Will, WC6DX, IOTA Dinner Coordinator, Visalia International DX Convention, sent out the following on December 3rd: Greetings IOTA enthusiasts -- As the 2021 Visalia (California) International DX Convention was virtual, we did not have our annual IOTA Dinner Banquet in person. To maintain our legacy as the longest running annual IOTA get-together, I am planning to host an online Zoom virtual meeting on Saturday, December 11th, from 1900-1940 UTC, similar to last year. My Zoom account is limited in time and number of participants, and I sincerely regret not being able to open it up to everyone in the IOTA community who may be interested. I will be sending a Zoom invitation in a few days to those persons who attended or presented at a live dinner at Visalia in the recent years prior to the pandemic quarantine. Members of the IOTA Committee will also be invited as a courtesy. For now, the 2022 Visalia International DX Convention is expected to resume live, and I look forward to breaking bread once again with our IOTA friends in person. XT2, BURKINA FASO (Reminder). Ray, HB9DNG/F5UKV (ex-9Q5RP), will be moving and be active as 3B8HH from the small village of Pereyb?rein, very close to Cap Malheureux in the north part of Mauritius, starting around the January 20th, 2022. He informs OPDX that he will be running up to 100 watts into wires and EndFed antennas. Activity will be on 80-2 meters (possibly 160m) using mainly CW and some SSB. Having his station is completely installed, Ray plans to operate some digital (PSK at the beginning; then RTTY). He also mentions that he might use FM on 10 meters. His operating schedule will be more or less daily; probably starting from 1800 UTC and onward accordingly to propagation conditions. Regarding QSLing, Ray states that he is "from the old school and like 'paper QSL'." At the very beginning, Ray will start with direct QSLing, but very quickly will use the Mauritian MARS (Mauritius Amateur Radio Society) QSL Bureau. Currently, he does not have a QSL Manager. QSL via OE1TRI (Bureau). 9N, NEPAL (Update). Robert, 9N7AA (S53R), posted following update on QRZ.com, dated December 11th [edited]: We have now moved to the new resi- dence and a couple of vertical dipoles were strung from a Spiderbeam pole on the upper terrace of our top floor apartment. I mostly run on 17m as other bands sound rather empty. A new antenna mast was manufactured locally and delivered today and Ultra Beam / WIMO 2 element Yagi (40-6m) is still at the customs. If all stars align, I will be able to install it before the end of the year. 160/80 will have to wait for a while, though. I have an idea how to install quarter-wave slopers, but this will need some negotia- tions with the neighbors, as the wires will go over two adjacent land plots. Kathmandu is veeeeery densely populated. Equipment from my previous operation is still stuck in Kabul and we are trying hard to bring it to Kathmandu. As of very recently a single com- mercial flight is finally available to Dubai, so there is a little tiny light at the end of the tunnel. For those constantly asking - 60m band is not permitted in Nepal. QSL via S57DX, direct only, and of course, LoTW and ClubLog will be updated at least once a week. OQRS will also be enabled soon. Members of the F6KOP Radio Club that were planning to activate Comoros Islands (AF-007) sometime between mid-to-end January in 2022 have now postpone their operation due to current Covid situation. They state, "We must sadly announce that due to the actual pandemic situ- ation, travels to Austral Africa are no more allowed. We waited as long as possible and the decision was very difficult to take. It's safer for the team not to travel now. We decided to postpone the DXpedition later in 2022, when all gets again quieter." Look for more details to be forth- coming. The wireless transmission took place from Poldhu (Corn- wall, UK) to Saint John's (on the island of Newfoundland, Canada). The transmission of radio waves across the ocean was not - at the time - thought possible due to the earth's curvature; this was the thesis sup- ported by the scientists of that period. But Guglielmo Marconi managed to prove the groundlessness of those theories. Activity will ONLY be on CW on various HF bands. A special award is available (in PDF format); for details see QRZ.com. A special memorial commemorative QSL will be sent via Bureau to all QSOs. IOTA NEWS. TBDXC 2022 DX ULTRA- MARATHON (Press Release, dated December 6th). The following was sent out by Hans, LB6GG [edited]: The True Blue DXers Club is happy to announce the 2022 DX Ultra-Marathon. Introductory video at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H-Pcca3J56U This initiative was first launched in 2021, with the aim of promoting CW and SSB activity on the HF bands, during contests but also, and perhaps especially, in-between contests. By the end of the first year, we expect that nearly 200 brave DXers will have taken up the challenge, making a total of almost half a million QSOs. The results of the top scorers are nothing short of extraordinary, but it is heartening to see that the Ultra-Marathon was enjoyed by dozens of stations at all levels. Augusto, IK4RQJ, who topped the Low Power SSB category, says "I started out of pure curiosity, and then, slowly, the Marathon almost turned into a drug. Day after day I spent hours on the air, looking for QSOs... I would have never believed to be able to log nearly 12,000 QSOs in a year. The Marathon brought back the feelings I had at the beginning of my ham 'career', 30 years ago." The Ultra-Marathon has something for everybody. You can put in an all-out effort and compete for a top position in one of the many categories. Or, you can compete against yourself - see what you can achieve within the limits of your available time and setup. Most important is that this com- petition brings back the excitement of amateur radio, each and every day. This year-long competition is about contacting as many different stations as possible, on as many bands as possible, in as many DXCC countries and WAZ Zones as possible. Essentially, it is about making QSOs, working DX, being active and enjoying your hobby. The rules and the scoring system (https://www.tbdxc.net/marathon) are practically identical to the CQ World Wide contest. However, this is NOT a "59 001" kind of competition - it is NOT a year-long contest. It is intended to promote everyday activity on CW and SSB: real activity, real contacts, real QSOs between people, as opposed to computers talking to each other. Participating could not be easier. Once you have signed up and chosen your mode and power category, all you have to do is to make QSOs and then upload your log in ADIF format. You can do this as often as you want. Each time, your score is automatically calculated according to the rules, and the leader-board for your chosen category is updated. You will be able to track your progress and, if you are a competitive type, check your score against others in real time. We look forward to seeing you! Please remember that for registration, log upload, leader-boards, rules, Frequently Asked Questions, requests for help, and all things Marathon, the address is: https://tbdxc.hamserver.de/marathon/ 73, Hans Ostnell LB6GG - Marathon Manager ------------------------------------------------------------- TO9, ST. John, K4BAI, reminds everyone: "In case any of you have any current style IRCs that you have received, the current IRCs expire on December 31, 2021. You can find the expiration date on the reverse side. The United States Post Office no longer sells IRCs, but must redeem them for one stamp good for air mail postage to overseas countries. I found that I had received seven of them, mostly from Japan, and successfully traded them at my local post office for seven overseas air mail stamps. After December 31st, they will have expired and will have no value except a small value to a postage stamp/postal coupon collector. You may get some static from your local post office branch, but you should insist that they comply with their postal regulations, which are, in turn, part of their agreement with the International Postal Union." The following was posted on the "Rebel DX Group's" FaceBook page (https://www.facebook.com/rebeldxgroup) on December 20th [edited]: Folks -- We're still waiting for updates regarding travel ban to South Africa and overal covid situation there. We hope situation will be more clear very soon. We do not answer to some idiotic comments and ques- tions on several forums. Those guys know everything the best, so we are not in the position to even try to explain. No serious captain will allow the crew on board during this massive Covid wave in South Africa and some other countries. Imagine you are on the way, or there and half of us get sick. Some of those guys really lost their minds writing all that nonsense around. Trip to Bouvet will take a place NOT WHEN those clowns wish or want, it will take a place when it is safe to travel for all members and boat support crew. 3Y0J BOUVET ISLAND DXPEDITION NEWS (Press Release #7). The following was sent out by Erwann, LB1QI, and posted on the 3Y0J FaceBook page on December 22nd [edited]: 3Y0J DXpedition to Bouvet Island, November 2022 -- We're happy to inform about some news related to the upcoming Bouvet DXpedition. We have selected the Norwegian brand Arctic Lavvo who will supply us with their Venor Gamme tent. Arctic Lavvo will deliver custom made tents to the project that includes three tents for radio operation and sleeping. The manufacturer having its factory at latitude 70N is taking the extra step to ensure their high-quality products will sustain the Bouvet climate. The tent having been tested at JW Svalbard in extreme conditions up to 40 m/s will be improved further by adding extra guying levels and by strengthening the aluminium frame. We're confident selecting a Norwegian manufacturer with huge experience from this kind of climate is a wise decision. We also would like to inform about the selection of SILCOM as the sponsor of our yagi antenna masts. SILCOM will deliver custom made antenna masts rated for the Bouvet climate. They will be named ALU-3Y0J and GLV-3Y0J where we will use the alu mast for the tribanders and the smaller steal mast for the dualbander yagis. All masts have been through detailed engi- neering to optimize the technical specification and rating to fit our InnovAntenna/Wimo Yagis. The masts being a square telescopic mast with tilt-over functionality and winch can easily handle 35 m/s at 10m level. We're taking the preparation to the next level by procuring a milpro Zodiak. The strategic decision to buy the milpro Zodiak will enable us to train continuously on the critical beach landing in Norway. Having access to the exact same zodiac we will use at Bouvet, is just another step we have taken to ensure the success of this DXpedition. We also have a change in the team. 3 team members are leaving the team due to various health and personal issues. Sandro/VE7NY, Laci/HA0NAR and Dima/RA9USU are unfortunately leaving the team. We are happy to inform that we have already onboarded Cezar/VE3LYC and Otis/NP4G in the team. Their experience will be a great addition to the team. So far the team have spent more than 130,000 USDs out of the total budget. We have reached an income level of 500,000 USDs but still criti- cally need additional 160,000 USDs support to be able to make it. Going to Bouvet is a huge undertaking financially as all our expenses are up- front. If you want to have the opportunity to work the rare #2 DXCC Bouvet Island, please consider to donate upfront. We ask all clubs and individuals to support us so that we can put on a 3 weeks DXpedition show from Bouvet. You can follow our plans from our website and the 3Y0J Facebook pages: http://www.3y0j.no https://www.facebook.com/groups/3093983840726129 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YaMaR21075U Thank you, Oslo December 2021 Ken Opskar, LA7GIA, Co-Leader Rune Oye, LA7THA, Co-Leader Erwann Merrien, LB1QI, Co-Leader ----------------------------------------------------------- 5H, TANZANIA. Cezar, VE3LYC, informs the IOTA Community of the following: Dear IOTA chasers and activators -- I haven't been able to schedule this year any rare IOTA operation despite various attempts to do so. Meanwhile, in view of travel restrictions, I decided to put some time into writing a book about my past travels and activations. The book's title is "Dream Big and Dare to Fail", and it is a "first one" of sorts. That's because, as far as I know, it is for the first time than someone authors one fully dedicated to IOTA expeditions. The book has just been freshly printed and shipped from the printers. Those who may be interested in a copy will be able to order it in a couple of weeks. Until then, a first short introduction to it is available at: http://ve3lyc-book.weebly.com Feel free to email me directly any inquiries and/or expressions of interest you may have. Wishing you and your loved ones a very Merry Christmas, happy winter holidays, and a wonderful, joyful, healthy and successful New Year 2022! Cheers, Cezar, VE3LYC IOTA NEWS.
