We made it half way there before the Rebel catamaran and crew got turned around by the weather last week, but we?re persistent (to say the least) and that persistence has paid off. If you wish, send your recordings to (admin at rebeldxgroup.com) and before the first stop of our Pacific DXpedition is over we?ll post them on this site for all to hear. QSL info and the ClubLog online log links are posted here: https://www.rebeldxgroup.com/qsl-online-log-info/ See you in the pileups! Brian Bird, NX0X, of Duluth, Minnesota, has been named the new Custodian for CQ magazine's USA-Counties Award (USA-CA), effective June 1, 2019, CQ Editor Rich Moseson, W2VU, announced today. Brian succeeds Ted Melinosky, K1BV, who served as USA-CA Custodian and CQ Awards Editor for 21 years. Several updates in the USA-CA award rules will take effect at the same time. Brian has been a county hunter since the 1990s and earned the USA-CA All Counties Award in 2004, followed a year later by his wife, Shari, KB0MHH. The two of them hosted the national county-hunters' convention in 2011. Brian is an airline pilot who splits his time each month between flying and working in his airline's training center. "I am looking forward to working with Brian as he assumes the leader- ship of one of the most challenging award programs in all of amateur radio," noted CQ Editor Rich Moseson, W2VU. "With 3077 counties in the United States, working 'the whole ball of wax' takes a great deal of dedication and perseverance. Administering the award takes a special commitment, as well. Brian will be only the sixth USA-CA Custodian in the award's 58-year history." "I am very honored to being selected as your new USA-CA award custodian," noted NX0X. "I'm looking forward to carrying on with the great history of the awards program and any challenges ahead. Part of being the USA-CA award custodian is to not only handle the issuing of awards that have been earned in a timely manner, but giving you the public recognition so rightly deserved for earning such a prestigious award. I can only hope that I serve you all with the same great service of my predecessors. Hoping that many new counties for you are just up the band." The rules updates primarily reflect the realities of living in the 21st century, such as replacing International Reply Coupons as a payment method with PayPal; and permitting (encouraging) applications to be sub- mitted by e-mail rather than only on paper. Also, due to significant increases in the cost of international postage, it is necessary for us to add a DX postage surcharge for mailing certificates to addresses out- side the United States. The complete updated rules appear in CQ's June 2019 Awards column and will be posted as soon as possible after June 1st on the CQ website at . As of June 1, any correspondence relating to the CQ USA-CA program should be directed to: Brian Bird, NX0X, 4567 Caribou Lake Road, Duluth, MN 55811-9607, USA; or via e-mail to . OPDX received the following letter from a young Iranian operator: My name is Abbas, I am 15 years old. I am from Iran and my callsign is EP3AS. You can view my page on QRZ.com. I'm very interested in amateur radio, but I don't have a transceiver to do work on the air. Originally, my father and I made a handmade transceiver, but now this device has been destroyed. And I am so sad, I do not have the opportunity to repair it, I do not have radio components. I beg you to publish my request in your newsletter so that someone will respond to my request for help and help me to send a gift to a simple amateur radio station. I am very ashamed to ask for it, but my family and I are very poor and have no means to buy any transceiver. Here in Iran it is very expensive. I will never forget your gratitude. I hope and believe that with your help they will help me..... 73! Sincerely, Abbas FG, GUADELOUPE. [edited] NORTHERN VILLAGE, JUNE 06, 2019 NORTHERN MARKET REEF, THE OJ0-LAND IS CELEBRATING HER 50TH DXCC YEAR DXOTICA FROM 1969 TO 2019 The first ever DXpedition to icy Market Reef landed on December 27th of 1969 and put OJ0MR on the air. The first operators were Sigge, OH0NI (SK), Martti, OH2BH, Erkki, OH2BW (SK) and Raimo, OH2KK. Soon after the first operation, the permanent lighthouse keeper Karl-Erik, OJ0MA, also hit the airwaves. A stream of DXpeditions followed. These later DXpeditions kept OJ0 a dream location for hundreds and hundreds DXpeditioners, allowing them to discover the light and become performers within the admired DX- pedition industry. The Northern California DX Foundation (NCDXF) had helped OJ0MA become a household DXer and later a great ham as OH0NA, while later-on, the NCDXF and OHDXF assisted the Finnish Light House Society (FLS) to restore the beauty of this remote DX outpost between Aland Islands and Sweden. The 2019 season will see many veteran DXpeditioners returning to their dreamland to provide OJ0 QSOs to those who deserve ? the Deserving! Their return will enable them to once again experience the camaraderie and friendship only a true DX location can provide. Adding to the crew will be upcoming OH and SM youngsters! The invited guests of the season are: CO8DM, E21EIC, E20NKB, W5XU, DS4EOI, JH4RHF, JE6HIB, PB2T, DJ9ZB, DL3DXX, DJ4MF, DL5SE, SM0W, SA0LAT and others. They will be hosted by OH3WS, OH3JR, OH2BH, OH2TA, OG2M, OH2PM, OH4EA, OH6FSG, OH6LSR, OH6KV, OH6OK, OH6NJ and the younger vintage of OH2FB, OH1UBO and OH3UAF. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- The activity is in several phases throughout the summer and may even extend to the hard winter season in order to capture the best low-band openings. It all starts this Saturday June 8t with OJ0AW and OJ0JR. Next, following the international week of July 6th, will be OJ0A and OJ0Z. Then the IARU Contest weekend of July 13-14th with OJ0B and then turning to Youth Week of OJ0C from July 15th, and IOTA week of July 27th (OJ0DX) and Light House weekend of August 1st (OJ0O). The OJ0-regulars Pasi, OH3WS/OJ0W, Henri, OH3JR/OJ0JR; Martti, OH2BH/OJ0BH and Pertti, OG2M/OJ0MR will take the slots along with their official duties. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- There are twenty-one valid OJ0 licenses. More than 50% are expected to be active during this year. If you work five of them (5) in 2019, a special award will be released. If you work ten (10) of them in 2019, you will qualify for a special award and a symbolic key to the light house. Your log extract should be submitted to Pasi, OH3WS, the contact person between the FLS and the global ham fraternity. The Aland Islands Postal Administration will also release a special Market Reef stamp to commemorate Market?s 50th DXCC year for philatelist community. The special stamp on a Market Reef postcard can be obtained from the Market Reef Post Office with appropriate stamping at the cost of 4.00 Euros from Pasi, OH3WS/OJ0W. And finally, as the sugar at the bottom, the Aland Island boat captain Fredrick will provide a day tour to those who want to see this wonderland and make few contacts on their own from OJ0 on July 10th and July 16th. Please contact Martti, OH2BH for details at (oh2bh at arrl.net). OPDX MAILING LIST (Just A Reminder). The "new" OPDX Mailing List is back up and running! The deadline for requesting a partial 48% refund of your financial contribution to 3Y?Z has now passed (March 15, 2019). A large number of you reponded favorably to the refund option and either requested a refund, donated their refund to either the 3Y0Z team, NCDXF, INDEXA or GDXF (German DX Fndn.) The process was orderly and I thank you for your cooperation. These were very unusual circumstances. Any plans for the 3Y0Z team to attempt a return to Bouvet are currently "on hold" as we want the Rebel DX Group to be free to complete their efforts to activate Bouvet. We wish them good luck and a safe, successful mission. Vy 73, Bob-K4UEE, 3Y0Z Co-leader and Chief Financial Officer 3D2CR CONWAY REEF DXPEDITION NEWS (Rebel DX Group Update). OK1RD (now masquerading as OK1YQ - which is a callsign that does not appear on qrz.com!) Guys - I would recommend that any of us that are really interested send an email to the ARRL DXCC desk and ask that this 160m DXCC OK1YQ listing be taken down - and that this fellow be prohibited from participating in the DXCC program going forward. This is ridiculous and I agree - who is now running the DXCC desk? Sure wish NN1N and some of the older, wiser DXCC managers were still around to police this kind of activity! What utter nonsense! 73 JEFF VY2ZM Hi Jeff, Any word on this? It's been over 6 months and nothing but silence This whole situation stunk to high heaven the first time around. Why did it have to return for an encore? Wasn't this all settled and put to bed years ago back when NC1L, NN1N & K1ZZ were running things? The current crew of lightweights they have running things in Newington seem hell bent on seeing how fast they can run 100 years of ARRL and and 80+ years of DXCC straight into the ground. Doesn't the Board take notice of matters such as this any more? It's an embarrassment for which all involved should be ashamed. Seems like the days of W1CW and integrity and standards in the DXCC program are now gone for good. Maybe the time is ripe for Don Miller and Romeo to stage their comebacks too? 73, Charlie On 11/17/2018 5:42 AM, k1zm--- via Topband wrote: In a message dated 11/17/2018 10:07:05 AM Coordinated Universal Time, sm2cew at telia.com writes: If OK1YQ is OK1RD as you say Bob, then pse read: http://www.g3txf.com/dxtrip/Fake-C21XF/Fake-C21.html https://www.eham.net/ehamforum/smf/index.php?action=printpage;topic=110968.0 73 Peter SM2CEW From kb8nw at hotmail.com Sun Jun 23 10:59:07 2019 From: kb8nw at hotmail.com (Tedd Mirgliotta) Date: Sun, 23 Jun 2019 14:59:07 +0000 Subject: [DX] Ohio/Penn DX Bulletin #1419 Message-ID: SB DX @ WW < KB8NW $OPDX.1419 Ohio/Penn DX Bulletin No. 1419 The Ohio/Penn DX PacketCluster DX Bulletin No. 1419 BID: $OPDX.1419 June 24, 2019 Editor Tedd Mirgliotta, KB8NW Provided by BARF80.ORG (Cleveland, Ohio) Written/Sent from Strongsville, Ohio Thanks to the Northern Ohio Amateur Radio Society, Northern Ohio DX Association, Ohio/Penn PacketCluster Network, the AB5K's AR Cluster Networks, NJ1Q & W1AW, NG3K & ADXO, W3UR & The Daily DX, K4ZW, WA4DAN, WB6RSE, K8GI, K8YSE, W8GEX & 60m DX News, DL1SBF, DL7UXG & The DX News Letter, DxCoffee.com, DXNews.com, DX-World.Net, F5NQL, F6AJA & Les Nouvelles DX, HP1AC, I1JQJ/IK1ADH & 425 DX News, OZ6OM & 50 MHz DX News, PY3DF, Sixitalia Weekly, and VA3RJ & ICPO for the following DX information. Murray, WA4DAN, team leader of the 2020 Sable Island DXpedition, has received permission to make a one day trip out to the Sable Island National Park Reserve in preparation for the 2020 DXpedition to the island. This trip will take place on Saturday, October 19, 2019. Sable (CY0) currently sits at #58 on ClubLog. The purpose of this trip is to meet with the Parks Canada personnel on the island to go over logistical matters with the DXpedition. A priority during the 7-8 hours on the island include scoping out suitable locations for the antennas. There are over 500 wild horses on Sable and they have free run of the island. Care must be taken with routing the coaxial cables to the antennas. The team also must flag all antennas and guy wires as the island is home to many species of birds including the Ipswich Sparrow. Sable has a very fragile eco system so great care must be taken to not disturb any of the horses, seals, birds or vegetation. The 2020 DXpedition team is very grateful to Parks Canada for allowing the one day visit to develop guidelines in preparation for the 2020 DXpedition. DXCC NEWS. SV/A, MOUNT ATHOS (Will It Be Silent?). Last week OPDX was asked if Mount Athos will be silent. To start, when Kostas Stamatis, SV1DPI, reported the passing of Monk Apollo, SV2ASP/SK, he stated on his FaceBook page that "there are more monks who are radio amateurs in Mount Athos", but Monk Apollo "was the only one on the air from Mount Athos, working DX." Kostas also stated, "Ham radio will find another operator sooner or later from Mount Athos (according my infos, Monastery of Docheiariou will take care so another monk will become a radio amateur soon and get Monk Apollo's place and duties)." An interesting thing showed up this past week, your editor received his July issue of QST, and on page 80, it mentions that "Mount Athos will not go dark." Monk Iakovos, SV2RSG, who is located and lives at the Koutloumousiou Monastery is another operator. If you go to his QRZ.com page, it states, "I became Radio Amateur in 2015 after been trained by the DX Plus Hellenic Radio Amateur Team and George, SV1RP, who is member of the Team. I took and passed exams in the Ministry of Telecommunication. I am member of DX Plus Hellenic Radio Amateur Team and the only one member of RAAG in Mount Athos. Because my main QTH is Koutloumousiou Holy Monastery and I am permanent resident in Mt. Athos, I do not use "/A" when I operate because as everybody knows," /A" means Alternative location of the station." There are pictures of Monk Iakovos on the QRZ.com page. He operates CW, SSB and has been in contests. He reportedly has an an IC-735 and a 40 meter vertical. Currently, there have not been any cluster spots reported, but you may want to keep an eye out for some. His QSL Manager is SV1RP. The first location that is being announced and available now is Shapour Citadel in Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari Province. The bigger problem seems to be that the last years (Monk Iakovos) lived in a monastery outside Mount Athos, near Serres in North Greece..... What Monk Apollo used to say to me is that Mount Athos wants to be on the air, so if there is not a new operator soon, there is more hope for a DXpedition." T30, WESTERN KIRIBATI. Project planning continues on schedule. Corporate Sponsors -- A key component of any serious DX-pedition is the equipment. Joining our corporate sponsor team are: WiMo -- We are pleased to announce that WiMo Antennen und Elektronik Gmb, Herxheim, Germany, will sponsor the HF Yagi antennas by providing a complement of antennas from their EAntenna product line. Spiderbeam -- Returning as a sponsor is Spiderbeam GmbH, Spremberg, Germany. As with our previous DX-pedition projects, Spiderbeam will provide their line of high-quality fiberglass and aluminum telescoping masts. We are happy to again welcome Spiderbeam to another PDXG project. Tent Weekend -- Scheduled for July 12?15th, 2019, in Placerville, California, is our tent assembly project. Over 2,300 pounds (1,050kg) of WeatherPort extreme weather tents and supporting equipment was shipped to California from Illinois and Georgia. We appreciate the assistance from: Don/N1DG, Craig/K9CT, Bob/K4UEE and Rick/N4HU in making these tents available to our project, and Mark, KJ6EUO, for his assistance in receiving and storing the shipment in California. We will unpack, inspect, make any necessary repairs and repack the tents. To minimize island setup time, we will construct and ?kit? the tent bases/ flooring in California. Band / Mode Addition: We added 80m SSB to the operating plan. Fundraising -- Our fundraising campaign continues. The next payment to Braveheart is due in July and our shipping budget of $25,000(USDs) is tracking close to plan. As of this writing, 30 clubs / Foundations and 236 individuals have shown their support to the project. We have a long way to go in order to reach the goal of 50% team member funding of the estimated project cost of $325,000(USD). If you need South Orkney for an ATNO, or plan to work us, we would appreciate your help, expenses must be paid before we sail. Many of the current individual donors have supported our previous DX- peditions whether they needed the entity or not. We appreciate the con- fidence they?ve shown in our team, and invite others to sign on. Ham Radio Events: We enjoyed meeting many DXers at Ham Com Dallas, Friedrichshafen, Germany, and the Arizona ARRL State Convention, Prescott.
