LATEST ONES IN THE STAYHOME FAMILY News from Bangkok, Thailand and the world It was today when the Thai radio regulator, NBTC, granted a permit E2STAYHOME for Thailand to join the the COVID-19 movement as the country number 33. RAST president, Jack, HS1FVL was on 20M to kick-off the special event while Champ, E21EIC with his wife JC, E20NKB handed out the very first QSOs. On the same day, Andy, 5Z/G3AB informed that their regulator was in the process for allowing the locals to air the 5Z4STAYHOME special event station which would bring Africa to join the movement, enhancing the messages that governments throughout the world are releasing to their citizens. Amateur radio is not only promoting the good-will and sense of belonging during these hard times but also keeping its communication network available for this unfortunate period. The Rebel DX Group reports on FaceBook (https://www.facebook.com/rebeldxgroup): Unfortunately, our plans regarding activating Banaba Island and Tuvalu has been affected by the current COVID-19 situation - just like in case of many other DXpeditions around the world. We're forced to postpone the DXpedition, but it's not canceled. No worries! We'll resume our plans once the island would become accessible again. Meanwhile, we keep an eye on any possibilities to continue our plans in terms of activation Bouvet Island at the end of this year. Surprisingly, the long wait until the end of 2020 may not affect our plans at all and we'll be able to continue with our initial 3Y0I plans without any disruption. We still miss a portion of our necessary budget to activate Bouvet. Just like in case of many other top-most-wanted-DXCC DXpeditions, it can't happen without your support. We kindly ask for any possible donations via our GFM page at: https://www.gofundme.com/f/3y0i-bouvet-island-expedition Don't forget to add your callsign in the donation form. Once donated, your callsign would automatically be listed in the donors' list there. 5C1, MOROCCO (Special Event). Gene, K5GS, reports: The VP8PJ cards are printed and were shipped from ON5UR QSL Print Services in Belgium to Tim, M0URX, in the UK. Tim has the tracking numbers and after customs processing expects the cards to be delivered soon. The envelopes, labels and pre- printed postage are prepared and awaiting the cards. Once in hand the "stuffing" process will begin. Until the Covid-19 lock down in the UK is lifted Tim will probably have to do this work alone, it will take longer than usual to complete. The initial mailing will include all the VP8PJ confirmation requests in the system through the mailing date. Announcing: 2020 Inductees, CQ Contest Hall of Fame -- CQ magazine today announced the induction of three new members to the CQ Contest Hall of Fame, which honors those contesters who not only excel in personal performance but who also "give back" to the hobby in outstanding ways. CQ Contesting Editor David Siddall, K3ZJ, conducted a virtual induction ceremony at the conclusion of the daylong 2020 Contest University webinar. The 2020 inductees to the CQ Contest Hall of Fame are: * Geoffrey Howard, W0CG/PJ2DX, who purchased and restored the PJ9JT contest station in 2000 that had been owned by CQ Contest Hall of Famer John Thompson, W1BIH/PJ9JT. The location was named "Signal Point" and the PJ2T callsign pays homage to PJ9JT. Geoff established the Caribbean Contest Consortium to help manage and maintain the station, and has consistently made the station available to guest operators over the years, including serving as host station several times for young oper- ators participating in the Dave Kalter Youth DX Adventure program. He has also worked closely with VERONA, Curacao's national ham radio society. Geoff served for more than 25 years in the United States Air Force, retiring as a colonel; worked for RCA and the Federal Aviation Administration, and taught in the Graduate School of Management at Kent State University in Ohio. * Willard "Bill" Myers, K1GQ, a pioneer of computer-based systems for designing and switching antennas at contest stations, designed the Cushcraft "Skywalker" series of monoband Yagis, helped build the early PacketCluster network and served as mentor to several of today's most prominent contesters, including K1AR, K1DG, K1JX, and others. Bill was also a major behind-the-scenes force at the 2014 World Radiosport Team Championship (WRTC) competition in Massachusetts, and is currently providing support and refinement of the SkookumLogger contest logging program for Apple computers. * Gene Zimmerman, W3ZZ (SK), was a major force in VHF contesting as well as an accomplished HF contester. He was a member of both ARRL's and CQ's contest committees at various times between 1972 and 2012, was QST magazine's VHF Editor for nearly a decade, and was CQ Contest magazine's VHF columnist as well. Gene took over the struggling CQ World Wide VHF Contest in 1999, reinvented it as a 6- and 2-meter only event and sparked its growth into a truly worldwide competition. He was also instrumental in organizing the mid-Atlantic VHF contesting group that became known as the K8GP Grid Pirates. Registered participants in the virtual Contest University webinar were able to view the induction ceremony live. It was also "simulcast" on DX Engineering's YouTube link, where it is also stored for later viewing. The recording of the ceremony may be accessed at: http://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4V4B_mr1mYF5ycGQe_4Ytw The CQ Contest Hall of Fame was established in 1986 to recognize those amateurs who have made major contributions to the art of radio con- testing. This is the 37th annual induction and the first to be con- ducted online. CQ COMMUNICATIONS, INC. NEWS (Press Release by Rich, W2VU, dated May 15th). STAYHOME CAMPAIGN REACHES ITS PINNACLE, JUNE 6-7th (Press Release dated May 16th, by Martti, OH2BH) [edited]. CONTEST-LIKE ACTIVITY FROM SATURDAY, 1200 UTC to SUNDAY, 1159 UTC -- PRINT RULES HERE: https://tinyurl.com/ybwctxok In total, more than 30 countries have activated STAYHOME-suffixed stations to amplify the important message and participate in a large international showcase of Amateur Radio during the COVID-19 crisis. It is estimated that some 150,000 messages have been passed through the network around the world. Oms, PY5EG, one of the project participants, alone, has completed more than 20,000 messages to 181 countries and to all 40 zones. Congratulations! The latest United Nations activation is; 4U9STAYHOME by Ivo, 9A3A, from the UN base in Brindisi, Italy. The highlight of the event is a June 6-7th, 24-hour radio gathering, when all STAYHOME stations and the world will gather on the airwaves to wish each other well and conduct a global message passing in a contest- like framework. At that point the further validity of the STAYHOME message will be reviewed with the sincere hope that all countries would be able to begin easing these heavy restrictions, eventually making this message obsolete. The project patron is the Foreign Minister of Finland, Pekka Haavisto and it is endorsed by IARU President Tim Ellam, VE6SH, and the United Nations ARC with multiple STAYHOME activations. See the project specifics at the QRZ.com at: https://www.qrz.com/db/OH2STAYHOME SPECIAL STAY AT HOME STATIONS/ACTIVITIES (Updated/Corrections). Many more special event stations have hit the airwaves (or soon will be) to promote individuals to "STAY-AT-HOME" and raise awareness for the restrictions necessary to fight the spread the coronavirus. [edited] Announcing: 2020 Inductees, CQ DX Hall of Fame -- Tony Gonzalez, EA5RM, and Ned Stearns, AA7A, Inducted to CQ DX Hall of Fame - CQ magazine today announced the induction of the two newest members of the CQ DX Hall of Fame, which honors those DXers who not only excel in personal performance but who also "give back" to the hobby in outstanding ways. CQ DX Editor Bob Schenck, N2OO, made a virtual presentation on the Ham Nation podcast on May 20th. The 2020 inductees to the CQ DX Hall of Fame are: * Tony Gonzalez, EA5RM - has been an active DXpeditioner for 20 years, often organizing and leading teams to operate from difficult and chal- lenging locations. Tony and his teams have also helped establish or re-establish amateur radio activities in several countries, including Rwanda (where it had been banned for a decade due to civil war) and the newly-independent country of South Sudan. In addition, Tony has made 10 trips to Bolivia to establish and maintain HF communication links between medical facilities and remote villages in the Amazon rain forest, and has operated as CP1XRM during his free time. Tony's work in South America earned him the ARRL International Humanitarian Award in 2015. * Edward "Ned" Stearns, AA7A - is an accomplished DXer, DXpeditioner (he's been on 32 of them and led 8) and technical innovator. He in- troduced the use of switchable vertical dipole array antennas on island DXpeditions and designed "dual-band discone" antennas for use with the Northern California DX Foundation's worldwide beacon network. Ned also worked with 2019 DX Hall of Fame inductee Joe Taylor, K1JT, on developing the "Fox/Hound" mode for FT8 used by DXpeditions. Ned also maintains two remote stations in Arizona, has made presentations at many technical conferences and has served in a variety of leadership roles in the hobby. On the air, he is at the Top of the Honor Roll for DXCC Phone and Mixed, was the first recipient of 11-band DXCC and has worked over 160 countries via EME (Earth-Moon-Earth). This year's induction ceremony was scheduled to be conducted online on Wednesday, May 20th, on the Ham Nation podcast: https://twit.tv/shows/ham-nation The CQ DX Hall of Fame was established in 1967 to recognize those amateurs who have made major contributions to DXing and DXpeditioning. This is the 54th annual induction, and the first to be conducted online. EDITOR'S NOTE: To watch the actual "CQ DX Hall of Fame" announcement on the HAM NATION (episode 454; 40 mins. in), go to: https://twit.tv/shows/ham-nation/episodes/454?autostart=false E2, THAILAND (Attention AMSAT Members -- E2STAYHOME operating schedule). Tanan, HS1JAN, posted the following info on May 24th: Thailand's regulator, the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC), has issued the special callsign, E2STAYHOME, to the Radio Amateur Society of Thailand under the Royal Patronage of His Majesty the King (RAST) for use during the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus. This is because it is very important for people to boost their immune systems to fight off germs that can enter their bodies and to reduce the chance of getting infected by the COVID-19 virus. Now, it is very important to stay home and to keep a distance of at least one metre from others, if this is possible, which is one way to help prevent the spread of the disease on a global basis. This is a rare opportunity for ham radio operators who are interested in satellite communications to legally communicate with Thai amateur radio stations by means of the Es'hail-2 or QO-100 geostationary satellite which licensed by the Thai regulator, the NBTC, in response to requests from RAST, and using the special callsign E2STAYHOME on the evenings of each working day in Thailand and on every weekend. The operating schedule is as follows: Monday to Friday, 1100 - 1500 UTC Saturday and Sunday, 0800 - 1500 UTC All days after 1600 UTC and up to 2200 UTC Thailand has an emergency curfew in place. please STAY HOME!! During these times, Thai hams will be operating using this callsign on all bands and in all modes, including all satellite modes under the super- vision of the Radio Amateur Society of Thailand (RAST) in an effort to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 and they will be QRV from today until July 15, 2020. QSOs with E2STAYHOME can be confirmed via Tim W. Tadsri, HS6MYW, and QSL cards will be sent to all via the Bureau. EH8, CANARY ISLANDS (Special Event). Members of the Radio Club Laurilsiva (EA8RKL) from Gran Canaria (AF-004) will be active as EH8DDC between May 24-31st. Activity is to celebrate the feast day of the Autonomous Community of Canaria. Operations will be on all possible bands and modes. Participants who manage to make four contacts without repeating bands and modes on the same day will receive a digital Diploma. The lists (log) must be sent before June 15th, and E-mail to: listasea8rkl at gmail.com (stating their callsign, name and surname). QSL via ClubLog or eQSL. F6, FRANCE. QSL via LoTW, by the Bureau, or direct to Christian/F5GSJ (see QRZ.com). If you use the Bureau, please only via REF Bureau (the French IARU Society and the only one). FP, ST. This oper- ation was originally scheduled for July, but was postponed due to travel restrictions. It will be Eric's 14th trip to the island. Activity will be on 160-10 meters, including 60m , using CW, SSB, RTTY, FT8/FT4 (but pri- marily SSB, RTTY and FT8/FT4) and the SSB/FM satellites. He will generally be on the highest frequency band that is open (favoring 60/12/10/6m). He will be active in the CQWW DX RTTY Contest (September 26-27th). ADDED NOTE: Eric will usually try to be on as many Satellite passes as he can when the WX is good, generally favoring theXW-2x, AO-7, RS-44, CA-4x, and possibly the FM birds. Roger, G3KMA, announced the following on the IOTA Web page, May 19th [edited]: Islands On The Air (IOTA) Ltd is delighted to announce the implementation of the ARRL application which allows the use of QSO matching via LoTW. We wish to thank ARRL for having made their application available. This will allow IOTA chasers to obtain credits by matching their logs with those at LoTW in addition to those at Club Log. We have a lot of work ahead of us to identify the time windows of past IOTA operations and this will be phased in over the next few months. An initial list of operations arising from the link-up with LoTW has been added to the database and these will become available for QSO matching from Thursday, May 21st. Further additions will be made on an ongoing basis. We are sure that the IOTA community will welcome this development for which they have long been pressing. Instructions for LoTW QSO matching are found here, and notes on Accepted Activations here (https://www.iota-world.org/info/accepted_activations-en.pdf). NA-039. (Rescheduled) Members of the Russian Robinson Club will be active as KL7RRC/P from Adak Island, Alaska, between September 11-18th (originally scheduled for June). Operators mentioned are Yuri/N3QQ, Robert/N7QT, Slav/OK8AU and Yuri/UA9OBA. Activity will be on various HF bands using CW, SSB and FT8 (F/H), with three stations on the air. QSL via N7RO. NA-070. (Rescheduled) Members of the Russian Robinson Club will be active as KL7RRC/P from Kiska Island, Alaska, between September 5-10th (originally scheduled for June). Operators mentioned are Yuri/N3QQ, Robert/N7QT, Slav/OK8AU and Yuri/UA9OBA. Activity will be on various HF bands using CW, SSB and FT8 (F/H), with three stations on the air. QSL via N7RO. NA-085. Bruce, K5TEN, who usually activates Dog Island (WW. Loc EL79) every year in June as K4D, has postponed his operation until September 9-18th. Dog Island, Florida, is an extremely rare IOTA because access is controlled by the 25 or so homeowners on the island. There are no hams on the island, and the only activations have been done by Bruce over the last 6 years. Access is by permission only and permission by one of the homeowners. It is only accessible by private charter or single engine fixed wing aircraft. The airstrip is overgrown so private charter is the only real choice. There are no streets, roads, stop signs, trendy cafes, or beach-front bars. If you need it, you bring it. This year's activity will only be on 40 and 20 meters primarily on SSB and FT8 Digital mode using 100 watts an ICOM 7100 into an off center fed dipole. QSL via K5TEN, SASE REQUIRED for stateside and DX (DX 2 USDs REQUIRED). Also, QSL via LoTW, eQSL and ClubLog. NA-158. Bryden, KC1KUG, will be active as KL7/KC1KUG from Fire Island, Alaska, in the Cook Inlet Group, between June 2-27th. Activity will be mostly on 40/20 meters, possibly 80/30/17m, using mostly SSB, some CW or FT8. QSL via KC1KUG. PLEASE NOTE: Since the Webmasters of the new have decided NOT to post or dedicate a Web page to announce upcoming IOTA operations, PLEASE send your IOTA operations information to the OPDX, and we will post it here in an upcoming bulletin...... Rolandas, LY5AA, will be active as LY88A from Kaunas during the CQWW WPX CW Contest (May 30-31st) as a Single-Op/Single-Band (160m)/High-Power entry. SABLE ISLAND DXPEDITION NEWS (October 17-26th). Randy, N0TG, reports [edited]: "Many have asked about the impact COVID-19 could have to the Sable Island Dxpedition scheduled for October. We are routinely in contact with Parks Canada and cautiously optimistic for October at this time. Certainly, matters can change quickly. However, if the DXpedition schedule is delayed due to COVID-19 regu- lations, we have been assured by Parks Canada that they will work with us to reschedule the DXpedition. The team has been polled, and all agree that they will be able to comply to revised dates. Currently the border between Canada and USA is closed until June 21st. Shortly after that date, we hope to have a firm decision for October assuming no additional regulations for travel, etc are placed into effect." DA2, GERMANY. T8, PALAU (Postponed). Yasuo "Yas", JA6UBY, announced the following on May 27th: "I was planning to hold a Short-DX Pedition Palau from September 17th to 26th, 2020. Since the end of last year, the spread of the COVID-19 new coronavirus, which has spread worldwide, has spread, and many people have been infected and dead. There are many places where travel is pro- hibited in some countries. The other day, an airline company told us that the flight plan we were planning to fly to was bound to a major restric- tion, and the transfer airport to Guam Airport was suspended until the end of October. We have to make a very disappointing decision, which is a regret. Therefore, I decided to stay quiet in 2020. When the day is confirmed that the effects of the 2021 COVID-19 new coronavirus have subsided. We are planning a Short-DX Pedition Palau, Not a cancellation. The ticket is on hold because it is postponed. Also, please be careful of your health until the time you meet.
