenna system we will use the LZ1AQ RX loop which has been tested and proves to be a good tool for us in case of in-band interfer- ence or noise. This ground independent omni-directional loop will be located roughly 250m away from the camp and each of the 8xK3S radio will have the possibility to share the signal and lsn to this loop simultaneously. If you want to have the opportunity to work this rare #2 DXCC please consider to support us upfront via PayPal (bouvet at 3y0j.no). Bill is in addition to being a Team Doctor also responsible for procuring and assembling our: * DX Engineering 40+30m vertical (phased verticals) * 40+30m inband and backup * Spiderbeam antennas (20m pole) * 20-17-15-12m backup verticals (12m pole) * 20-17-15-12-10m wire backup antennas On 40+30m we can also run either a single vertical element but we also have the possibility to add a phasing element - all currently being assembled and tested by Bill. We have spiderbeam poles for these as well 3 Rohn mast for backup antennas. As such we have 3 antennas on each of the 40+ 30m bands. We can risk loosing one vertical and we can replace with another one! We also have a 3rd backup! On April 28th, all team members will gather in Oslo, Norway, for a full scale system test. There we will spend 4 days together to assemble and practice on the assembly of radios, amplifiers, antennas and tents, perform a system test, prepare for packing the container and for sure have some fun when socializing! Robert, 9N7AA (S53R), posted the following update on QRZ.com, February 12th: Just returned from a short holiday in S5 and in the mean- time, the shipment with all the nitty-gritty radio stuff also arrived from Kabul. Managed to set up the station during the last couple of days, how- ever, lots remains to be done still. Rotor for the Ultra Beam / WIMO 2el Yagi (40-6m) was also installed and the system works great. Well, the QRM did not disappear in my absence and it is really bad due to the widespread use of cheap LEDs, open and messy power lines, and inverters. On all bands the S-meter rarely, if ever, drops below S6-7! It is slightly better towards the East. Apologies for not being able to hear you all. For the time being, activity will only be on 40-6m, while the 80/160- meter antenna remains a project for the summer months. This will also give me some extra time to try and find a solution for the interference. For those constantly asking - 60m band is not permitted in Nepal. QSL via S57DX, direct only, and of course, LoTW and ClubLog will be updated at least once a week. OQRS coming soon. Please note that 9N7AA was previously operated by Andy, UA3AA. Apply your special AAW's callsign, get a WAP reference and jump into the competition. Some operators have already signed-up to participate. See the following Web page at: http://www.waponline.it/antarctic-activity-week/aaw-2022 The WAP's intention is to draw WW attention to the Antarctic Continent, and the AAW is a unique event World-Wide (WW) where Hams (in any corner of the world, and not necessarily in Antarctica) wish to celebrate and improve World-Wide interest around the Icy Continent. Purpose of the A.A.W. is to increase world wide interest around Antarctic Continent and its related matters with the aim of staying close to the researchers and personnel who are spending their time away from home and families studying the Antarctic life and its secrets. An additional pur- pose is to share what Nations and Organizations are doing to protect this still non contaminated corner of the world, and to share a WW message of peace. Enjoyed about 500 QSOs today in nice pile-ups to see that all highbands (and the antenna) work quite well. Two hours ago - after the 30m pile-up has grown and started to bring some fun - suddenly the radio died with no warning. So now I have a broken radio. :-( Will try to get some help from a local Ham but right now I fear the DXpedition is over after a mere 500 QSOs and before the contest... Sorry guys!" However, on February 15th, Rob posted: "Thanks to the help of Pierpaolo, D44PM, I am back on air again after a sudden power failure killed my power supply." There were plenty of QSNs on the cluster later that day on 80/40/ 30/20/12/10 meters. Remember to look for him in the ARRL Inter. The following was posted by Thierry Mazel, F6CUK, on February 14th [edited]: After the permission granted by the TAAF and the DXpedition announcement, time has come to gather the equipment and move forward with the preparations. As you can see on the picture below, talks are extensive! Photo TAAF: http://crozet2022.r-e-f.org/images/image-2_4d1tmm2k.png Dates are now known. The Marion Dufresne will leave Reunion Island on December 8th, with a stopover at Tromelin to resupply the people there (an- other nice DX), then bound for Crozet. I should get there around Christmas. The ship will come back on March 26th, 2023, to pick us up, and after stop- overs at Kerguelen and Amsterdam, arrive at Reunion on April 16th, 2023. Therefore, I will be on Alfred Faure base for a solid 3 months. These dates may vary slightly depending on weather conditions. I am in close contact with the TAAF (Many thanks to the man in charge of Crozet, and to Mr. Chareyre for their attention) in order to prepare my arrival in the best possible conditions. Some of the main points under discussion are where the antennas (HF and QO-100) will be installed, as well as the shack. Obviously, I will not start operating the day after my arrival. I will need to install the antennas and the station. For that, other people's help will be required. The weather will have its role to play, as it would be impossible to climb to the roof, erect a mast under high winds: the base commander will have to give his approval. Starting the operation will not be the top priority of the first day. In theory, I will stay in the Albatros building. It is next to the Biomar building. It looks like they have arranged it so that I will not be of any nuisance to the other people (night operation for example). Looking at the picture below will give you a better idea. http://crozet2022.r-e-f.org/images/image-3.png ? Beno?t Stichelbaut - www.stichelbaut.com On the left is the Biomar building, on the right is the Albatros. Thank you to Mr. Stichelbaut for allowing us to use his picture. The callsign is not issued yet, and I have requested a special call to commemorate the 60 years of the first transmissions made by Mr. Baudelot, first ham operator on the island in the years 61/62. The callsign will be released only hours before the start of the activity by Paul F6EXV and Jean- Michel F6AJA, i.e. after my arrival on the island. Paul will inform via internet and Twitter, Jean-Michel on his DX bulletin. This will be so to avoid pirate activities. Anything not coming from Paul or Jean-Michel will be mere speculation. Be cautious of the FT4Wxxx that might show up ! As for the equipment, things are also progressing. Many sponsors have kindly responded to our solicitations. Contrary to our initial information, I will not be using K3s. Since Elecraft no longer produces K3S, it was difficult for them to loan or sell some to me. They mentioned a K4 but I do not want to go with only one transceiver, I need at least a second one in case of break down. Considering the procurement problems that all manu- facturers are facing, I did not want to take any risk. Consequently, I have decided to use a transceiver that I have at home, as well as used by F6KOP for their DXpeditions, namely the TS-590. It is fully equipped, and has a big advantage: no interface required to operate FT8, a mere USB cable be- tween the rig and the laptop is enough. Antenna plugs, a receiving antenna connector, an RS232 interface, USB, all filters and ATU. So no further options will be required. Furthermore, it has a great receiver, and can be easily found second-hand at very reasonable price. So, I purchased a TS-590 which is right now being modified by the Kenwood after sale service, to solve the known ALC issue. This modification is covered by the Kenwood warranty. I will soon purchase another 590 that will also be modified. On the amplifier side, after talks and advice from the Clipperton DX Club and the F6KOP team, I have chosen a 500W tube amp, the Acom 1010, less fra- gile than solid state amps. It can bear with a 3/1 SWR, which is a great advantage for a place where I will not be in full control of the environ- ment. So I will purchase a 1010 and have another one loaned by the CDXC via F6KOP. Let them be thanked for this. I also thank Acom company for the discount they are offering for the purchase, but this is not a gift. They are doing the best they can, still, the cost is not negligible in the overall budget. The antennas will be the subject of another press release, after we have made some tests at Paul's QTH in the spring. More to come later. I have asked the TAAF to get permission to send part of the equipment with the previous ship supply mission (leaving in November). It sometimes happens that, because of the weather during landing, not everything can be brought to the island. Imagine being on the island without a station! As I often say, Crozet is not Tahiti ! A lot remains to be done. Going to the TAAF islands for 4 months needs a lot of work, and is to be deserved. One of the next items on the agenda is winter clothing, and organizing skeds with school children's via QO-100. Thank you to all the team members as well as to our sponsors, nothing would be possible without them. As a conclusion, you can see preparations are going well, thanks to the continuous team work. Even if sponsors are helping a lot, expenses go on, and more help will be welcome. I suppose Crozet will be an ATNO for many, and you can't afford missing it, as nobody knows when the next ham oper- ation will take place from this #3 most needed. Thank you all! You will find our PayPal info on the Crozet2022 home page: http://crozet2022.r-e-f.org/home.html Thierry Mazel F6CUK -------------------------------------------------------------- IOTA NEWS. He states on QRZ.com [edited]: "It will not be a regular DX-pedition, but rather a bit of extreme portable operation, using Lab599 TX-500 Heavy Duty QRP-Trans- ceiver with 5-10 watts (99% CW) and a vertical antenna with three elevated resonant radials on a DX Wire Mini glass-fiber pole. Possibly, I will be able to use a 50W amplifier provided that I will find a suitable battery power source. Activity will be every 14 days on my day off from my work at the Oyu Tolgoi Copper & Gold Mine. After a month, it could be activity once per week. Most likely days of operations will be Sundays, but these second month on each Roster swing, Thursdays may be alternative days. I will be 10 weeks on site and 5 weeks home in Russia as it looks now. Normal Rosters are 4/2 weeks, but COVID changes that a bit to longer Rosters. My QSL Manager will be Pedro, EA5GL. LoTW will also be used." JW, SVALBARD (Update). The "DX Adventure Team" provides the following update to the DXpedition to Svalbard as JW0X and JW1000QO taking place between April 19-26th, 2022. The following is a press release [edited]: DX-Adventure is a joint venture of Max-ON5UR and Erik-ON4ANN, and consists of 15 very enthusiastic people with all experience in partici- pating or organizing a DX-pedition. The first DX-Adventure project is therefore immediately ambitious: The Arctic Archipelago - Svalbard - IOTA EU-026 from April 19-26th, 2022. The setup is to be active with 5 stations on all HF bands in different modes (CW, SSB, RTTY, FT8-FT4). In addition, we have the ambition to be the first to activate EU-026 on QO-100 (as JW1000QO). Three team members take on the challenge of driving a snowmobile all the way to Kapp Linn?, about 100km east of Longyearbyen. This is the only location that allows a "line of sight" on the QO-100 satellite. In addition, Kapp Linn? is also on the edge of the satellite footprint - speaking of a challenge... In such big projects you have an overall plan e.g how to conduct the DXpedition, what vessel, dates, equip- ment and how to do the fund-raising. At the same time you don't want to miss out on the small details and this has our highest attention. (A) These days we are going into the fine details. By 1st March we will produce detailed equipment list for all gear, i.e radios, antennas, tents, cables, filters, tables, chairs, food etc... The detailed equipment list will include packing details, dimension and weight so we can finalize the logistics. To make sure we have all needed gear on the list we will run through multiple QC sessions to pin down any missing items that will go into a punch list. All purchasing will soon be finalized. (B) The detailed equipment list will be used to prepare 3 loading plans. Loading of the container in Oslo summer 2022, loading of vessel Marama and loading equipment into the milpro zodiac. Be rest assured we will not put the equipment into an arbitrary sequence and hope for the best! The loading plan and how to build the camp has evolved over the course of 20 months since we started planning this DXpedition back in April 2020, and within the next 3 months it will be finalized. It means that each equipment will be packed and tagged indicating its sequence, content and what zodiac run it belongs to. This in a predetermined order, we will not shift equipment around because the tagging serve a purpose that will achieve our goals. We don't want to e.g land with the antennas, just to discover the coax or guy anchors or installation tools are in the sail- boat! (C) We're preparing for a tiered approach where we will go onshore even during a very short weather window. The short weather window will allow us to bring onshore a single generator, antennas and 5 radios and tent for certain period. The first landing will of course also include neces- sary food, water, heating and safety equipment for this period. After that the next zodiac runs will continue supplying another generator, more antennas, more fuel, radios, spare parts etc. As soon as we have the 2nd generator onshore Cape Fie this will be a full-scale DXpedition. We have prepared this high level approach of how to sequence the equipment and soon this will materialize into a very detailed plan of exactly what equipment is being loaded in what sequence. It means that we don't need a half day or full day of nice weather to start operating - we will do that even for very short weather windows down to 90-120 min. (D) We plan for a vessel inspection in Brasil in mid April. During this inspection we will prepare for a detailed vessel loading plan that will tell us exactly where we will store each single equipment in the sail- boat so to optimize the zodiac loading and landing at Bouvet. (E) We plan for a System test in Late April for 5 days where all team members will meet in Oslo, socialize, assemble the equipment and famil- iarize and test the radio/amps/antennas on air. After that we will do any adjustments if needed. (F) by 1st June all these important loading plans that are so important for the logistic concept will be finalized. Going to Bouvet is an enormous amount of planning and preparation, it means prioritizing down other parts of the hobby and prioritizing UP everything that is Bouvet related. It means spending literally hours every day on the 3Y0J project. Only this way can we achieve success. Let's go to Bouvet! -------------------------------------------------------- 3Y0J BOUVET ISLAND DXPEDITION NEWS (QSO Today Virtual - HamEXPO 2022). An active and strong supporter of the NCDXF/IARU DX Beacon program, Steve Lund, K6UM, of Newberg, Oregon, became a SK on February 4, 2022, after an extended battle with cancer. He served many years as an Appointed Position for the Northern California DX Foundation on the IARU Beacon Technical Support staff. Among his activities for the Beacon program, include: * Carefully obtained and curated a wonderful collection of spare radios and other parts for the V1 system, while V2 was in develop- ment. This work extended by many years, the life of the V1 beacon installations. * Provided technical assistance to the beacon operators to diagnose and keep beacons on the air. He often repaired and refurbished radios and controllers, from 2004, till V2 began deployment in 2016. * Steve had a strong sense of ownership for the beacon program, and worked closely with K6AW, Steve Merchant to keep the program alive. * Engaged in antenna field testing to provide performance information back to the Beacon operators, to improve the local Beacon performance. An ex-HP engineer, Steve contributed significantly to keeping the V1 setup functioning, and the design base for the V2 product. His interests, observations, and contributions will be missed. RIP OM.
