REBEL DX GROUP (Update). Could the Rebel DX Group be heading to Conway Reef and be active as 3D2CR or possibly Banaba Island as T33T? Early in the week, Dom, 3Z9DX, was reportedly on Fiji, and then early May 11th, there were cluster spots of E51DOM/MM on 20 meters and on the ANZA net. Also, a post on the Rebel DX Group's FaceBook page on May 11th states, "Part of the team is already on our base place ...( Pacific ) E51DOM/mm active". In any case, we know the Rebel DX Group is on its way to some- where in the South Pacific Ocean. SILENT KEY. On May 6th, Kostas Stamatis, SV1DPI, reported on FaceBook the following [edited]: A very close friend of mine, Monk Apollo, SV2ASP, passed away at 20:45 UTC on 5/5/2019. His funeral will be held in Mount Athos at 9UTC, 6 May 2019. The last 3 years he gave a battle with brain cancer. He was 64 years old. He was born near Preveza in West Greece. He was part of a large family with a lot of brothers and sisters. After his studies, he followed the path of complete dedication to Christ and became a monk in 1973 in Mon- astery of Myrtia near Agrinio, in West Greece. After that he continued to be a monk in Monastery of Proussos and finally in 1980 he moved in the Monastery of Docheiariou in Mount Athos. In spring 1986 his monastery had remained without telephone for over five months, something not unusual on Mount Athos. One of the monks was injured in his eye but they went to the hospital after 2 days because of lack of communications. When Mr. Georgiadis (SV2RE), an ophthalmology professor, heard the story, he recommended that somebody in the monastery become an amateur radio operator in order to guarantee communication in case of emergency. So in 1988, Monk Apollo obtained his radio amateur license and the call SV2ASP. He needed 2 more years to get the license from Holy Council. Finally he was on the air for first time in 1990. He celebrated his 10 years on the air with the call SY2A in 2000, and he was trying to find some free time to be on the air when his monastic duties allowed him. In spite of all the difficulties, he was sacrificing his very little spare time to make the voice of the Holy Mountain heard on the air and to give joy to a multitude of friends impatiently waiting for a contact. He was trying to spread, through his presence on the radio waves, a message of hope and optimism ? from the ascetic world of Mount Athos to the troubled world outside. Even there are more monks who are radio amateurs in Mount Athos, he was the only one on the air from Mount Athos, working DX. I met him for first time in 2001. After 2003 and my visit with K6SV (SK), me and my fellows from SZ1A club, maintained his antennas and radios. With the help of Zorro, JH1AJT, we made a very good installation in 2014 which was proved more powerful from Monk Apollo... We will miss his smile, his good willing and friendship. I will never forget the times he awaked up in the middle of the night to make skeds with amateurs needing Mount Athos for a new one. I was lucky to have him as a friend. His prayers helped me, my family and many others. Many hams visited him and became better Christians. Some of them became Orthodox. Ham radio will find another operator sooner or later from Mount Athos (according my infos, Monastery of Docheiariou will take care so another monk will become a radio amateur soon and get Monk Apollo's place and duties). But we always miss him and his warm embrace... RIP.... Kostas SV1DPI T8, PALAU. Our newly acquired 20 foot sea container has been set in place next to the 40 footer we used for the Bouvet attempt. Our laptops have all been updated, loaded with appropriate software, and tested. Our Flex stations have arrived, all packed in Pelican cases and including in each a Flex 6700, power supply, foot switch, Radiosport headset, and necessary accessories. Members of our team will arrive at the staging site in Peoria, IL, on May 10th and begin inventorying everything being shipped to Pitcairn, testing the gear, doing some pre-assembly, re-packing the needed gear into the 20 foot container, and documenting everything for customs. Our container will be picked up and trucked to a railhead in Chicago on May 21st to begin its journey to a container ship bound for Tauranga, New Zealand. The inland freight cost, customs and agency fees, and ocean freight costs represent a significant and current expense for us. If you have supported financially, we thank you. From the VP6R Web page [edited]: "Marching to Peoria - May 10, 2019 -- Nine of the fourteen VP6R Pitcairn Island DXpedition team members (N4GRN, W8HC, K9NW, K9CT, WB9Z, W0GJ, K0PC, W0VTT, and K0IR) spent the weekend in Peoria, IL. We removed all the needed items from the 40 ft. sea container that traveled from the U.S. to Chile; to Bouvet (never landed or unpacked); to Cape Town, SA; back to Chile; and finally back to the U.S. We inventoried the needed items, tested them, and repacked them in our 20 foot sea container bound for New Zealand. Lay It All Out! -- In short order we had equipment spread all over the adjacent parking lot. Aluminum masts, PVC tubes filled with beams, rolls of coax, reels of radial wire, components of a 90 foot 160 meter vertical, Spiderbeam poles, power supplies, amplifiers, Pelican cases containing complete stations, EME equipment, and dozens of crates of small parts lay in front of us. Plan The Repack -- There?s a lot to think about. Cargo hold openings, weights, fork-lift access, top loading, balance, customs access, tight packing, and order of importance to name a few. But, after talking it over, we had a plan and began packing the new container. List and Inventory -- The contents of each crate, box, barrell, or bundle were recorded on packing slips and in a master inventory list for customs. Queue Up and Palletize Items -- Heavy things on the bottom, light- weight items on top, with efficient use of space ? think everything through. Repacking the Amplifiers -- Jerry, WB9Z, and Mike, K9NW, removed the ACOM 1500 amplifiers from their cardboard packing and placed them into our specially constructed plywood cases for added protection during their long journey. Steady As She Goes -- With the steady hand of K0PC, our fork-lift operator, we got everything accurately positioned inside the new container. The Die is Cast -- Here?s George, N4GRN, completing the documentation. We are packed, locked, and loaded. A crane will place our container on a truck on May 23rd and the DXpedition gear will begin its journey by truck, rail, and sea." CQ NEWS RELEASE (Announcing: 2019 Inductees, CQ DX Hall of Fame). [edited] Rich Moseson, W2VU, Editor or CQ Amateur Radio, sent out the following on May 17th: Joe Taylor, K1JT, and the Italian DXpedition Team Inducted into CQ DX Hall of Fame -- (Xenia, OH - May 17, 2019) - CQ magazine today announced the induction of one individual and one group to the CQ DX Hall of Fame, which honors those DXers who not only excel in personal performance but who also "give back" to the hobby in outstanding ways. CQ DX Editor Bob Schenck, N2OO, presented Hall of Fame plaques at an induction ceremony held at the annual Dayton DX dinner on May 17th. The 2019 inductees to the CQ DX Hall of Fame are: * Joe Taylor, K1JT - Nobel Prize winning-astrophysicist who has revolu- tionized the face of DXing with his suite of WSJT weak-signal digital modes, including FT8, which is capable of decoding signals well below the noise level. The modes pioneered by Joe have kept the HF bands busy and the DXers active even during the current solar minimum. Other WSJT modes have also revolutionized VHF/UHF DXing via moonbounce and meteor scatter. Taylor shared the 1993 Nobel Prize in physics for the discovery of binary pulsars. * Silvano Borsa, I2YSB, and the Italian DXpedition Team - The Italian DXpedition Team has made more than 20 major DXpeditions in the past 20 years, mostly to Africa, where its members have activated more than a dozen rare countries, making nearly 1.4 million QSOs along the way. In addition, the team has arranged for the donation and delivery of two ambulances from Italy to Somalia, one of the many countries it has activated. In addition to team leader Silvano Borsa, I2YSB, the Italian DX- pedition Team members include: Alfeo Caputo, I1HJT; Vincio Ravizza, IK2CIO; Angelo Selva, IK2CKR; Marcello Cassinelli, IK2DIA; Stefano Casari, IK2HKT; Angelo Gino Zambaiti, IK2RZP, and Mac Shimamoto, JA3USA. The CQ DX Hall of Fame was established in 1967 to recognize those amateurs who have made major contributions to DXing and DXpeditioning. This is the 53rd annual induction. -30- -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- TO BE ADDED TO THE OPDX MAILING LIST -- Click or send requests to: Help: Subscribe: Unsubscribe: OPDX WORLD-WIDE WEB HOME PAGE (provided by John, K8YSE): http://www.papays.com/opdx.html NOW ON TWITTER: https://twitter.com/kb8nw_opdx ALSO VISIT THE NORTHERN OHIO DX ASSOCIATION'S WEB PAGES AT: http://www.nodxa.org/ http://www.facebook.com/NorthernOhioDxAssociation -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- * All excerpts and distribution of "The OPDX Bulletin" are granted as long as KB8NW/OPDX/BARF80 receives credit. ** To contribute DX info, please send via InterNet Mail to: OR OR Information can now be faxed to the following phone line at: 1-419-828-7791 (F A X only!) /EXIT -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Tedd Mirgliotta, KB8NW - E-mail addresses: or Editor of the Ohio/Penn DX Bulletin (OPDX - DXer's Tool of Excellence) President of the "Northern Ohio DX Association" (NODXA) DX Chairman for the "Northern Ohio Amateur Radio Society ARRL Assistant Director of the Great Lakes Division Sysop of the "Basic Amateur Radio Frequency BBS" (BARF80.ORG) From kb8nw at hotmail.com Sat May 18 23:05:28 2019 From: kb8nw at hotmail.com (Tedd Mirgliotta) Date: Sun, 19 May 2019 03:05:28 +0000 Subject: [DX] Ohio/Penn DX Special Bulletin No. 1414.3 Message-ID: SB DX @ WW < KB8NW $OPDX.1414.3 Ohio/Penn DX Special Bulletin No. 1414.3 The Ohio/Penn DX PacketCluster DX Special Bulletin No. 1414.3 BID: $OPDX.1414.3 May 18, 2019 Editor Tedd Mirgliotta, KB8NW Provided by BARF80.ORG (Cleveland, Ohio) Written/Sent From Strongsville, OH Thanks to the Northern Ohio Amateur Radio Society, Northern Ohio DX Association, Ohio/Penn PacketCluster Network, AB5K & the AR TelNet Clusters Network and W2VU for the following DX information. CQ NEWS RELEASE (Announcing: 2019 Inductees, CQ Contest Hall of Fame). [edited] Rich Moseson, W2VU, Editor or CQ Amateur Radio, sent out the following on May 18th: Bruce Horn, WA7BNM; Dean Straw, N6BV, and Kresimir "Chris" Kovarik, 9A5K (SK), Inducted into CQ Contest Hall of Fame -- (Xenia, OH - May 18, 2019) - CQ magazine today announced the induction of three new members to the CQ Contest Hall of Fame, which honors those contesters who not only excel in personal performance but who also "give back" to the hobby in outstanding ways. CQ Contesting Editor David Siddall, K3ZJ, presented Hall of Fame plaques at an induction ceremony held at the annual Dayton contest dinner on May 18th. The 2019 inductees to the CQ Contest Hall of Fame are: * Bruce Horn, WA7BNM, provides a great service to the contesting com- munity via web-based resources for many popular contests. He maintains the most comprehensive contest calendar on the web, and he developed the popular <3830Scores.com> website where contesters go to post raw scores after an event ends, to compare notes and search past contest logs. He is also manager of the North American QSO Party and developed the current National Contest Journal website. * Dean Straw, N6BV, is an outstanding contester, a talented writer, editor, presenter and educator, and has advanced the state of the art in antennas, computer modeling, propagation and contest planning and preparation. As an ARRL staff member for 15 years, he edited multiple editions of The ARRL Antenna Book and several other public- ations. He also developed the High Frequency Terrain Analysis (HFTA) software ,which revolutionized antenna system planning by linking antenna design, installation height, tower location, surrounding terrain, and the expected angles of propagation to target regions. His work with the propagation prediction program VOACAP revolution- ized the way we plan for contests, allowing specific band opening predictions dependent on solar conditions to indicate when band changes and operations should be planned. * Kresimir "Chris" Kovarik, 9A5K (SK), developed the DXLog and KLog programs, competed in the World Radiosport Team Championship (WRTC) and served the broader amateur radio community in Europe as past president of the Croatian Amateur Radio Association and as vice- chairman of the IARU Region 1 HF Committee. He became a Silent Key earlier this year. The CQ Contest Hall of Fame was established in 1986 to recognize those amateurs who have made major contributions to the art of radio contesting. This is the 36th annual induction. ** To contribute DX info, please send via InterNet Mail to: OR OR Information can now be faxed to the following phone line at: 1-419-828-7791 (F A X only!) /EXIT -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Tedd Mirgliotta, KB8NW - E-mail addresses: or Editor of the Ohio/Penn DX Bulletin (OPDX - DXer's Tool of Excellence) President of the "Northern Ohio DX Association" (NODXA) DX Chairman for the "Northern Ohio Amateur Radio Society ARRL Assistant Director of the Great Lakes Division Sysop of the "Basic Amateur Radio Frequency BBS" (BARF80.ORG) From kb8nw at hotmail.com Wed May 22 18:20:07 2019 From: kb8nw at hotmail.com (Tedd Mirgliotta) Date: Wed, 22 May 2019 22:20:07 +0000 Subject: [DX] Ohio/Penn DX Special Bulletin No. 1414.4 Message-ID: SB DX @ WW < KB8NW $OPDX.1414.4 Ohio/Penn DX Special Bulletin No. 1414.4 The Ohio/Penn DX PacketCluster DX Special Bulletin No. 1414.4 BID: $OPDX.1414.4 May 22, 2019 Editor Tedd Mirgliotta, KB8NW Provided by BARF80.ORG (Cleveland, Ohio) Written/Sent From Strongsville, OH Thanks to the Northern Ohio Amateur Radio Society, Northern Ohio DX Association, Ohio/Penn PacketCluster Network, AB5K & the AR TelNet Clusters Network and K0IR for the following DX information. DXpeditions: When They Are More Than Just Ham Radio Ralph Fedor ? K0IR Access to some entities on the DXCC list has been hampered by the behavior of previous DXpedition team members. This is not good. As an alternative, if we can add goodwill to the content of a DXpedition, we benefit others, enhance the image of amateur radio and DXing, make us feel good about ourselves, and pave the way for future DXpeditions. An opportunity to do a good thing presented itself during the Pitcairn Island DXpeditioin planning. We asked the residents of Pitcairn, ?What can we do for you? Make a list for us.? They responded. The people of Pitcairn Island are not impoverished, totally cut off from the world, or without access to information. But some things you and I take for granted are just hard to get on Pitcairn. The list they provided us included lawn mower blades and belts, band saw guides and bearings, a quad bike fuel tank, pizza cutters, sanding and shaping discs, and some foodstuffs. The list they provided us included lawn mower blades and belts, band saw guides and bearings, a quad bike fuel tank, pizza cutters, sanding and shaping discs, and some foodstuffs. Our team also realized that at the time of our arrival there will some young people, between the ages of 2 and 12, on Pitcairn.. Our team members were given the opportunity to personally contribute some money to buy these kids some toys, crafts, games, and educational items. We did that and I went shopping. For Immediate Release Press Release #3 May 26, 2019 South Orkney Islands DX-pedition (AN-008) Project plans continue to be developed. The radio and antenna strategies are complete and work is underway building detailed project plans and sourcing equipment. Call Sign ---------- We will use the call sign: VP8/VP8DXU Corporate Sponsors ------------------ A key component of any serious DX-pedition is the radio equipment. We are pleased to announce that Elecraft is again partnering with us as a major equipment sponsor. Elecraft will provide fully featured K3s transceivers, KPA-500 amplifiers and P3 Panadapters. Elecraft has been a trusted supplier of all Perseverance DX Group (PDXG) projects, we appreciate their continued support and sponsorship. Our other corporate sponsors include: DX Engineering, Arlan Communications (RadioSport) and Rig Expert. Tent Weekend ------------ Scheduled for the 2nd weekend of July in Placerville, California is our tent assembly project. We will unpack, inspect, make any necessary repairs and repack the 3 tents we acquired for this project. To minimize island setup time, we will construct and ?kit? the tent bases / flooring in California. The tents and flooring will then be disassembled and repacked for sea shipment. Fundraising ----------- We received significant financial support from the Northern California DX Foundation, the German DX Foundation and the Far East DX-Ploiters. As of this writing a total of 29 clubs/foundations have committed to support the project and 178 individuals have shown their support. This is a good start, but we still have a long way to go in order to meet the goal of the team members funding 50% of the estimated project cost of $325,000(USD). If you need South Orkney for an ATNO, or plan to work us, we would appre- ciate your help. Confirmations: -------------- As with previous PDXG DX-peditions we are again offering a tiered structure for early LoTW upload (from the island) and free QSL cards at the $50 or greater level. Both offers have proven to be very popular with the DX community. Details are available at the website or by contacting us at: info at sorkney.com Ham Radio Events ---------------- With Visalia and Dayton behind us, one or more of our team members will be attending: Dallas Ham-Com, Ham Radio Friedrichshafen (Germany), the ARRL Arizona State Convention (Prescott, AZ) and the Pacific Northwest DX Convention. Please look for us and say hello. We enjoyed meeting many DXers at Visalia and Dayton.
