"It is with a heavy heart that we for various reasons hereby cancel the JX0X Dxped. While we worked hard for 18 months to secure the entry permit, the permit to stay onshore, the fundraising and the logistics - we have come to the conclusion that there are too many uncertainties involved in this project. There is not a single reason that we cancel but rather several reasons right up to today that altogether makes this a difficult project to complete. We would like to thank everybody who donated upfront to the JX0X DXpedition, and who believed in our team and our project. You all made a contribution to have the opportunity to work us guys next year, and you all made a difference no matter what you donated. It is people like you who donated upfront that makes DXing happen. Without upfront donations we will see less tent and generator DXpeditions to expensive places. I will ship more on November 23rd. We all know that due to the COVID-19 situation, physical mail is delayed around the world, if you need my QSL I recommend using the ClubLog's OQRS service, you will get my card faster. I made the decision not to send my QSLs again through any Bureau service such as the ARRL or the URE. I will only upload my QSOs to the LoTW system and to the Clublog, I do not use the systems like eQSL or QRZ to confirm QSOs. Please tell me when you receive my QSL via e-mail or Twitter." STANDARD TIME. Did you remember to change your clocks? Countries who observe Daylight Saving Time (DST), which took place on Sunday, March 10th, are now expected to move their "local clocks" backward 1 hour on Sunday, November 1st, from 2:00 AM local time to 1:00 AM. In 2021, Day- light Saving Time (DST) will again go into effect on Sunday, March 14th, at 2:00 AM local time. For the history and details about ST and DST, as well as an interesting map of the world (showing the countries who observe DST), see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standard_time http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daylight_saving_time http://www.timeanddate.com/time/dst/2021.html https://www.timeanddate.com/time/change/usa?year=2021 ADDED NOTE: Hopefully, all amateur radio operators know NOT to change their GMT/UTC/ZULU clocks. However, since most operators usually set their computers to local time, some may have to change their settings on "some" ham radio software (ex. logging, propagation, DXTelnet, etc..) programs. The following was posted on the Rebel DX Group's FaceBook page on November 3rd [edited]: (https://www.facebook.com/rebeldxgroup): Hi Rebel folks, We are still pushing with the missing budget (24300 USDs) to finalize last payment for the vessel to make 3Y0I happen. So far (as an inter- national team) we still can't travel to South Africa due the Covid situation. Bouvet is not cancelled! All our equipment is ready there, waiting for us. Time is running like crazy, also Antarctic summer will not wait for us so long. Please keep in mind that we will maybe need to reschedule this trip for the next season. In the meantime Dom, 3Z9DX, received his Fijian government travel permit to go back to the Pacific Rebel Base as a back up plan. There is three different DXCC's around: 3D2/C Conway, 3D2/R Rotuma, 3D2 Fiji + several IOTAs including some very rare groups. Operators from the Russian Robinson Club (RRC), who were expected to be active now as 7Q7RU near Embangweni, Malawi, are currently stuck in Nairobi, Kenya (since the 5th), and are having some visa issues. They may be there for a few more days until they resolve this issue (they will know more Monday). In the meantime, they may try to hastily arrange a temporary 5Z4/ license. If the team finally goes to Malawi, activity will be on 160/80/60/40/ 30/20/17/15/12/10/6/2 meters (with a focus on 160/80m) and 70cm using CW, SSB, FT8 (F/H mode) and Satellites. QSL via R7AL, LoTW or ClubLog's OQRS. For more details and updates, see: https://dxpedition.wixsite.com/7q7ru LAST MINUTE UPDATE (November 8th): Two operators of the 7Q7RU team now have visas. Others are expected, perhaps even today. There's basically no air tickets to Malawi. None at all. Land borders are closed. The next flight will be on Friday the 13th. Four return tickets were purchased. However, a fifth ticket was purchased for one team member for tomorrow evening, November 9th. The ticket is expensive with a difficult route hrough Tanzania, leaving the transit zone and claiming luggage. So, all is going well, 7Q7RU could be on the air perhaps as early as November 10th. ADDED NOTES (Reminder/Update): The RRC team announced this past week, the "MALAWI 2020 7Q7RU" plaque. This plaque is issued for contacts with the Russian Team 7Q7RU. To get this plaque you need to work 3 QSOs with 7Q7RU between November 7-19th, 2020. Plaque's size 200 ? 250mm. Plaque's fee 44 USDs or 39 EURs. Payment is via PayPal (VershkovKN at gmail.com). The fee includes shipping by air mail. The RRC team also announced the "7Q7RU Band-Slot Challenge". The purpose of this competition is working 7Q7RU on as many different bands and modes as possible based on ClubLog scores. TOP TEN stations will win a special plaque sponsored by team members and shipped from Russia worldwide. The top 10 radio operators that fulfill the plaque's requirements first, will receive a special plaque free of charge starting with number 001 to 010. All logs for checking will be uploaded to ClubLog service. Questions and/or applications free form should be sent to RW3DD (VershkovKN at gmail.com). The following has been posted via several different sources [edited]: A few weeks ago, VOACAP Online for Ham Radio, (https://www.voacap.com/hf/), was moved to a new web platform, and this change forced me to re-factor the majority of the code in the back-end. I have now completed this task, and continuously fine-tuning it, but I am pleased to inform that the coverage area maps and point-to-point prediction graphs are now much cleaner & neater than before, using a different mapping library. In addition, most of the code base has been optimized and hopefully is more robust than ever. Especially the Propagation Planner, the propagation planning tool for HF contests (e.g. CQWW) & DXpeditions, should now be faster and also, as a bonus, offers the predicted values as CSV files for a more detailed analysis. All the same changes have also been implemented on the site of the VOACAP DX Charts, (https://www.voacap.com/dx/). VOACAP Online for Ham Radio is a free HF propagation prediction service for the global ham community, running for more than ten years now, with integrations to the DX Summit and Club Log sites, for example. No regis- tration required, no tracking on the site by Google Analytics, no ads on the pages, and no subscription fee for the service. Follow and subscribe to the latest VOACAP developments on Twitter, (https://twitter.com/VOACAP/). YB0, INDONESIA. According to CQ WPX Contest Directors Bud Trench, AA3B (SSB and CW), and Ed Muns, W0YK (RTTY), the new category will permit up to six separate stations in different locations (but all within the same DX entity and CQ zone) to operate as a single contest entry. This was inspired by innovations being made in response to the Coronavirus pandemic, but Trench and Muns say the new category will be permanent. In addition, QSO alerting assistance will now be permitted in all single-operator categories except for the "Classic" categories. This means that there will no longer be separate listings or recognition for "Assisted" vs. "Unassisted" categories, and all Classic overlay entries must be unassisted. Finally, Classic overlay stations will now have a maximum operating time in each contest of 24 hours rather than the previous 36. The rule changes take effect with the 2021 running of the WPX contests - RTTY on February 13-14, SSB on March 27-28 and CW on May 29-30. Complete details will be posted with the full rules on both the CQ website (www.cq-amateur-radio.com) and the WPX contest sites at (www.cqwpx.com) and (www.cqwpxrtty.com). ---------------------------------------- * Volunteers Needed for Propagation Research Project -- From our friends at HamSCI... HamSCI (www.hamsci.org) is looking for amateur radio operators around the world to help collect propagation data during the December 14 eclipse across South America. Data collection requires an HF radio connected to a computer. There will be 24-hour practice runs on November 21st and December 5th. The main data recording will run from December 9-16th, to ensure an abundance of control data. Details of the experiment may be found here: https://hamsci.org/december-2020-eclipse-festival-frequency-measurement Instructions are also available in Spanish and Portuguese. Interested operators should sign up at this link (https://forms.gle/C9PFSTeLf7xvCQDYA) or directly contact Kristina Collins at kd8oxt at case.edu. -------------------------------------------------- D6, COMOROS (Update). Don, K6ZO/7Q6M (ex-D68GA), is now active as D60AB from Comoro Islands (AF-007) as of November 17th. He has permission to be active on 160/40/20/17/15/12/10 meters. He has been spotted on 40/20/ 17/15 meters CW after 1700z and again after 2300z. Length of his stay possibly ends November 24th. He will head back to Malawi on the 26th to join the 7Q7WW team (Don/N6ZO and Junior/7Q7JN) for the CQWW DX CW Contest (November 28-29th), and then return to Washington D.C. on December 5th. GUIDELINES FOR OPERATING A MULTI-STATION SPECIAL EVENT (By Dr. Michael K. Gauthier, K6ICS - K6ICS at arrl.net)..... Introduction -- It's always fun to work a special event where there is more than one callsign, or the same callsign on several bands, required to receive an award. For the award seeker, this brings out the excitement of the chase. But many times, this excitement turns to frustration and disgust when it is found that all the required contacts are not reasonably available or even worse, they are not even on the air. Having been a ham since 1954, I have participated in many special events as both the award seeker and as the event operator. I have seen these problems too many times. Fighting unexpected mishaps, band conditions, QSB, QRN, and QRM is normal. Not having the special event stations working at their best is tragic. The Problem -- As an example of the problem, there are 5 stations to contact, over a 10-day period. You have worked 3 and realize that the other 2 you have not heard. Checking DX Summit and other spotting web sites you find that the 4th station you need has been on 160 meter SSB and 80 meter FT8 for about 4 hours over the past 4-days. When you check out the 5th station, you find no record of them even being on the air. RATS! That makes you feel good. What a waste of time. Pre-Event Analysis -- * Do you have an event e-mail contact? Review e-mails several times a day, minimum. * Do you have a website? Does it contain ALL special event information? * Review the rules and regulations of your event and award(s). * What is the time period over which the special event will take place? Does it conflict with other events? * Planning the bands, modes, and times which will be best for the maximum number of contestants. * When event stations operators can only operate limited times or bands. Add additional station(s) to cover open bands, modes, and times. * Do you have backup operators? * Emergencies: Power failures, equipment failures, operator illness, and other problems. * After the event starts you need to fine tune your analysis, based on current operating conditions. * Post-event QSLs and Award Certificates. Logging and reporting contacts. QSLs, Awards processing, and Delivery. "Not in Log" and other problems. Recommendations -- * Use the "most active" bands: 80 Night, 40 Night/Day, 20 Day. Other bands as open. * Multiple stations using the same call on different bands and modes, at the same time. * Use all bands/modes, unless it is a single band/mode event. * Publish typical operating schedule so the stations can be more easily found. * Suggest award seekers list contacts on DX Summit and other spotting sites. * Process all QSLs and award certificates rapidly. * KISS - Keep it Simple Stupid. Notes -- Be aware of band limits for all operators. Novices and Technicians are limited to CW only on a portion of 80, 40, and 15 meters. On 10 meters they do have CW, Digital, and SSB, but only a small portion of the band. General and Advanced classes have their own operating limits. Other countries have their own band limits. ------------------------------------------------------------- HS, THAILAND (SAT Op). The Thailand's Amateur Radio Satellite group (AMSAT-HS) has requested permission to establish a temporary station (DX portable) with the northern office of the NBTC, Thailand's regulator, in Chiang Mai and Mae Hong Son (grid NK99) provinces in the north part of Thailand during the period from November 26-28th, 2020, to communicate via all LEO and MEO amateur radio satellites (including QO-100 NB) that pass over Thailand using the callsign HS0AJ/P of the Radio Amateur Society of Thailand under the Royal Patronage of His Majesty the King. Operators Kob/E21EJC and Tanan/HS1JAN state [edited], "Hence we would like to notify all radio amateurs who would be interested in contacting stations in Thailand on its northern border of this activity. Even if the angle is as low as 0 degrees please try to contact us. We hope to meet you on all satellites frequency then." IOTA NEWS. He is there working for the World Food Program (WFP). QSL via his home callsign or LoTW. He posted the following on QRZ.com about his low band activity this past week on Novem- ber 20th: Unfortunately, I have to report that the QRM from many different sources at my QTH now makes 160m operation next to impossible. While it was already very bad during the last season, it has now gone beyond repair. I have installed 3 different RX systems, to no avail. The last nail in the coffin was the installation of an array of large LED flood lights. The whole spectrum is affected, but 160 at the bottom and 10 & 6m at the other end, are worst off. I will continue trying, although I'm afraid the best times for these bands, for as much as they were, are gone. TF, ICELAND. Siggi, TF3CW, will be active as TF3W Single-Op/Single-Band (20m) entry. YASME NEWS (Press Release, dated November 19th)[edited]. YASME FOUNDATION EXCELLENCE AWARDS -- The Yasme Excellence Award is presented to individuals and groups who, through their own service, creativity, effort and dedica- tion, have made a significant contribution to amateur radio. The contri- bution may be in recognition of technical, operating or organizational achievement, as all three are necessary for amateur radio to grow and prosper. The Yasme Excellence Award is in the form of a cash grant and an individually-engraved crystal globe. The Board of Directors of The Yasme Foundation is pleased to announce the latest recipients of the Yasme Excellence Award: * Brett Ruiz (PJ2BR) and Helena Ruiz (PJ2ZZ) -- Brett and Helena have been active leaders of VERONA for more than twenty years, including technical activities, disaster preparedness and relief, as well as training potential licensees. They act as liaisons to government and international organizations, as well as contributing to important events such as GAREC and IARU assemblies and meetings. Brett is also active in pursuing long-distance VHF propagation and digital communi- cations. * Bob Wilson (N6TV) -- Yasme recognizes Bob's technical support to literally hundreds of hams through various radio manufacturer's user groups, to logging software communities, and the detailed assistance he provides to Reverse Beacon Network hosts, keeping their equipment configured and running. Bob also provides invaluable support to traveling hams worldwide when they most need help. Along with being technically talented he is exceptionally selfless in using that talent to help others, quick to encourage others in many areas. * Jari Perki?m?ki (OH6BG) -- Jari has supported the online VOACAP soft- ware and website, www.voacap.com, for almost 20 years, without compen- sation, making world-class HF propagation prediction and modeling services available to any radio amateur. He believes in team work, acknowledging the contributions and ideas from all of the ham com- munity for further development of the service, but especially from James Watson, M0DNS/HZ1JW, and Juho Juopperi, OH8GLV. He estimates that today VOACAP Online serves thousands of users, with visits from more than 100 countries every month, including integration with the DX Summit and Club Log services. He is part of the Radio Arcala, OH8X team and acts as a propagation specialist, assisting the WRTC community, RSGB and others. * Jim Brown (K9YC) -- Amateurs worldwide have benefited from his exten- sive contributions to amateur radio regarding ferrite materials and their use in combating RF interference, feed line applications, and transformers. His efforts to improve transmitter performance and operating practices are also greatly appreciated, as are the exten- sive set of personal publications available to the public and per- forming reviews of technical material for amateur radio publishers. * * * * * The Yasme Foundation is a not-for-profit corporation organized to support scientific and educational projects related to amateur radio, including DXing (long distance communication) and the introduction and promotion of amateur radio in developing countries. Niko, OH2GEK, will pilot the Radio Arcala Atlantic outpost remotely in the CQWW CW on 15M mono-band. While taking full advantage of the favorable footprint of the most western point of Europe, he will also once more try to find the right mixture of ways to reduce the Flex Radio internal latency and make operating comfortable. The painful CQWW SSB experience may result in the station not using the control panel (Maestro) at all because of the added latency of some 500ms. https://www.3830scores.com/showrumor.php?arg=T7arzKqcqiamR Watch for CR2X operating procedures and please report back in case of any inconsistency. SOLAR CYCLE 25 (Sudden Increase, As We Approach the CQWW CW DX Contest). Frank, W3LPL, posted the following (on November 26th) for the contesters on some interesting details about Solar Cycle 25 [edited]: Sunspot activity has increased dramatically over the last two months. Most days this month have had multiple and more active sunspots resulting in the solar flux index exceeding 100 for the first time since September 2017. SFI is likely to remain above 100 during the CQWW CW DX Contest and remain at 90 or above for at least another week. But recall that both the sunspot number and the 2800 MHz solar flux index are proxies for the the actual source of F layer ionization that cannot be observed on the surface of the Earth: extreme ultraviolet radiation We can't yet determine if this is a short term surge or a sustained increase in sunspot activity. We'll have a better understanding in about six months. The first year of increased sunspot activity is a sweet spot in the solar cycle because: - increased extreme ultraviolet radiation starts to open the 10 meter band, makes 15 meters more reliable including more frequent JA and long path openings keeps 20 meters open later into the night and opens it well before sunrise keeps the MUF into Europe above 7 MHz during most or all of the night - coronal hole high speed streams that cause elevated K indices during the declining years of the solar cycle and during solar minimum are now less frequent and not as strong, keeping the K index consistently low for about the next year. - fast coronal mass ejections (fast CMEs) that cause much more severe and more frequent geomagnetic disturbances won't start to occur regularly until at least late next year. - daytime D layer absorption that affects 160 and 80 meters much more severely than 40 meters hasn't yet begun to increase significantly as it will when we get closer to solar maximum - E layer ionization (not sporadic-E -- that's completely different) hasn't yet begun to increase significantly. As we get closer to solar maximum consistently higher E-layer MUFs will blanket 40 meter DX openings until later in the afternoon. Enjoy the ride especially this weekend in the CQWW CW DX Contest... 73 , Frank W3LPL SI9, SWEDEN. Pete, MM0TWX, Founder and CEO of the True Blue DXers Club (TBDXC), sent out the following press release on November 23rd [edited]: "300 pre-registered with six weeks to go" -- Dear fellow DXers, We want to wholeheartedly thank all those who have pre-registered for the 2021 Ultra-Marathon "Bands Alive" organized by the True Blue DXers Club. The level of interest and enthusiasm for this initiative is very high - so many have written saying that they find the format exciting and they cannot wait for the start of the operations on January 1st, 2021. Also, the Sun seems to be gracing us with a very good start of cycle 25, and this bodes extremely well for good levels of activity next year. Although having very nearly 300 people already pre-registered for this event is a major success, we think we all can do even better! I would like to appeal again to all of you to do what you can to raise the profile of this event even further. Talk to your friends, talk to your local Club, write to the DX editor of your national Ham Radio magazine, write a post on a discussion forum - any of these simple actions can result in more people participating. And remember: more people = more fun = bands more alive than ever! All you have to do is to point people to (www.tbdxc.net/marathon), where they will find all the information they need. I also wanted to give you feedback on a promise I had made in my first email. I did indeed contact about a dozen manufacturers of radio- related products and accessories, asking for a sponsorship, in the form of a product or a discount voucher, for a prize to go to the winners of the CW and SSB categories. 9 of these had the courtesy of replying, wishing us luck with the initiative, but saying that - owing to the difficult economic situation - they cannot afford a sponsorship at the moment. At least they responded, which I really appreciated and is more than many would have done... I still hope to be able to motivate poten- tial sponsors to contribute next year, especially if we can show partic- ipation numbers in the high hundreds. Meanwhile, everybody please stay safe, enjoy DXing and stay tuned for the next and last Marathon update before we actually begin. And don't forget to do your part for promotion! :-) .... 73 to all, Pete, MM0TWX, TBDXC Founder and CEO XR50, CHILE (Special Event). Members of the Chilean Pacific DX Group are now active as XR50BA until November 30th. Activity is to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the "Escuadrilla de Paracaidismo Boinas Azules" of the Chilean Air Force (FACH). Activity will be on all HF bands with a focus on FT8. QSL via direct (see QRZ.com), LoTW or eQSL. SWLs reports are welcome. YI9, IRAQ (Updates). OPDX received the following from Paolo, IK5SRF, to provide some updates on behalf of Giorgio, IU5HWS, who is operating from Iraq. Giorgio is still active and the good news is that he finally received his official license from the local authorities. Start looking for Giorgio to be signing as YI9WS (as of November 25th). Paolo has provided the following important points [edited]: * All the previous QSOs made by Giorgio, as YI9/IU5HWS, will be confirmed via mail. * Paolo is working with Giorgio to apply for a YI9WS account on LoTW. So all QSOs made starting November 25th will be confirmed this way also. * Remember, Giorgio is there on duty. Activity will be on a regular bases, but always on his spare time. Please follow what Giorgio asks for, especially when he is trying to call "outside EU". * For special needs and sked, stations outside EU can ask and send an E-mail to IK5SRF (listed on his QRZ.com Web page). They are focused to help stations that need YI. * Remember he is working with a simple dipole and mainly on 15/17/20/ 40/80 meters band. No CW activity is planned so far. Over the last two days, Giorgio has been on 80/40/17/15 meters SSB. Hours of activity have been between (+/-) 0815-0930z (17m), 1100-1200z (15m) and 1805-1840z (80m) and 2040-2122z (40m). ZF, CAYMAN ISLANDS. Dan, N6MJ, will once again be active as ZF1A from Grand Cayman Islands (NA-016) during the CQWW DX CW Contest (November 28-29th) as a Single-Op/All-Band/High-Power entry.
