We will be QRV during the best days of the month for EME. Our team callsign for Marquesas operation is TX7MB. All the details of the 6m EME operation from TX7MB, including the planned 6m EME operating schedule, are here: http://www.bigskyspaces.com/w7gj/Marquesas%202020.htm For details on the 2m operation, please see KB7Q's site here: https://tx7mb.blogspot.com I am still investigating the possibility of a solo activation of the Austral Islands on 6m EME at the end of October before flying up to Hiva Oa. My callsign for any Austral Island operation will be FO/W7GJ. I would not be in the Austral Islands during the best days of the month for 6m EME, but the Degradation during the last 12 days of October is still quite reasonable. Given the fact that cndx then are very similar to the days when most of my contacts were made from S79GJ a few months ago, I am optimistic that I could be quite successful with a number of stations still needing FO/A. South Orkney Islands DXpedition VP8PJ -- We are pleased to announce the call sign for the Perseverance DX Group's expedition South Orkney 2020 will be changed to VP8PJ. In past years it was relatively easy to get a preferred VP8 call sign for the British Antarctic Territory. After a licensing administrative change, we were unable to obtain a VP8 call sign for operation from South Orkney and were advised to use /VP8. Alan, VK6CQ, a recent addition to the team, holds the call sign VP8PJ that was issued to him for operation from the British Antarctic Territory. After submission of a copy of Alan's license, ARRL has issued us a new LoTW certificate for the use of this call from South Orkney for the duration of our expedition. 73, Team VP8PJ Website: https://sorkney.com/ Please direct your questions to: info at sorkney.com VP9, BERMUDA (Reminder/Update). Joe, WB9EAO, will be active as WB9EAO/VP9 from the Hamilton QTH of Ed, VP9GE (see http://vp9ge.com/), between January 9-14th. Joe states, "This is my first DXpedition! So please forgive the operating problems and delays!" Activity will be holiday style on 160-17 meters using CW and SSB. He will use various wire antennas and a 4 element yagi for 20/15/10 meters with 100w. QSL via WB9EAO, direct, by the Bureau, eQSL or LoTW. W8S SWAINS ISLAND DXPEDITION NEWS (Update, dated December 27th) [edited]. Everything is on schedule for our Swains DXpedition. Last month Martin, PA4WM, and Gerben, PG5M, have been working on the antennas for Swains. After some small design changes, the antennas are ready now (thanks to Dado E74AW for helping with the 160m antenna). We also have collected a lot of other equipment and tools. We were in doubt if everything would fit in the 3 boxes we created especially for this adventure. This morning we started packing all the equipment. At the end of the afternoon we were ready. Luckily everything fitted in the boxes: 14 RX/TX antennas, 800 meters of coax-cable, 2.4 KM of radials, bandpass filters, power supplies and tools were packed in the boxes. The boxes are ready for transport, the total weight is approx. 200 KG. Within 3 weeks we will transport it to American Samoa. After finishing this phase of our project we will now focus on the next phase the radio and computer equipment. The whole team is looking forward to activate Swains Island as W8S. Regards, Ronald Stuy, PA3EWP ZP, PARAGUAY. Manu, ZP9MCE, will be active from Hohenau-Itap?a during the CQ 160m CW Contest (January 24-26th) and the ARRL DX CW Contest (February 15-16th) as a Single-Op entry. The IARU (Inter- national Amateur Radio Union) Web page reports on January 7th: "The first three 'Authorizations to Operate' have been issued to 3 Tunisian amateurs. These are the first issued since 1956. 3V8HB, 3V8MN and 3V1MB will soon be on the air from their homes rather than being restricted to operating from a club station. Issuing individual authorizations to operate is a new pro- cess in Tunisia and involves a number of stages, including equipment con- formity checks. This is great news for Tunisians that the process now exists so that radio amateurs can practice their hobby from homes in full compliance with the Tunisian Laws. The IARU Member Society ARAT extends its thanks to the National Agency of Frequencies, the Ministry of Tele- communications and all involved parties for making this happen." https://iaru-r1.org/index.php/174-news/latest-news/1928-tunisia-issues-personal-licences-to-operate 4S, SIR LANKA. The DARC honors 35 years of SDR-technology with special callsign and special-DOK. In order to acknowledge the high importance of digital signal processing for communications technology in general and amateur radio in particular, a special event station "DL35SDR" will be active from the greater Munich area throughout the year 2020. The Special-DOK "35SDR" was issued for this station. Today, digital signal processing via Software Defined Radio (SDR) is the generally accepted standard for decoding and generating of radio signals. Commercial services have been using this technology for a long time and nowadays amateur radio is not imaginable without SDR. Prof. Dr.- Ing. habil. Ulrich L. Rohde, DJ2LR / N1UL, was the first describing the possibilities and perspectives of SDR in a congress lecture at the "Third International Conference on HF Communication Systems and Techniques" in London in February 1985 (classified). The title was: "A Sampling of Techniques". DJ2LR / N1UL, member of DARC Amateur Radio Club Munich South (C18) is recognized as one of the pioneers of SDR technology 35 years ago. https://www.facebook.com/groups/darchfref/permalink/2254053784888101 FG/TO7, GUADELOUPE. VP8PJ SOUTH ORKNEY ISLAND DXPEDITION NEWS (Press Release #10, dated January 20th).[edited] South Orkney Islands DXpedition VP8PJ (AN-008) -- Permits - Landing and camping at South Orkney requires permission from several government agencies. This multi step process takes months to complete. We recently received our final approval, the "Antarctic Conservation Act Permit" from the National Science Foundation. Other agencies in the process were: the US Department of State and the Environ- mental Protection Agency. We appreciate the cooperation and assistance we received from these agencies to complete and submit the detailed applications and other required documentation. New Corporate Sponsor -- Joining the list of corporate sponsors is The DX Store, a supplier of quality products for the amateur radio market. Equipment Status -- After 8 weeks our sea container arrived in Punta Arenas, Chile on January 13, 2020. Operating Schedule -- The team will follow a rotating 4 hours on and 8 hours off schedule. In their off-time they?ll catch up on sleep, per- form equipment/campsite maintenance, operate from positions available for roving operators, or (weather permitting) go back to Braveheart for a shower and hot meal. Island Assignments -- Each team member is assigned tasks while on the island. Major activities are prioritized and staffed accordingly. The Braveheart crew will help with the heavy lifting and other setup activ- ities. After landing, designated teams will first erect the WeatherPort shelters, install the power grid, and furnish the sleeping and operating shelters. Meanwhile the antenna teams will install the HF antennas, followed by the low band antennas. Weather permitting, setup is expected to take approximately two days. Fundraising -- We appreciate the support from the worldwide DX and amateur radio community. With the addition of Japan?s Nara DX Associ- ation, The Spokane DX Association and W4DXCC By SEDCO Convention, we currently have fifty-two clubs/foundations signed on, over 500 indi- viduals and 60 Premier Sponsors who each donated $200(USD), or more. We continue to make progress towards our goal of the radio team paying 50% of the project cost with sponsorships paying the remainder. Is your DX club listed on our website? Thanks for your continued interest and support of our project, we?ll publish one more press release before leaving home in early February. Good luck in the pileups. 73, Team VP8PJ Website: https://sorkney.com/ Please direct your questions to: info at sorkney.com VQ9, CHAGOS ISLANDS. The following is from the Swains Island DXpedition Web page: 50 days to go.... The preparations are part of the fun too. An amazing load of work is done by all team members. Antennas, hardware, software, the camp set up, medical well being, transportation, satellite connections, inter camp communication, operating schedules, vaccinations to name just a few.... Yesterday we had a video conference call between all international team members to discuss the final loose ends. All lights are green. The European members will depart from Amsterdam and Frankfurt on Saturday, March 7th. Flying through Singapore, New Zealand and Samoa to their neigh- boring islands American Samoa. Our American members will depart the same weekend to meet up in Pago Pago, American Samoa. The vessel Manu?Atele* will bring us to the Swains atoll. This will be a 24 hour journey. Landing on the island will be done by smaller boats at high tide to minimize reef issues. A serious challenge. Think of all the radio equipment, antenna materials, tents, generators, fuel and food for two weeks. The ship will leave after landing. Hopefully picking the team up again after 14 days. * https://swains2020.lldxt.eu/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/MV.jpg For more details and updates, see: https://swains2020.lldxt.eu ZF, CAYMAN ISLANDS.
