SPECIAL EVENT. Look for special event station N3U/Flt93 (N3U/United Flight 93) to be activated once again between September 9-14th, to remind "Amateur Radio Operators World-Wide" of the tragic events that happened near Shanksville (Pa), New York City and Washington DC, on September 11th, 2001. This will be their 10th year for N3U and this memorial operation. Bob informs OPDX, "This year two Presidential Candidates (Trump & Biden) will both be attending and with COVID-19, it will not be as involved (or long) as previous years. We also had a lot of competition this year with the VHF contest on the same weekend and operators were scarce, but we should have enough to make a showing on most ham bands. As you know the band conditions are bad, BUT FT-8 seems to always save the day, so we will be using both FT-8 and FT-4. LoTW will also be used for logging all digital and most SSB and CW. Will also try to spot on DX Summit. PLEASE NOTE: When we 1st activated N3U in 2010, the grounds didn't look much different as on that fateful day in Sept 11, 2001. It took 10 years, but now it's transformed into a very beautiful national monument location. [ NPOTA FLT 93 NM07 ] N3U is sponsored by Club Station W3PN and thanks to ARRL we hold the special 1x1 license each year." The WA2NYC station will be on DSTAR XREF020B and Smart Group SEPT11 each evening from 7-11PM Eastern Time (2300-0300z). The log will be uploaded to LoTW. If you would like a QSL card, send a SASE to the club address (see QRZ.com) or by the Bureau. This operation is in memory of Robert Norton, K2IE/SK. SPECIAL EVENT (Highway to a DX Party!). The Citrus Belt Amateur Radio Club of San Bernardino (w6jbt.org), California, is once again hosting (probably one of the most fun special event activities) the 21st annual "Route 66 On The Air" special event between 0000z on Saturday, September 12th and 2359z on Sunday, September 20th. The purpose of this event is to offer amateur radio operators a fun way to "Relive the Ride" of their own memories of Route 66, and to celebrate the highway's 94th anniversary. The U.S. Highway 66 established in 1926, was the first major improved highway to link the west coast with the nation's heartland. Through stories, songs, and TV shows, the highway came to symbolize the spirit of the freedom of the open road, inspiring many to see America. JX0X JAN MAYEN ISLAND DXPEDITION NEWS (Update). The JX0X team announced this past week that they have two new operators -- Erwann/LB1QI and Allan/EA3HSO. They also reported with regret that Mats, RM2D, had to withdraw due to personal reasons. They currently have 5 operators, but will soon expand the team to 6 operators to complete the JX team. They feel with 6 operators, they will be able to have 4 stations running. The team continues to work hard on the vessel contract and is still negotiating the details. This contract is extremely important to them not only financially, but also logistically for a good outcome of their DXpedition. During last week, the team was able to have their permit to stay onshore Jan Mayen (with military permission) extended to 14 days between the period of mid-September and mid-October. The final dates within this period will be determined later knowing that weather plays a major factor. No DXpedition team nor boat has ever landed on Jan Mayen in the winter, and even very rarely in September. According to the author- ities, no team has ever be allowed to land on the island during the winter, which means that this is the only opportunity to do a low band DXpedition trip during this selected period. The JX0X team is very pleased with the support from all clubs and foundations with 19,000 USDs so far, they still have a long way to go for the needed funds. The success of this DXpedition will depend on the support they receive from the DX community. While many DXers have concerns related to COVID-19, there will be no DXpedition with- out support. In addition, If the trip is cancelled due to COVID-19, they will be contractually covered by this. The final decision to leave will depend on the level of support from the DX community. ANOTHER UPDATE AS OF SEPTEMBER 11TH. Reports from a few differnt sources (LA7GIA, FaceBook, LB1QI..etc) indicate that the JX0X DXpedition "maybe" in a difficult situation and "may" cancel due to the upcoming JX2US oper- ation (see above). Ken, LA7GIA, states that the team's main concern is the matter of if they will be able to raise the remaining funds and willing to sign an expensive vessel contract with all the added uncertainties. They need more time to sign the vessel contract while they carefully consider what to do. In the meantime, they encourage everyone who wants to have a good low band show next fall to support them upfront, and donate to their PayPal account (jx0x at la7gia.com). They offer 100% refund of all donations in case their DXpedition is canceled. They expect the final decision to take a few months and it is dependent on their financial situation. SILENT KEY. Martti, OH2BH, sent out the following press release on Sep- tember 11th (edited): OT VILHO VIRTANEN, OH3VV, 94, SILENT KEY -- LET'S PAY OUR RESPECTS TO THE MEMORY OF VILI, OH3VV, IN THE 62nd SCAN- DINAVIAN ACTIVITY CONTEST NEXT WEEK SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 1200 UTC, to September 20, 1200 UTC -- On September 9th, 2020, OT Vili, OH3VV, 94, left us and departed for better propagation regions, further up in the horizon! Vili was one of the most active and internationally known OH-hams in the 1960's through the Finn-Net operated by him and his late XYL, Irmeli, OH3TJ. Vili was involved in a vast variety of activities and all foreign hams visiting Finland experienced his hospitality and camaraderie. Villi was a true Ham - spelled with a capital H. Vili was a true DXer and contester in the terms' realest meaning - he had worked them all - Kosovo was his last one. He was also a contester who participated and won the very first SAC in 1958 (OH5QN), and still jumped into the 60th SAC last year, using a specially granted callsign, OH2A. See his interview after the 2019 SAC: https://www.sactest.net/blog/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/SAC-Booklet-2019.pdf Vili missed his 100th birthday by only some time, but his legacy will be with us forever. More details will follow about OT Vili, OH2TH/OH3VV, but those who knew him well will remember Vili in next week's SAC by the distinctive code VV. Come along and see the rules at: https://.sactest.net/blog/rules RIP OT Vili, OH3VV Martti, OH2BH and all of Vili's friends in Amateur Radio. ------------------------------------------------- An added tribute by Don, K8MFO, was also included in the press release: "Remembering Ville Virtanen - OH3VV, A Very Special Friend from the Distance" -- I first encountered Ville in 1983 when Dad - K8HHZ (also SK) and I were planning our very first trip to Finland. One of our mandated stops was to visit Ville and Irmeli - OH3TJ. This pattern was repeated in 1986 during our second trip to Finland. Every occasion with the Virtanens was fun and pleasant. Ville was a skilled and knowledgeable operator. When he decided to become active on 160 meters, he produced a quality signal. When a little imagination was required, Ville knew what to do. For the very first 4J1FS operation, Finland was in a difficult spot for propagation on 20 meters. So, Ville and some pals set up a station close to Finnish/Russian border and got a new one. A few people shook their heads, but the mission was accomplished. I will miss Ville. It was my pleasure to work Ville in the 2019 running of the SAC. This was our last QSO. But I will always have the fond memories of knowing a kind and thoughtful man, who knew what it took to work DX and contests. You do not replace men like that. Rest in Peace, Ville. Your friend, Don Karvonen - K8MFO, 10 September 2020 SPECIAL EVENT. Just a reminder that the 21st annual "Route 66 On The Air" special event (with 21 stations; two are rovers) continues until 2359z on Sunday, September 20th. For more details, see OPDX.1480.1 or the Web page: http://w6jbt.org TO0, ST. BARTHELEMY (Reminder). Operators Marco/FS4WBS, Claude/FS5GL and Franck/FG4ST are planning to be active as TO0Z (not FJ/FS4WBS and FJ/FS5GL as first reported) from Saint Barthelemy (NA-146) between September 14-17th. Activity will be on 40/20/17 meters using CW, SSB and FT8, with an IC-7300 into a multi-band dipoles and a CrankIR vertical. QSL via IZ1MHY or LoTW. VP8JP SOUTH ORKNEY ISLANDS (AN-008) DXPEDITION (Final Press Release, dated September 13th, 2020). We have closed the books on the VP8PJ DX- pedition to the South Orkney Islands. Due to the global pandemic our equipment was returned to California about two months later than planned. Nothing was missing or damaged during the extended journey. Thanks to the worldwide clubs/foundations, the DX community and our corporate sponsors, the project met all operational and financial goals. We appreciate the continued support from the DX community. Consistent with our commitment to upload the complete VP8PJ log to LoTW six months following the DX-pedition, Tim M0URX will upload the complete log on 15 September. Planning for our next project is underway. Exact timing will depend on lifting of the global travel restrictions, issuance of the landing permit and ship scheduling, early 2022 is the plan. Watch for press releases as this new project unfolds. 73, VP8PJ Leadership Team Website: https://sorkney.com/ Please direct your questions to: info at sorkney.com **** ADDED NOTE (By Editor): The Perseverance DX Group (PDXG) sent out an additional note to the club and foundation sponsors who donated funds to show how they spent their money, attached was a summary of the project. In the note it stated the following: Typical of any DXpedition to the Southern Ocean, the most expensive line items were the ship and freight, ~75% of the total cost. Overall, we were very happy with the outcome, both operationally and financially. We appreciate the support from the global DX community and the cor- porate sponsors. PDXG has begun planning for its next project, ZL9 - New Zealand Sub Antarctic Islands. We're currently working with the New Zealand author- ities for the landing permit and the ship owner. The global travel restrictions must be resolved before anything can happen, our plan is 1Q/2022..... Thanks again for the support.... 73, Gene K5GS VP9, BERMUDA. Jeff, N1SNB, will once again be active as VP9/N1SNB from Bermuda (NA-005) between October 21-26th (pending travel restrictions). Activity will be on various HF bands, but focused on the CQWW DX SSB Contest (October 24-25th) as a Single-Op/All-Band/Low-Power entry. QSL via his home callsign. "Fast" QSL is a special designed postcard with a real 1987 year photograph of Preobrazheniya polar meteorological station (18 km from Bolshoy Begichev Island) stamped by two stamps. The first one is the original 1987 year stamp found at Preobrazheniya station (closed in 1990 and abandoned). The second is a modern copy of this stamp made for our 2021 expedition. The cost of a QSL is 30 USDs. It can be paid via PayPal. Links are at (www.qrz.com/db/ri0q) Those who wish to receive this exclusive card must order it prior to the expedition start. All others will receive traditional confirmation (OQRS, LoTW, ClubLog). IOTA credit via ?lublog will be opened in 6 months after the end of the expedition. ---------------------------------------- EDITOR'S NOTES: Members of the Arctic Legends team (RT9K) are planning to activate the Island of Big Begichev (Bol?shoy Begichev) sometime in early 2021.
