Tim, K3LR, posted the following (For the Contest Hotel Committee) on June 4th [edited]: Attention Contesters and DXers! Contest-related activities that have previously taken place at the Crowne Plaza Hotel during the Dayton Hamvention(R) are moving to the Hope Hotel beginning in 2022. In May 2022, official Contesting activities will be at the Hope Hotel, including four nights of the Contest Super Suite, Contest University, The Top Band Dinner, The Contest Dinner and the KC DX Club CW copying competition. There may be additional related events as well. The Hope Hotel is an excellent facility, well suited for Contesters and DXers. There is plenty of parking and it is located closer to the Ham- vention than the downtown Dayton hotels. The Hope Hotel is adjacent to the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. Guests do not go through the security gate. We have spent almost two years working on this project and we believe you will enjoy the change of venue. Room reservations will be taken by the Hope Hotel starting on Tuesday, June 8, 2021, at 9 AM EDT. Do not call them before that time. You can get room reservations by phone only. If you try to book on line you will see that there are no rooms for those dates. Every room in the Hope Hotel has been blocked for Contesters and DXers for Hamvention week. Starting Tuesday June 8, 2021, at 9 AM EDT, you can call 937-879-2696 and ask for a reservation in the Contest University 2022 room block. There is no minimum night commitment. The room rate is 143 USDs per night plus tax and that includes a hot buffet breakfast each day of your stay. The room rate is the same for a single queen, two queens or a single king with a pull out. If you have 2022 reservations at the Crowne Plaza (now the Radisson Hotel Dayton) you can contact the Radisson at (937) 224-0800 to cancel and obtain any refunds. The Radisson is aware of the venue change for our activities. Please spread the word to all Contest Club reflectors, etc. We look forward to seeing you on Wednesday night, May 18, 2022, for the first night of the 2022 Contest Super Suite at the Hope Hotel. https://www.hopehotel.com/ -------------------------------------- MDXC PRESENTATION. NA-039/ Hal, W8HC, sent out the following press release (dated June 7th) NA-070. about the upcoming KL7RRC July IOTA DXpedition [edited]: The KL7RRC Kiska (NA-070) and Adak (NA-039) Islands IOTA Expedition by the Russian Robinson Club (RRC) scheduled for early July is still on track. Team leader Yuri, N3QQ, reports that all of the advance gear has arrived in Dutch Harbor, AK, and the chartered 56-foot aluminum hull cutter SV Seal, sailing out of Cordova, AK, should arrive at Dutch later this week to pick up all of the supplies necessary to support the 5 man operation at Kiska. Meanwhile, members of the KL7RRC team, consisting of Hal/W8HC, Rob/N7QT, Walt/N6XG, Tim/NL8F and Yuri/N3QQ will fly to Adak Island on June 30th. They will operate from Adak for 3 or 4 days while they await arrival of Seal following its 450 mile continued sail westward in the Aleutians following its stop at Dutch to pick up the staged expedition supplies. Plans call for the team to board Seal on July 3rd at Adak and continue out into the Bering Sea for the 260 mile journey to Kiska Island. With Seal on anchor in the old Kiska harbor, the team will set up their operating camp onshore with 3 stations QRV commencing July 7th. KL7RRC is scheduled to operate for 6 days at this rare IOTA entity after which they will strike camp and make the return sail back to Adak. JW0W SVALBARD DXPEDITION NEWS (Update). Ken, LA7GIA, posted the following on FaceBook (https://www.facebook.com/groups/288876866220488), June 4th [edited]: JW0W expedition to Prins Karls Forland Island west of Svalbard is going well (20-26th July). Today we received the final permit from authorities to access the nature reserve west of Svalbard. The area is only accessible by boat roughly 3h west of Longyearbyen. Progress since last update: * We plan for 60/40/30/20m as main bands with VDA and verticals, but will also have a Spanish Quad on 17/15/12/10m with us. * We now plan for 4-5 stations with Elecraft K3/Kx3 and 1000W amplifiers which includes inband operation and all modes CW/SSB/FT8. * We have extended the security and will bring with us 2 Huskys for added polar bear protection in addition to one person on duty 24/7 * We need an expensive mandatory SAR insurance. This adds to the expenses so our budget is going up to 16000 USDs. We are grateful that we have 8 supporters so far donating to the DX- pedition expenses. All supporters get a free express QSL card and LoTW from our QSL Manager Charles Wilmott, M0OXO. If you want to support us, please paypal to: jw0wpk at gmail.com Thanks to FUNKAMATEUR for supporting us. "Celebrating 30 years (March 1991) of FREE DX News" "Could this be the last year???" 3Y0J BOUVET ISLAND 2023 DXPEDITION NEWS (Press Release; Canceled!).[edited] To the global DX community. We regret to inform you of the following news. The global pandemic has impacted the expedition charter vessel business very hard; this includes the venerable RV Braveheart which has provided outstanding safety and service to many DXpeditions. As you know, we had signed a contract with Braveheart for 3Y0J. Today, we were informed that Braveheart will be sold. As a result, Nigel Jolly will no longer be associated with the ship, our contract with the ship has been cancelled and our deposit will be refunded. This is a very disappointing development to all involved. At this time, we are cancelling the 3Y0J Dxpedition. We have ceased accepting donations and we will begin refunding 100% of the donations using the same method they were received, i.e., PayPal, cash or check. This process will take several weeks to sort out, so please be patient. We wish to thank our team for putting their trust in us. We wish to thank all of the donors and sponsors that gave generously to this project. We will continue to research other ships and possibly find another suitable vessel for a future project. 73, Paul Ewing, N6PSE Kenneth Opskar, LA7GIA ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TO BE ADDED TO THE OPDX MAILING LIST -- Click or send requests to: Subscribe: (mailto:kb8nw at hotmail.com?subject=subscribe) Unsubscribe: (mailto:kb8nw at hotmail.com?subject=unsubscribe) ** PLEASE NOTE FOR OUTLOOK USERS: PLEASE put your E-mail address also in the body of the message. If you missed OPDX Special Bulletin (OPDX.1519.1), it was announced that the 2023 Intrepid Bouvet Island DXpedition has been canceled due to their planned ship the famaous "RV Braveheart" which has provided outstanding safety and service to many DXpeditions has been sold. Many DXers are asking "WHY NOT CHARTER ANOTHER SHIP?" Paul, N6PSE, Team Co-Leader posted the following on June 14th, on eHam.net: "Many have asked us why don't we charter another boat? That seems logical. We always have a 'Plan B' and we have approached other expedition charter vessels including the Cdt. Fourcault based in Belgium and the Hanse Explorer (which has been to Bouvet). Both of these ships have a charter cost of over 1 million USDs to go to Bouvet. That is not affordable for a DXpedition of 14 men. The Braveheart's charter cost was 652,000 USDs for 42 days or just over 15,000 USDs per day, which was our upper limit. The Braveheart is fit, sturdy and seaworthy with her survey complete. They have business booked two years out but cannot afford to be in lock- down any longer with no immediate business. I am told that the Braveheart is likely to be scrapped. It is the end of an era." Ken, LA7GIA, Team Co-Leader, also posted the following on June 14th: [edited] Braveheart was sold 14 months ago to a new owner Pacific 7. Pacific 7 have since then only used Braveheart 20 days locally in ZL. According to Pacific 7 there are no trips for Braveheart from mid 2020 until mid 2022, for two years. With all the running costs 100,000 USDs pr year and no income, they can not keep her. Pacific 7 have been selling other vessels for some time already to keep the cash-flow, now when they can not afford to pay the mortgage they have to sell. If there are no buyers they have to scrap it. There are a lot of costs involved in having a vessel, a lot of uncertainties in these times, and also, if you leave there is a risk for getting stuck in a foreign port. Many companies have ceased their activity well into 2023, and many do not offer tours in the 21/22 season and 22/23 season in the southern hemisphere. We have searched for a substitute vessel for a long time already without any luck." HOWEVER, on June 18th, the following was posted from the Intrepid-DX Group [edited]: "Since the cancellation of 3Y0J, we have been working closely with Nigel Jolly to form a new plan, with a new owner of Brave- heart a revised payment plan that enables Nigel Jolly to continue managing Brave heart which will keep it available for DXpeditions for years to come. We are working out the details of this plan and hope to have some very positive news very soon. We have not given up! Thank you, Bouvet 2023 Team" 5Z, KENYA.
