Will, WC6DX, reports [edited]: Miguel, KC1LKO, has informed me that he will be operating as K1M from Monhegan Island in the State of Maine (IOTA NA-137, USI ME-019S) during August 9-21st, 2021. From a cottage, he will use as a base station an ICOM IC7300 running 100w to vertical antennas primarily for 20m/40m on SSB (no CW). He also plans to operate portable while backpacking with his wife, especially from the light- house up on the hill and by the island cliffs using a light- weight radio, an ICOM IC705 with a mini PA50 to run 10-30w to a Buddipole or similar antenna. Due to the low power, he may use FT-8 if he doesn't make many SSB contacts with the portable equipment. He is expecting to have internet at the cottage and will spot when he gets on the air from the base station. He has operated from Monhegan back in June and last year holiday style. With the 1x1 callsign, he is hoping to work some island chasers. Hint: Miguel grew up in Madrid, Spain, so calling him in Spanish would get his attention. PLEASE NOTE: Since the Webmasters of the have decided NOT to post or dedicate a Web page to announce upcoming IOTA operations, PLEASE send your IOTA operations information to the OPDX, and we will post it here in an upcoming bulletin...... KH4, MIDWAY ISLAND (KH6VV/KH4 DXPEDITION Update). Ron, KH6DV, posted the following on QRZ.com, August 2nd: The new management team is on island and trying to catch up with things the last team didn't do. The trick is to be on island when the albatross are gone. This year they are going to do a rodent extermination project while the albatross are off island, so the expedition can't be there while that is underway. I will send a note to DX-World shortly, but now you know it first. Aloha and good DX... KH9, WAKE ISLAND. "The Daily DX" is reporting that Stacy's, KK4WZI, trip to Wake Island (OC-053) "is not going to happen". KL7, ALASKA (POTA Op). DeWayne/W4FDT and Doug/N4DJR will be flying up to Alaska on August 11th, to meet up with Jeramy/KL7EC and Eric/KL5BO for an 800 mile interior Alaska POTA (Parks On The Air) activation. They have a list of around 25 parks that they are going to attempt to activate. However, the team suspects that they won't be able to activate all POTAs, but they will be able to activate a good majority of them, and will be focusing on those that haven't been activated before. Their callsigns that will be used are KL7EC, KL5BO, W4FDT/KL7 and N4DJR/KL7. Operators will be spotting themselves on the POTA spotting page at (http://pota.app), and will be using JS8 call and WinLink E-mail to get their spots out to the page. Operations will take place between August 13-15th. If you are a park hunter, this will be your time to get some parks in the log that may not ever be activated again or if you just need Alaska for your WAS, then they are going to be available for you also. NCJ NAQP NEWS (Recognition of Youth Entries). Ward, N0AX, reports: With CQ WW's announcement that it will recognize Youth entrants, don't forget the NCJ's North American QSO Parties will also recognize Youth entries in the Single-Operator category. Beginning with this month's NAQP CW (August 7-8th) and NAQP SSB (August 21-22nd) a Youth check box will be added on (https://3830scores.com/) and on the NAQP log upload app at (https://ncjweb.com/naqplogsubmit/). Operators age 25 and under may "self-certify" when checking the box. Youth scores will be included with the regular Single-Op scores and in their own table in the results. This is a great way to encourage youth participation in contesting and we hope other contests will do so, as well. OA7, PERU. Arno, DL1CW, will be active as OA7/DL1CW from Urubamba, Peru, between now and September 1st. Activity will be on 40-10 meters. QSL via his home callsign, by the Bureau or LoTW. P4, ARUBA. DokuFunk Archive (https://www.dokufunk.org/) reports: It is with deep sadness that we announce that our unforgettable curator, Wolf Harranth, OE1WHC, founder of the DokuFunk Archive, passed away on Tuesday, 03.08.2021 in Kloster- neuburg after a short and serious illness. Wolf Harranth was an Austrian children's book author, translator and journalist who also worked as a radio actor as a child. The most famous role he spoke on Austrian radio was that of "Wolferl" in "Our Radio Family". Afterwards he began to work at the publishing house Jungbrunnen, where he not only became an editor, but most recently also managing director. From the 1970s he was also active in the ORF and worked for the station Radio ?sterreich Inter- national (ROI). Wolf was also a very active radio amateur, who achieved great success in this area, which demanded a lot from him, but also gave him the greatest pleasures. With this hobby he came far more around the world and among the people than anyone could ever do in the classic way. From all these fields of activity, Wolf gathered friends around him, who now mourn him as a human being. OE1WHC has left the production line forever... The 3Y0J team are delighted to inform about our continued effort to activate Bouvet island. After cancellation of the previous attempt due to the ill-fated sale of the vessel Braveheart we decided to continue the effort and search for a suitable and affordable vessel. Today we announce that we have signed a contract with an expedition vessel with a proven track record and experienced polar crew that will take us to Bouvet in November 2022. The vessel is MARAMA and is fully booked for the 2021/2022 season. The cost is significantly reduced compared to our previous Braveheart charter. With the signing of the vessel contract we will start fundraising immediately. On this journey to Bouvet we have assembled a team of 12 operators and we plan to spend 20 days around Bouvet. The QTH at Bouvet?ya will be Cape Fie at the South East part of the island, the only feasible part where a DXpedition can safely setup the camp on rocky ground, we will not set camp on the glacier. We will have a wide area of 150 x 800 ft to setup the camp and the antenna farm. Back in April 2020 we started our effort to activate Bouvetoya - a Norwegian DXCC in South Atlantic Ocean and also known as the world's most remote island. In close co-operation with NPI we received the needed permits in September 2020 to activate Bouvetoya, which also included a helicopter permit. We also together with NPI researched and was provided photos that showed a beach landing was possible. In November 2020 we were approached by Intrepid and we joined our efforts. After the sale of Braveheart in June we informed Intrepid that we would continue our effort to activate Bouvetoya and search for a suitable and affordable vessel. Last week we were ready to launch the vessel news to the team members. As we sent out this information it was leaked to Intrepid group which caused Intrepid in a hurry to send out a press release the following day that they would go to Bouvet. ?The act of the team member came as a big surprise to us, the same did the announcement from Intrepid as they were informed we would continue the project. As of today we still hold the only valid amateur radio team license specifically issued for the purpose of activating Bouvet (3Y0J). With the NPI permits, the license, the signed vessel contract and a new ex- pedition vessel we're ready to move forward. The team of 12 operators will fund much of the budget but we also need the global DX Community to support our mission and help us make this important activation of the #2 most wanted DXCC entity. It is only through this kind of support that we can achieve our mission of making 120,000 contacts or more from Bouvet in November 2022. Without support there will be no activation. In closing, we especially wish to thank our many Foundations, Clubs and Individual donors. Without this kind of support, operations to the world's rarest entities would not be possible. You can soon follow our plans from our website 3Y0J.NO (please note change of website to .no ) and the 3Y0J Facebook group. Earlier in the week who would of thought that we would see "3" (yes three!!) Bouvet DXpeditions being planned for the next three years (2021/2022/2023). However, this all changed by August 12th, with one team canceling their plans for 2023 (see 2023 below). For the DX community, this is still great news to have two planned DX- peditions to Bouvet Island (DXCC's second most wanted entity) to take place during the next two years. Here is the current breakdown (as we know so far), by year, on the upcoming Bouvet Island operations: 2021 -- The Rebel DX Group is still reporting that they will be active this year from Bouvet Island (AN-002) as 3Y0I. The group's leader Dom, 3Z9DX, states that the team will make a second DXpedition attempt to Bouvet Island sometime in late 2021. The group's first attempt failed in March 2019 due to unrepairable damage to the ship's communication equipment. Currently, details about their planned operation is very quiet and not publicized. Their Web pages, FaceBook Pages and Twitter page are still active at (some not updated): https://bouvetoya.org https://www.facebook.com/bouvetoya.org http://jouban.jp/3y0i_ja (For JA stations) https://twitter.com/Bouvetoyaorg https://www.facebook.com/rebeldxgroup https://www.rebeldxgroup.com 2022 -- The 3Y0J Group has announced on August 8th, that Kenneth/LA7GIA (Co-Leader), Rune/LA7THA (Co-Leader) and Erwann/LB1QI (Co-Leader) have found a vessal with a proven track record and experienced polar crew that will take them to Bouvet in November 2022. The vessel is MARAMA: https://maramaexpeditions.com/en/sailboat-marama They have assembled a team of 12 operators and plan to spend 20 days around Bouvet. The QTH at Bouvet?ya (Bouvet) will be "Cape Fie" at the South East part of the island, the only feasible part where a DXpedition can safely setup the camp on rocky ground. They will not set camp on the glacier. Current list of operators are: Kenneth/LA7GIA, Rune/LA7THA, Erwann/LB1QI, Gjermund/LB5GI, Adrian/KO8SCA, Laci/HA0NAR, Dima/RA9USU, Bill/KO7SS (Physician), Sandro/VE7NY, Axel/DL6KVA, Mike/AB5EB (Physician) and one other to be announced. Activity will be on 160-10 meters, including 60/30/17/12m, using CW, SSB, RTTY and FT8/FT4. Frequencies are posted on their Web page. QSL via M0OXO, direct, OQRS (direct/ Bureau) or LoTW. Do NOT request via the normal Bureau card services as these will NOT be answered. Only use the OQRS online service. Option for free bureau cards will be activated at the end when all other cards have been sent out. The team is looking for funding. Sponsors who donate 50 USDs or more PRIOR to the DXpedition start will have their QSL card sent directly, as well as LoTW confirmation. There is no need to do anything if you are a sponsor of the DXpedition. The timing of the QSL cards and LoTW will be processed according to Sponsor level. For more details and updates, watch: https://www.3y0j.no Kenneth, LA7GIA, reports on August 11th: We're happy to announce that InnovAntenna and WIMO have renewed their sponsor- ship for 3Y0J and will supply us with all the Yagis. However, this all changed by August 12th. Paul, N6PSE, sent out the following on that date [edited]: Dear DX Community, We now find ourselves the #3 team in line to go to Bouvet. This recent development is not comfortable for us so we are now re-examining the Top Ten most wanted DXCC entities with a plan to redirect our efforts to an activation that will be most beneficial for everyone. We are now closing our plans to visit Bouvet, however we plan to activate a different rare and much needed entity in January/February 2023. That is now our focus. Watch for more updates on this exciting new project. We wish our former 3Y0J Teammates a safe and productive journey to Bouvet. FO/A, FO/M & TX7, AUSTRAL AND MARQUESAS ISLANDS (FO 6m DXpedition Update). Lance, W7GJ, sent out the following update on August 16th [edited]: Hello Sixers! -- As Es season draws to a close, it is of course time to gear up for EME ;-) Remember, if you have a good yagi, an amplifier, a quiet QTH and some ground gain, I can work you when your moon is near the horizon! Recently, a number of people have inquired regarding the status of my planned 6m DXpedition to the Austral Islands (FO/W7GJ) October 15-24th, and the Marquesas Islands (TX7MB), October 28th to November 7th. Due to the Delta Variant, Covid travel restrictions and requirements are changing weekly :-( However, I have reconfirmed all the flights and lodging, ar- ranged for special excess baggage, and am aiming for everything to take place according to the details on my website: http://www.bigskyspaces.com/w7gj/Austral%20Islands%202020.htm http://www.bigskyspaces.com/w7gj/Marquesas%202020.htm Certainly, the situation can change if I get Covid and fail any of the 4 Covid tests currently required and/or USA falls out of "favored country status" and I would be required to quarantine upon arrival, and/or Air Tahiti decides to reduce the number of flights (as it did last year). However, as you know from my past DXpeditions, I am doing everything I possibly can to make this increasingly expensive operation happen! Please spread the word that I am planning on using Q65-60A mode from the most recent version of WSJT-X for all my 6m EME activity. I will probably use FT8 for terrestrial/ionospheric propagation unless the TEP doppler spread requires Q65. Note that I have extended my stays in both DXCC to provide ample opportunity to try for terrestrial contacts as well as being QRV during moon passes. If you are going to try to work me on EME, please get on the air and become familiar with Q65 mode! Here is a checklist to help getting it set up: http://www.bigskyspaces.com/w7gj/Q65SETUP.pdf Please become familiar with the contact protocol I will be using on 6m EME, and only call me with TX2 if you are copying me during the immediately preceding sequence: http://www.bigskyspaces.com/w7gj/DXpedition%20Procedure%20with%20Q65.pdf I will be using an SDR as my receiver, so I have the capability to receive signals on the Wide Graph waterfall from 0 to 4000 Hz. However, as I write this, Q65 in the most recent version of WSJT-X only automati- cally decodes callers with offsets between 200 and 3000Hz. Therefore, please do your best to spread out over that range. Currently, you must manually offset your transmitter frequency accordingly (it does not adjust the transmitter automatically as in FT8). Please try to space yourselves around every 200 Hz, remembering that your moonset signals will be doppler shifted down approximately 100 Hz, and transmitting during moonrise will be shift your signal up approximately 100 Hz. And once you start transmit- ting on a certain offset frequency, please don't move! The ON4KST EME CHAT page has proven very useful for coordinating callers' offsets during past DXpeditions ;-) http://www.on4kst.info/chat/login.php?band=5 I hope to have periodic access to the internet to at least update my log and status. However, unless you are advised otherwise, please assume the EXCEL published operating schedule to be the most accurate and up-to- date and look for me accordingly: FO Schedule in Excel Spreadsheet format: http://www.bigskyspaces.com/w7gj/Marquesas%20Schedule.xls FO Schedule in pdf format: http://www.bigskyspaces.com/w7gj/Marquesas%20Schedule.pdf And if you are excited about seeing new DXCC being activated on 6m, contributions are MOST APPRECIATED! My PayPal account is this email address and my mailing address is shown below. GL and I hope to see many of you in the log! VY 73, Lance HD8, GALAPAGOS ISLANDS. Members of the "DX Friends Team",with an inter- national team of operators, are planning to be active as HD8R from San Cristobal Island (SA-004), the eastern most island in the Galapagos Islands group. Every year the award commitee selects a recipient for the award. The award includes a monetary grant for the recipient. Visit (https://arsaward.com for more information). They are accepting nomin- ations for the 2022 award at https://arsaward.com/award-nominations.html * ARSA committee awarded the 2nd annual Amateur Radio Software Award to Jordan Sherer, KN4CRD, and his project, JS8Call. The award committee has considered numerous factors in choosing this year's winner, including the project's impact on furthering the interests of amateur radio, innovation, and community involvement. JS8Call is a full- fledged weak-signal digital communication application for amateur radio operators. In the spirit of open-source, Jordan extended the popular FT8 protocol instead of reinventing the wheel. During the 5 years of development, JS8Call has become a new tool for ARES functions and has cultivated a community of radio enthusiasts for digital com- munications. Jordan's work on JS8Call provides important innovation to advance the art of radio in the digital field. JS8Call is licensed under GPLv3 and can be freely downloaded at (http://js8call.com). The ARSA committee is proud to present the 2021 Amateur Radio Software Award Certificate and an award grant of $300 to Jordan Sherer, the project owner and core contributor of the JS8Call application.
