J2, DJIBOUTI (Update). Jeje, F8FKJ, will once again be active as J20EE from Djibouti City (WW Loc. LK11NN ) sometime this month and September (no specific dates announced yet). His activity will be on 40-10 meters using CW, SSB and FT8. Jeje states that he will "take a very small station that I can put it in my backpack." Equipment is a FT450d w/100w into antennas loop 21m (he is looking for a better antenna and more band). Updated QSL info is via F4DXW direct only. Watch QRZ.com for updates. J3, GRENADA (Update to OPDX.1571). Greg, N9GB, will be active as J38GB from Grenada between August 12-19th. He states [edited], "It is likely that there essentially will be no operation occurring on August 12th because we arrive late, and it will take some time to deploy the wire antenna. I tried it out this past weekend on a trip to GA and all checked out except for being able to load it on 75 meters. There just isn't enough wire to allow the tuner to match it. The equipment will be a 7300, external tuner (thank you ZAP), and an off center fed dipole with balun and using N1MM for logging. I am not sure what floor we are staying but hope to find that out by Wednesday of this week. I expect to be on CW and SSB on 40-6 meters including the WARC bands, but operation will be secondary to enjoying some vacation and relaxation. If possible I will try some FT8, but I believe my laptop has a bad sound card in it and will nix that." Greg stated a couple of weeks ago that his band plan will likely be 30 kHz above the bottom of band for CW and xxx90 for SSB (eg. 14190, 21290, etc). QSL via his home callsign (QRZ.com), LoTW, and possibly ClubLog. MD, ISLE OF MAN. Dale, EI7HDB, will once again be active as MD/EI7HDB from Isle of Man (EU-116) between August 14-19th. Co-Leaders Ken, LA7GIA, posted the following update on the 3Y0J Bouvet Island FaceBook page (https://www.facebook.com/groups/3093983840726129) [edited]: "3Y0J is currently staging all our 3.5 ton of equipment at Oslo airport in Norway, where we, within the next few weeks, will do final checks and pack all equipment. Container shipping is scheduled for mid-September. Next week- end several team members from Norway and US will gather and go through all checklists to make sure all small items are in the correct place. We have detailed out the logistic plan and have made a few changes. Among the improvements is that we have bought yet another outboard engine enabling us to use 2 zodiak boats simultaneously during beach landing to speed up the unloading of gear. In addition we have a 3rd spare zodiak+ engine. We have also swapped the Yanmar generators with some 5 kW QRO light- weight generators that will enable us to run full station setup with only 2 out of 4 diesel gens. We have also added some 2000l of versatile, robust and hardwearing IBC diesel tanks in various sizes. One of the requirements from Norwegian Polar Institute is that there must be absolutely no spillage of diesel. Each IBC tank will be placed in a tray and guyed to withstand the strong Bouvet wind. If you want to have the chance to work 3Y0J you can contribute and pay a small share of the vessel deposit by donating via paypal (bouvet at 3y0j.no). We still need 70,000 USDs. Thanks to NORLOG for offering FREE storage place for our equipment! 73 ,3Y0J team" ------------------------------------------- ADDED NOTE: Ken, LA7GIA, also posted the following video with the caption "Fly over Cape Fie on a nice day - 3Y0J QTH at the end of the video - unreleased video": https://www.facebook.com/723233575/videos/486574176574272/ 5E9, MOROCCO (Special Event). If you have new contacts, please prepare logsheets for them and send them to me. Details on how to prepare logsheets are found at (papays.com/sat). Please be sure that your mailing address is in the upper right header and that your log entries include the Grid Square. Do not expect Yuri to fill in missing grid squares. As Captain, Yuri has mailing amenities. His company's agent is re- sponsible for mailing out anything that he gives them to mail. Not all ports have good mail service and not all agents are reliable. The past two years have been difficult at times because some agents would refuse to take mail for fear of touching an envelope and contracting Covid. Many confirmations went by the wayside. Now we have an excellent chance of a good outcome so don't miss this opportunity. Please send your logsheets no later than 23 August. As Yuri gets closer to New Orleans, his duties multiply and there is little time for ham radio paperwork. I will not be looking at the logsheets for errors and I won't be sending email confirmations that I received your logsheets..... 73 and Good Luck in the Contest.... The operating bungalow will be on the far right. If all goes well, we will have one K4KIO hex- beam pointed to Europe and another pointed to North America. We will have two BigIRs and an 85 ft pole for our 160/80m antenna. We are also setting up an Innov 6m Yagi on a 17m pole. We hope to be the first ac- tivation on 60m and we hope to be lucky enough to give EU the low bands. Remember, activity will be on 160-6 meters using CW, SSB and FT8. Operators George/ K5KG, Steve/K4EU and Tom/K4NMR will be operating from Iceland (IOTA EU-21), September 6-20th, 2022. The trip was originally planned for the SAC CW Contest (Scandinavian Activity Contest), but the SAC was later cancelled. The team, however, kept their plans and will be there running pileups using TF/callsigns and working various contests, CWTs, state QSO parties, etc... K5KG initiated the trip by contacting Oskar, TF3DC. Oskar put George in touch with Benni, TF3T, who is building up the large TF3D station in the barren "moonscape" some 70 km from Reykjavik. Benni has been enormously helpful with the logistical arrangements and building and installing mono- band Yagis for the station. Helping Benni with the efforts is his brother, Gudmi, TF3SG. If all goes as planned, the team will be using three Elecraft K3's plus amplifiers. This will be George's 6th operation in Scandinavia, with the others being in the 1980's as K5KG/OH0 and K5KG/OH0/OJ0. Steve, K4EU, is a veteran of countless DX and contest operations, and Tom, K4NMR, like- wise has numerous DX operations under his belt from his Navy and Coast Guard days. THE TRANSATLANTIC CENTEARY TESTS (Press Release). Nick, G4FAL, RSGB HF Contest Committee Chair, informs OPDX of the following [edited]: The RSGB are hosting an International Amateur Radio Activation, The Transatlantic Centenary Tests, on the HF bands, for the entire month of December 2022, to commemorate the centenary of the achievement of Amateur Transatlantic communication, during the Transatlantic Tests that were held between 1921 and 1923. On December 24th, 1922, was when the very first amateur radio signal from Europe was heard in North America; this was from the RSGB station (G)5WS which was established at Wandsworth in South London, as part of the Third Transatlantic Tests. Unlike the tests of the 1920s, which consisted of one-way communication, the 2022 tests will encourage world-wide two-way communication with UK & Crown Dependency based stations by having a series of awards available for making QSOs with those who are activating special callsigns. The ClubLog team have kindly agreed to provide the supporting infrastructure for the Tests. In anticipation of this centenary celebration, with the assistance of Ofcom (the UK licensing authority), the RSGB have renewed five callsigns which they held in the 1920s: * G5WS, used for the 1922 tests - "he first to get across" * G5AT, used for the 1923 tests * G6XX, used for the 1923 tests * G6ZZ, used for the first amateur tests on a moving railway train in 1924 * G3DR, Scottish Highlands Call - GM3DR. These historic call signs will be activated by RSGB members and Clubs, using G5WS, G5AT, G6XX, G6ZZ and G3DR (England), GM5WS (Scotland), GW5WS (Wales), GU5WS (Guernsey), GD5WS (Isle of Man), GJ5WS (Jersey) and GI5WS (Northern Ireland). Full details of how to participate will be published on the RSGB website at: https://rsgb.org/transatlantic-tests TX5N AUSTRAL ISLANDS DXPEDITION WRAP-UP REPORT. The TX5N DXpedition took place April 16-29th, 2022. A 9 page article written by Gene Spinelli (K5GS, ZL1NA, VK2IXC) about the DXpedition is now available online at: https://tx5n.net/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/TX5N-Report-8-21-2022.pdf V4, ST.
