It is among the most challenging entities to activate due to significant transportation costs and personal sacrifices required by the team to make the 42 day round trip. Fortunately, Bouvet is not our first mountain. We are well prepared for this challenge. All plans are going well. We are researching polar quality tents and equipment. We are discussing antenna specifications with various manu- facturers. We will make careful choices to help us meet the demand for Bouvet contacts. We are delighted to add a second Physician to our team. Dr. Mike Crown- over/AB5EB and Dr. Bill Straw/KO7SS are both seasoned Emergency Physicians and will help the team immensely with their expertise. Our fund-raising is going very well. We have received a significant donation from our longtime friend Y. Zorro Miyazawa, JH1AJT. Zorro has always been an enthusiastic supporter of our missions and his generosity is greatly appreciated. We are pleased to announce that we will receive the ARRL's Colvin Grant, as well as large donations from the Far East DX-ploiters Foundation, the German DX Foundation and the Twin Cities DX Association. We would love to add your Club or your Call to our sponsors pages. This will be an arduous and expensive mission. Our budget is $764,000 USDs and the 3Y0J team will fund much of this mission. We desperately need the global DX Community to support our mission and help us make this important activation of the #2 most wanted DXCC entity. It is only through this kind of support that we can achieve our mission of making 100,000 contacts or more from Bouvet. In closing, we especially wish to thank our many Foundation, Club and Individual donors. Without this kind of support, operations to the world's rarest entities would not be possible. Please include your call sign, mailing address and email address with your PayPal submissions. We would not want to miss QSLing with you! You can follow our plans from our website and the 3Y0J Facebook: http://www.3y0j.com https://www.facebook.com/groups/3y0jbouvet2023 Thank you, Paul Ewing-N6PSE Co-Leader Kenneth Opskar-LA7GIA Co-Leader A3, TONGA (Update/Dates). In 2020 the Falkland Islands Communications Regulator sought to re-validate all extant Amateur Radio licenses. Notices and advertise- ments alerting amateur radio license holders to the need to re-validate their licenses were published. 2. It has come to the attention of the Communications Regulator that, notwithstanding the advertisement of the need for amateur radio licenses to re-validate their licenses some existing license holders failed to do so. Given this, the Communications Regulator has decided, exceptionally, to permit one final opportunity for all historic amateur radio licenses to re-validate them. 3. The reason that you are receiving this email is that your details have been provided by Mr Chris Gare on the understanding that you may be able to advertise this revalidation notice in order that it can reach the maximum number of licensees. 4. The attached Revalidation Notice, which should be published in full, sets out the terms and conditions under which revalidation is offered together with detail of how to apply and timings. THE SENATOR WAS A HAM (Barry Goldwater and Amateur Radio). Marilyn Murphy, Communication Manager for the Arizona Historical Society, announces that the Arizona Historical Society is hosting a virtual program looking at Arizona's most famous amateur radio operator, Barry Goldwater. The virtual event will take place on May 19th, between 6:00-7:00 AZ/PT. The Registration Link is: https://bit.ly/3mRPwTz The announcement states: Amateur or "ham" radio is a hobby and commun- ication service that has been bringing people together for over a century. Join ASU Associate Professor of History Eric Nystrom to discover the history of Arizona's most famous ham radio operator, U.S. Senator Barry Goldwater. Goldwater's association with amateur radio began in his Arizona youth when he constructed his own equipment, and the politician again picked up the hobby as an adult after a long hiatus. He was famous for his longtime ham radio shack in Paradise Valley, now preserved and on display at the Arizona Historical Society. Known on the airwaves as K7UGA, Goldwater sponsored legislation to shape the regulation of amateur radio in the United States. Using his radios, Goldwater and a group of organized volunteers connected service members stationed in Vietnam with their families back in the United States. Learn about ham radio's importance to Goldwater and his impact on the evolution of the amateur service in America. TX7, MARQUESAS ISLANDS. Paul, G4MWO, Editor of "The 5 MHz Newsletter", informs OPDX readers of the following [edited]: The 'old' 5 MHz ZL sub-license expired following the end of the two-channel 60m NZ trial in 2020. However, NZART is pleased to announce that negotiations with regulator RSM have been successful in obtaining a license to allow operation for all New Zealand amateur operators to use in the 60m (5 MHz) band using the WRC-15 allocation. Sincere thanks are due to Bob Vernall, ZL2CA, who did outstanding work by virtue of his position as an NZ government Approved Radio Engineer and ITU experience with the International Frequency Registration Board enabled him to put forward his project. Bob states: "I independently liaised with New Zealand Defense Force (NZDF) to implement a plan I formulated in January to clear a 60 meter band for amateur radio. NZDF liked my plan and it has relevance to other NZDF radio projects. As I'm an Approved Radio Engineer I can modify radio licenses and NZDF authorized me to make specified changes to their licenses, which cleared bandwidth for amateur radio. These changes were registered by RSM around midday on 8 April. That completed my contribution to development of a 60 meter amateur band in New Zealand." This made the new WRC-15 Amateur 5 MHz Secondary allocation clear for the next step which was for NZART to engage with the regulator RSM to formulate a new sub-license for the band: 5351.5 - 5366.5 kHz, Secondary Status, Maximum Power 15W EIRP, working together with the IARU 60 m Bandplan. NZART President Mark ZL2UFI explains: "The NZART license (and your sub-license) are for a twelve-month period to allow RSM to assess if there are any interference issues. If not, then NZART will negotiate with RSM to having the 60 m (5 MHz) band allocation added to the GURL (General User Radio License). If this negotiation is successful, then the need for the sub-license will not be required in the future." Bruce, K5TEN, who usually activates Dog Island (WW. Loc EL79) every year in June as K4D, will be active this year between June 7-18th. Dog Island (USI FL005S, WW Loc.EL79), Florida, is an extremely rare IOTA because access is controlled by the 25 or so homeowners on the island. There are no hams on the island, and the only activations have been done by Bruce over the last 7 years. Access is by permission only and permission by one of the homeowners. It is only accessible by private charter or single engine fixed wing aircraft. The airstrip is overgrown so private charter is the only real choice. There are no streets, roads, stop signs, trendy cafes, or beach-front bars. If you need it, you bring it. This year's activity will only be on 40-6 meters primarily on CW, SSB and FT8 Digital mode using 100 watts an ICOM 7100 into an off center fed dipole. Suggested frequencies are 7188/7035, 10120, 14260/14045, 18125/18075, 21280/21035, 28310/28010 and 50135/50095 kHz. He is expected to operate in this year's ARRL June VHF Contest. KH0, MARIANA ISLANDS (Satellite Op). Jim, ND9M (aka VQ9JC), who has been active as ND9M/mm from wet grids in the Pacific, is now anchored in Saipan (OC-086), and plans to go ashore and be active as ND9M/KH0. He provided the following update/wrap-up of his wet grids on May 11th: "We arrived safely at Saipan in QK25 (grid) this afternoon; the 'hook' (anchor) has been dropped after almost a month underway. Here are the numbers for the voyage: * I made 951 QSOs from 62 grids in 12 different grid fields. * Of those QSOs, 285 were made using SSB, 161 with FM, and 505 on CW. * 11 satellites were used for 152 passes in which QSOs were made. I was on an additional 31 passes in which no QSOs were made. * RS-44 was by far the hardest satellite for me to use, but even so 423 contacts (44%) were logged over that one. Also, AO-91 held up well enough to produce 146 contacts (15%) by itself. * All logs have been uploaded to LOTW. I'm still working on QSO fills. I'll be on from our anchorage while we're here over the next month. But although we're close to shore, operating from the ship does not carry DXCC credit, so I'll take the gear ashore and operate as ND9M/KH0 as it's been several years since anyone's been on satellite from the island." KH6, HAWAII (Update/Special Event). Several Hawaiian Amateur Radio operators will activate the special event station K6K to celebrate "King Kamehameha the Great and Hawaii's Rich History" on June 11th, between 06:00am HST - (1600z) until 10:00pm HST (0600Z). Excerpts from a press release by Michael, KH6ML, states [edited]: Amateur Radio Operators will activate special-event station K6K to celebrate King Kamehameha the Great and Hawai'i's rich history. K6K special event station will give HAMS a chance to add Hawaii to their logs to earn WAS or DCXX awards. Successful radio contacts are eligible to receive a special and inscribed a certificate bearing the full-color rendition of K6K: King Kamehameha Celebration. After hearing about the cancellation of all King Kamehameha Celebration parade events statewide, Michael Miller - KH6ML , a community emergency coordinator, spoke with amateur radio operators and a few people with the Commission to see if there was a level of interest to make the event happen. This station is authorized by the King Kamehameha Celebration Commission as an official event. The Kamehameha Day Holiday was proclaimed by King Kamehameha I's grand- son, Lot Kapuaiwa - King Kamehameha V, in 1871, followed by an inaugural celebration of events on June 11, 1872. Years later, in 1939, the Com- mission was formed under the Hawai'i Territorial Legislature. TO VIEW A SHORT CLIP OF 2020 lei draping and short history, see: https://fb.watch/4rB_6oMA7H Operating Rules: * This is not a contest. The idea is to allow as many operators as possible to reach the contact station operators and learn about King Kamehameha the Great and why he is celebrated in Hawai'i. * All radio operators must operate their stations strictly in accordance with their countries' or FCC regulations. Any authorized amateur radio frequency may be used. * Stations should listen for K6K calling "CQ K6K" * The main modes will be SSB, FM, FT-8, and Winlink. Other Modes may be added. * QSLS: eQSLs are available via LoTW. NO Paper QSLs. * CERTIFICATES: Are self-printed (by you) for contacts with our Special Event Station. NEWS RELEASE: CQ Announces 2021 Hall of Fame Inductees (edited) Announcing: 2021 Inductees to the CQ Amateur Radio, Contesting and DX Halls of Fame Amateur Radio Hall of Fame Welcomes Six New Members; Two Each to DX and Contest Halls of Fame (Sayville, NY - May 20, 2021) - CQ magazine is pleased to announce its 2021 Hall of Fame inductees, including two new members each for the CQ DX Hall of Fame and the CQ Contest Hall of Fame, along with six inductees to the CQ Amateur Radio Hall of Fame. This year's inductions are again being conducted online due to event cancellations resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. The CQ Amateur Radio Hall of Fame honors those individuals, whether licensed hams or not, who have made significant contributions to amateur radio; and those amateurs who have made significant contributions either to amateur radio, to their professional careers or to some other aspect of life on our planet. This year, we are inducting six new members, bringing to 339 the total number of members inducted since the hall's establishment in 2001. The 2021 inductees (listed alphabetically) are: * Archibald Doty, W7ACD (SK), engineer, inventor, researcher into efficient radial systems for vertical antennas and pioneer of college radio; co-founded what is now WESU at Wesleyan University in Connecticut in 1939, the second-oldest college radio station in the U.S.; also served as a pilot in the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II. * Nathaniel Frissell, W2NAF, founder of HAMSci (Ham Radio Science Citizen Investigation), a collaboration between radio amateurs and ionospheric scientists; organizer of the 2017 Solar Eclipse QSO Party, which also served as a research project on the effects of a total solar eclipse on HF propagation. * Lorin Hollander, WA1PGB, world-renowned classical concert pianist who has performed with virtually every major philharmonic orchestra in the United States, along with many others overseas; heavily involved in music and arts education and in relationships between music and medicine. * Christopher Imlay, W3KD, ARRL Counsel and General Counsel from 1982-2018; represented the League before the FCC on a wide variety of issues, including PRB-1, now enshrined in FCC Rule 97.15 b), that requires state and local regulations to reasonably accommodate amateur radio antenna structures. * Cathryn Mitchell, M0IBG, Academic Director of the University of Bath Doctoral College (UK) and recipient of the 2019 Edward Appleton Medal "for pioneering research in tomography and data assimilation revealing a completely new perspective on Earth's ionosphere in response to extreme space weather." * Admiral Charles "Chas" Richard, W4HFZ, commander of USSTRATCOM, the United States Strategic Command, one of eleven unified commands of the Department of Defense; served previously as Commander of U.S. submarine forces and Director of Undersea Warfare at the Pentagon. CQ DX and Contest and Halls of Fame The CQ DX and Contest Halls of Fame honor those amateurs who not only excel in personal performance in these major areas of amateur radio but who also "give back" to the hobby in outstanding ways. The CQ DX Hall of Fame was established in 1967 to recognize those amateurs who have made major contributions to DXing and DXpeditioning. This year, we induct two new members. The 2021 inductees are: * Jacky Calvo, ZL3CW/F2CW, a veteran of the French Air Force and the International Committee of the Red Cross, with postings that took him (and his ham station) to a dozen countries around the world; a participant in more than two dozen DXpeditions and WRTC (World Radio- sport Team Championship) competitions from 2010-2018 and is a team leader for 2022. * Francesco Valsecchi, IK0FVC/HV0A, who has regularly activated Vatican City for the past 30 years using HV0A and other call signs, as well the Sovereign Military Order of Malta (SMOM) as 1A0KM. Along with fellow operators. Francesco has logged more than 300,000 QSOs for the two tiny entities, averaging roughly 10,000 contacts per year for hams around the world. The CQ Contest Hall of Fame was established in 1986 to recognize those amateurs who have made major contributions to the art of radio contesting. The 2021 inductees are: * Robert Wolbert, K6XX, a "renaissance man" of contesting, advancing the state of the art in designing amateur equipment at Elecraft, a participant in more than 1100 contests over 35 years and a many-time winner (he is a 9-time recipient of the Jim Maxwell Memorial Trophy for the highest-scoring California single-op unassisted station in the ARRL DX CW Contest); member of the organizing committee for the first WRTC in 1996 and a team leader in 2000 and 2014; has authored many articles for amateur contesting publications, presented at multiple conferences and is a longtime member and leader of the Northern California Contest Club (NCCC). * David A. Pruett, K8CC (SK), author of the NA contest logging program as well as a log-checking program and host of many multi-multi oper- ations from his Michigan contest station over 30 years; longtime chairman of the Michigan QSO Party; former editor of the National Contest Journal and longtime member and leader of the Mad River Contest Club. Formal inductions to the CQ Contest and DX Halls of Fame are being conducted online once again, as a result of the COVID-19-related cancellations of the Dayton Hamvention? and associated contest and DX dinners. CQ World Wide DX Contest Director John Dorr, K1AR, led the Contest Hall of Fame induction at the conclusion of Contest Uni- versity's online seminar on May 20, while CQ DX Editor Bob Schenck, N2OO, will conduct the DX Hall of Fame induction on May 26 during the "Ham Nation" podcast on the Ham Radio Crash Course YouTube channel. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TO BE ADDED TO THE OPDX MAILING LIST -- Click or send requests to: Subscribe: (mailto:kb8nw at hotmail.com?subject=subscribe) Unsubscribe: (mailto:kb8nw at hotmail.com?subject=unsubscribe) ** PLEASE NOTE FOR OUTLOOK USERS: PLEASE put your E-mail address also in the body of the message. [edited] From the International DX Convention: The Intrepid-DX Group is pleased to announce the recipient of the annual "Intrepid Spirit Award". We are pleased to have received so many worthy nominations to consider. This year's award goes to a notable DXer Johannes Hafkenscheid, 5T5PA, who was very active while living and working in Mauritania throughout 2020. This award is to recognize Johannes's outstanding efforts to activate Mauritania during the Covid-19 Pandemic. We recognize Johannes's unselfish act to activate this challenging and much needed entity on behalf of a grateful Global DX Community. During 2020, Johannes made 35,000 contacts and made a total of 192,514 contacts during his years of activity from Mauritania. It is for these reasons that we honor him with our Intrepid Spirit Award, presented at the International DX Convention, on May 16th, 2021. This "Intrepid Spirit Award" is made in memory of our fallen friend and member, James McLaughlin, T6AF, who was killed in Kabul, Afghanistan in April, 2011. The award is intended to recognize and honor those individuals or teams that boldly activate rare entities where their own personal safety is secondary to their pursuit of providing contacts to the DX Community. Their activity will also include the RSGB IOTA Contest (July 24-25th). QSL info TBA. EU-137. (Update) Last week we mentioned that Anders, OZ3ACB, will be active as SM7/OZ3ACB from Ven Island sometime during mid-May. Anders informed OPDX of the following this past week [edited]: "I will be active throughout the summer in my spare time (pri- marily weekends) from the Island of Ven located in the sound between Denmark and Sweden. I had hoped to be active during last weekend, but the weather is currently a bit unsettled here in Denmark and I need fairly good weather to take the boat to Ven and operate outside. Next weekend (May 22-23rd) looks better, so I'm crossing my fingers and the weather will surely improve in the coming weeks! I will be active on the HF bands (40-10m) depending on band conditions. Primarily with digimodes, but also a bit of SSB. The rig is an FT-991 and I'm using multiband EFHW antennas." QSL via LoTW and eQSL (preferred), or direct to his home callsign. There will be a log search on ClubLog. EU-180. Russian operators Oleg/R7LP, Ivan/UA6MF, Tom/R6AW, Yuri/RX6CM, Sergey/RU3EG, Sergey/RX3F and Maxim/RU5D will be active as R24NEW from Bakal'skiy (Peschanyi) Island between June 22-27th. Activity will be on 80-10 meters using CW, SSB and FT8, with three stations on the air. Operators may also use their home callsigns and sign homecall/p. QSL R24NEW via UA6MF, direct, by the Bureau or ClubLog's OQRS. JW0W SVALBARD DXPEDITION NEWS (Updates)...... * Ken, LA7GIA, posted the following on FaceBook, May 21st [edited]: "Unfortunately 2 operators had to withdraw due to personal reasons, but we have managed to replace those and hope to be 6 operators when departing in July. Going to Prins Karls Island in JW requires a de- dicated expensive vessel that will transport us from Longyearbyen to the island located in the nature reserve at the west coast. Last activation of this island was in 2001. When arriving we will be doing dinghy landing with all equipment. The 3Y0J team members will do some additional practice runs with the dinghy ; ) We will focus on NA and Asia outside the IOTA contest, and we will do all modes CW, SSB and FTx. Our antennas will be VDAs and verticals at the shore close to saltwater with excellent take-off in all direc- tions! Due to the high risk for polar bear all over the island, we will have mandatory 24/7 polar bear watch. We will have several rifles, flare guns and other protection. Safety is a high priority and all team members will do training at a local shooting range. Our budget is roughly 13,000 USDs and we will appreciate donations via PayPal to: jw0wpk at gmail.com Thank you for supporting this trip! All the support will go to offset the expensive vessel cost! 73, JW0J team" * Erwann, LB1QI, posted the following on FaceBook, May 21st [edited]: New members onboard -- We are very happy to welcome Allan Batievsky, EA3HSO, and Ronny onboard our Dxpedition to Prins Karls Forland (EU-063) between the 21st and the 26th of July 2021. Allan, a well experienced contester and Dxpeditioner, will join the operators and Ronny will be in charge of our Security while on the island as the risk of being greeted by polar bears at some point of our stay is high. We will all have polar bears watch duties but he will keep the security at a high level while we concentrate on main- taining the antennas and contacting you! SWODXA NEWS (2021 DXpedition of the Year). The Southwest Ohio DX Association (SWODXA) has announced their 2021 DXpedition of the Year award. The award goes to VP8PJ South Orkney Island DXpedition (February-March 2020). The DX- pedition team consisted of: Dave/K3EL and Les/W2LK (Co-Leaders), Gene/K5GS, Arliss/W7XU, Heye/DJ9RR, Laci/HA0NAR, Vadym/UT6UD, Walt/N6XG, Rob/N7QT, Steve/W1SRD, Mike/WA6O, Ken/NG2H, Hans-Peter/HB9BXE and Alan/VK6CQ. Usually, the Southwest Ohio DX Association presents their DXpedition of the Year Award each year at the annual DX Dinner during the Dayton HamVention. VK9X, CHRISTMAS ISLAND (Update/Reminder). Steve, VK6SJ, who is expected to be active as VK9XX from Christmas Island (OC-002), reports last week [edited]: "VK9XX will be active from the 28th May for between two and three weeks, but I'll be working on the island so not on 24/7. I will be taking a Yaesu FT-857D and a simple Sotabeams antennas plus an ATAS mobile vertical. I will also be barefoot. This will also be mostly outside working hours and focused on the night time bands and mainly FT8. My first priority will be work and I doubts that I will have any time during the day so any requests for operation during the day are unlikely to be filled. QSL for this operation will be via EB7DX. David did a sterling job on VK9CE and very happy to have him back on this operation. The plan is to operate a separate band each night (I don't want to go out and change the antenna at night! :) ) Caveat here is that if I have a dead band, I will change band rather than call into nothing. Expected hours of operation will be 1100-1500z and 2200-0000z each day. If I get ahead of schedule in my work, I may squeeze in a day off, in which I will see if I can tune up the dipole on 6m, 10m & 15m during the day. I also hope to have an icon on this page (QRZ.com) that shows when and where I'm on air." Steve provides the following schedule and suggested frequencies on QRZ.com: Schedule Bands Suggested Frequencies (kHz)/Modes ---------------- --------------------------------- 80m (May 31st/June 4th/June 8th) 3625/SSB and 3567/FT8 40m (May 29th/June 2nd/June 6th/June 10th) 7180/SSB and 7056/FT8 30m (May 30th/June 3rd/June 7th/June 11th) 10131/FT8 20m (May 28th/June 1st/June 5th/June 9th) 14280/SSB and 14090/FT8 Steve states [edited]: "All FT8 operation will be Fox & Hound mode. Please read up on this mode (FT8_DXpedition_Mode.pdf (princeton.edu)) so you don't call in my spot (around 350Hz) or you won't get answered (the software only recognizes calls above 1000Hz). I will only be doing a single stream as being barefoot, I think if I go more than 1 stream, I'll probably disappear into the noise, never to be heard again! :) I will stop FT8 at the end of each hour and try SSB for 10 minutes minimum. If I get a run on SSB, I'll stay there until I don't, then return to FT8. SSB operation will be split frequency, listening 5kHz up and +/- QRM. Please please be gentle with me though. I'm using a simple mobile rig and low power so I need the pileup to be ordered or I'll just go back to FT8. During the CQWPX CW contest on the 29th and 30th, I may answer a bunch of stations calling CQ Test, but I don't think my CW is up to managing a pileup. Happy to do the odd sked on CW. Email me if you want to try something. E-mail is on my home call QRZ page. I know there are a bunch of JAs looking for VK9X on 6m. E-mail me if you think the band is open and I'll give it a shot. Not sure what I'll have on 6m yet but as a minimum it will be a mobile vertical on the balcony." Steve usually post updates on QRZ.com. ------------------------------------------------ VP2V, BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS. Gary, NC3Z, Gary, will be active as VP2V/NC3Z from Tortola, British Virgin Islands (NA-023), between June 3-14th. His activity will be on 40-6 meters using SSB and FT8/FT4; as propagation dictates. His equipment is a FT-891 with 100 watts into a SuperAntenna MP1 on the beach and various wire antennas. QSL via LoTW (primary) and ClubLog. VP5, TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS. Operators Dennis/K2SX, John/K4BAI, Jim/K4QPL and Johnnie/KR4R will be active as VP5/homecall from Providenciales Island (NA-002) between May 25th and June 1st. The group will be there for the CQWW WPX CW Contest (May 29-30th) signing as VP5M (possibly) as a Multi- Single/Low-Power entry. QSL VP5M via K4QPL or LoTW. QSL all others via their home callsign. YL21, LATVIA (Special Event). The Ice Hockey World Championship is being held in Riga, Latvia, between May 21st and June 6th. To mark this event, members of the Latvian Radio Amateur League will activate special event callsign YL21ICE. Operation will take place from several locations on all bands (160-10 meters including 30/17/12m and VHF/UHF) and modes (CW, SSB, RTTY, FT8/FT4). Several stations could be active on different bands/modes at the same time. A special electronic award will be available to download from QSL.Services (https://qsl.services/event/YL21ICE). To obtain the award, applicants must collect 16 points on regular band and mode slot (CW, VOICE, DATA) basis. Each QSO score two points for European stations and four points for the rest of the World. All possible computerized modes (RTTY, FT4, FT8, etc.) counts as DATA and all possible voice modes (SSB, AM, FM, etc.) counts as VOICE. SWLs earn single point for every QSO under the same rules. To apply for the Award send your ADIF SWL log extract to: es5zf at inbox.lv Z2, ZIMBABWE. Peter, PA3CPI, seems to be back in Zimbabwe and is active again as Z21DX. The length of his stay is not known. He was heard on 20 meters SSB (14247.5 kHz between 1743 and 1757z).
