Grant, VK5GR, reports: I am very pleased to announce that the VK5KI Expedition to Kangaroo Island (IOTA OC-139) has been rescheduled, although it has also been scaled down. It will not be coinciding with the IOTA contest for 2020 and instead will be held during the South Australian school holidays between July 13-18th. It is also being converted into a holiday style expedition with myself (VK5GR), Andrew (VK5AKH) and my family. Bands and equipment are to be finalized but it will likely be only one station covering all bands from 80m to 10m. (it remains to be seen if 160m can be activated - we will see). We are thankful here in South Australia that the authorities have successfully managed my home state's way through the COVID-19 crisis so far. There are no active cases here and havent been (apart from some controlled travel imports) for over a month. They therefore were able to reopen intra-state travel over a week ago, including ferry travel to Kangaroo Island. We are being encouraged to get out into the regions and help our battered hospitality and tourism sectors begin the long road to recovery while continuing to observe social distancing etc. Consequently, many of the other holiday spots locally will be potentially quite busy as people try to overcome cabin fever from the lock-downs. Kangaroo Island, which requires that extra amount of effort and cost with the ferry crossing, should be much quieter, with fewer people and plenty of serenity. We now have a different venue confirmed on the island also, which is quite isolated from the main community. All in all, it should be a great week with some family time, amateur radio and a chance to unwind. We therefore hope to see you on the air as VK5KI from Kangaroo Island OC-139 in July after all! MARKET REEF, OJ0A/OJ0JR WILL BE ACTIVATED AS PART OF THE CODIC-19 EVENT. From Helsinki, Finland, June 02, 2020, by Martti, OH2BH [edited]: First entry group to Market Reef remains on hold in Aland Islands, waiting for better weather. If all works well Henri, OH3JR, will land on the rocks on Friday prior to the event and with no further delay he will hoist an assortment of wires to make the OJ0A callsign QRV as an event multiplier on CW, SSB and FT8. Many things need to fit in place to have OJ0A appearing from the sea-washed lighthouse. Henri will remain in OJ0 for the whole week and operate as OJ0JR. QSL via OH3JR. STAYHOME MESSAGES WILL HOPEFULLY SOON TURN TO STAYSAFE MESSAGES. From Helsinki, Finland, June 02, 2020, by Martti, OH2BH [edited]: Be ready to roll this coming Saturday, June 6th, at 1000 UTC with the following rules: http://ko8sca.com/rules.pdf New STAYSAFE callsigns: VC3STYSAFE by Bill, VE3ES, VK20HOME by Lee, VK3GK and W8I/STAYSAFE by Dave, K3ZJ. While the Covid-19 pandemic is still causing major issues in many parts of the world we are now working on two opposite fronts: while welcoming many countries to the new world with the message of STAYSAFE, we are at the same time giving our thoughts and sympathy to those who still suffer. We welcome all COVID-19 related special callsigns to participate in the June 6-7th event and their efforts will be credited for full contest multiplier value. You are all welcome to this unique worldwide event. YASME FOUNDATION SUPPORTING GRANT TO SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMS AND EXCELLENCE AWARD (Press Release, May 31st). John Miller/K6MM and Rich Seifert/KE1B, from the Northern California DX Club, posted the following: The challenge for 2021 -- Should we plan for an in-person convention in Visalia or a Virtual meeting? Everyone wants to hold out hope for a face-to-face meeting next year, but we have to ask, "What will our 'new normal' lifestyle be like next Apriland can we guarantee a 'Covid-Free' environment for our attendees?" After consultation with a few medical experts, epidemiologists, and long-time attendees of IDXCC, we have concluded that for 2021, the right choice -- and the safest choice -- is to have a Virtual Convention instead of an in-person meeting." Two Weekend days were mentioned in April 2021: Part 1: Friday, April 16-18th Part 2: Friday, April 23-25th Note: Each weekend will be a unique 3-day event, not duplicates Formal Online Registration: Early 2021 - exact dates TBD For more details, see: http://www.dxconvention.com 3XY, GUINEA (IOTA Op). GLOBAL STAYHOME CAMPAIGN REACHED ITS HIGHPOINT -- On June 6th & 7th, over 6000 worldwide participants made the COVID-19 Radio Communication Event a great success. While the logs are still coming in (over 800 at this time) some interesting statistics have already surfaced. The number of countries that participated in the event is more than 120 and the total number of participants was a lot higher than expected. Ten OH*STAYHOME stations with 45 operators resulted 29039 QSOs. (STAYHOME OH Total 132,000). The STAYHOME category was won by ZW5STAYHOME with 4050 QSOs followed not far behind by OH1STAYHOME with 3797 QSOs. The highest Single Operator category score is still unknown at this time as the logs are still coming in. Several high scorer WRTC operators were participating, even the winner LY9A. As the COVID-19 pandemic is in different phases in different countries, this is not the finish of the STAYHOME campaign as only parts of EU and NA are slowly taking steps towards a normal life. We all pray to God for those areas and countries that are still suffering in the hands of this unfortunate virus. We are unified as one to help one to another - people and countries! The final report for the June 6th & 7th event will be released in a few weeks and it will be followed by a lottery for the great prizes provided by the event organizers and Yaesu Musen Co. The Rebel DX Group (RDXG) team reports/posted the following on June 16th [edited]: After today's telephone conversation with the Norwegian Polar Institute, we learned that the Institute suspends all scientific expeditions to a small weather base located on the west side of the Bouvet island. It is very likely that the station was swept to the ocean by "landslide". The 3Y0I radio expedition is not at risk. We are keep pushing to get a full budget before we set a sail again by end of the year. Our base will be established on the eastern side of the island on the glacier. This part of the island is not exposed to the worst western winds, waves and landslides. We want to remind you that we have access to accurate, current satellite photographic data of our landing site. Dom, 3Z9DX, also has over 100 pictures from his non-radio visit and materials from other people who had visited the island. We are really well prepared to do this job. Now is your turn to help or forget about Bouvet in the log. Dear friends -- Due to the Covid-19 pandemic it is still impossible to travel to Swains Island. This means that we have to postpone our DXpedition until spring 2021 at the earliest. Alex Jennings and the team will start planning again as soon as we are allowed to travel to American Samoa without restrictions (such as 14 days in quarantine). All equipment already purchased is waiting for us in Pago Pago. We are very disappointed with this postponement, but if we look at it from a positive angle, propagation will be better next year! We continue our Swains DXpedition project and keep you informed via our mailing list, website and the social media channels such as Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/swains2020) and Twitter (https://twitter.com/swains2020). .... A special endorsement will be attached for stations contacting their sister oper- ation, WM3PEN, in Philadelphia, PA, where independence was declared. New since 2015, the 13 Colonies have added a second sister event station. GB13COL will operate from Durham, England. The 13 Colonies certificate will have a Liberty Bell added for a contact with WM3PEN. There should be at least two stations from each on the 13 colonies on the air, as well as Super contest stations, multi-operator Club stations and OM and XYL teams. The U.S. original 13 colonies are CT-DE-GA-MA-MD-NC-NH-NJ-NY-PA- RI-SC-VA. CQ NEWS (Press Release - Tim Shoppa, N3QE, Named CQ Contesting Editor Succeeds Dave Siddall, K3ZJ). Rich, W2VU, reported on June 26th: Tim Shoppa, N3QE, of Bethesda, Maryland, has been named CQ magazine's Contesting Editor, CQ Editor Rich Moseson, W2VU, announced today. Tim succeeds Dave Siddall, K3ZJ, who is stepping down after five years of writing the magazine's monthly contesting column. Recent increases in work responsibilities limit the amount of time Siddall has available to write about contesting. Shoppa is an active contester and has been secretary of the Potomac Valley Radio Club for several years. He closely tracks individual con- tester and contest club activities worldwide. He has a modest but active station on a suburban lot in the Washington, DC, suburbs where he con- sistently wins the USA TBW (Tri-Bander/Wires) category in the CQ WPX contests - despite having only a wire antenna - and guest operates several times a year at large multi-multi contest stations. He also had the top 80-meter score in the 2018 CQ DX Marathon. Tim works for the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, co- ordinating the data acquisition of 70,000 devices around the railroad and the supervisory control center computers at the Washington DC Metrorail system. He holds a patent covering track circuit monitoring and alerting in automatic train control systems. Licensed since age 10, Shoppa took a 30-year break from active hamming after high school before rediscovering the hobby in 2008 and becoming heavily involved in contesting. Tim says he hopes to use the CQ contesting column "to encourage both individual operators and clubs to get on the air in ham radio contests while improving their skills and stations." "I thank Dave for his five years of dedication to the CQ contesting column and input on a variety of subjects," said Moseson, "and I look forward to working with Tim as he brings his combined experience as a 'little pistol' and a 'big gun' to the pages of CQ." Shoppa's first column will appear in the September, 2020 issue. GB0, WALES (Special Event).
