SV/A, MOUNT ATHOS (Update to OPDX.1420). A couple of weeks ago OPDX was contacted by Kostas Stamatis, SV1DPI, and he updated/corrected details about Monk Iakovos, SV2RSG. He mentioned that Monk Iakovos does not have a license from the Holy Council to operate, so his QSOs are "NOT" good for DXCC. However, in the August QST (pages 65-67) there is an interesting article called "A Pilgrimage to Mount Athos" written by Peter Vekinis, LX1QF/KH6VP/SV0GV, where he states, "Monk Iakovos is currently the only one permitted to operator from Mount Athos.... Monk Iakovos is a SSB operator who wants to improve his CW knowledge.... he hopes to have a full Amateur Radio station set up by the end of 2019. He already has a donated IC-7300, small handheld transceiver, and a few other pieces of equipment. His biggest issue is that he has no power and needs to have a beam antenna and solar panels installed." OPDX has written to Kostas, SV1DPI, about the recent article and he stated that he cannot confirm whether Monk Iakovos has received a license from the Holy Council to operate. He did say that since Peter, KH6VP, is Greek, he also and possibly has better info. Kostas suggested to contact the DXCC to see if they are now accepting SV2RSG QSLs for Mount Athos. OPDX has sent an E-mail to ARRL Field Services and Radiosport Manager Norm Fusaro, W3IZ, to see if the SV2RSG QSLs are good for Mount Athos, but we have not received a reply back as of print time. All we can say WFWL (Work First Worry Later)... ADDED NOTE: Also in the August QST (pages 92-93) there is a excellent article written by Bernie McClenny, W3UR, called -- "Remembering Monk Apollo, SV2ASP/A, Mount Athos' First Ham". It contains details about the history of Monk Apollo, Mount Athos and how it got its DXCC status. T33T BANABA ISLAND DXPEDITION NEWS. Looks like this activity "may" take a little longer than expected. Dom, 3Z9DX, was seen reporting problems (on FaceBook https://www.facebook.com/groups/110389536041840/) with the 3 Icom IC-7300 radios that were used on the 3D2CR Conway Reef DXpedition. He states, "3 Icoms 7300 lost RX audio after been used on expedition for 10 days in high temp and very high humidity." Radios are currently at Icom Japan. ADDED NOTES. NO specific dates were announced yet. It is recommended to watch the T33T (Banaba Island) on the QRZ.com Web pages, the Rebel DX Groups Web and FaceBook pages for updates: https://www.rebeldxgroup.com https://www.facebook.com/rebeldxgroup Also, keep an eye on 3Z9DX tracker at: https://share.findmespot.com/shared/faces/viewspots.jsp?glId=0tARRAqk3ftzEN8piDb2UOWqGrnOX349o TR, GABON. However, Jerry will assume the role of our chief pilot and remain very much involved with the DXpedition. Our thanks to Jerry for what he has already contributed and for the role he is assuming. Allan, EA3HSO, will take Jerry?s place on the island. Allan is a budding new DXpeditioner with an exceptional skill set, team-orientated attitude, abundant energy, and a voice for Europe. He announced the following on his Web page (https://www.la7gia.com/where-next): [edited] For a long time I have been planning where to go next. This time I decided to return to Somalia which I also activated in 2018. I really look forward to this trip! Planning a trip to Somalia involves many limitations and challenges wrt obtaining permissions, logistics, operation as well safety & security wise. I have obtained the license 6O7O, and LoTW is already received by ARRL. I have a better QTH than last time, this time also with more space for beverages to NA/EU and Asia. Everything is booked and in place like accomo- dation, flight etc. I will be operating solo for exactly 14 days on all bands 160-10m using mainly CW. If possible also digi mode. If someone can send me an original Elecraft mic I might do some SSB as well... I will be using my upgraded Elecraft K3, 1 kW amplifier and various TX/RX antennas. 160m: toploaded vertical 80m/40m: fullsize verticals 30m, 17m, 12m: dipole 20m, 15m, 10m: My favourite 2 el Mosley beam RX antennas: 200-230m beverage to NA/EU and asia. PAUL ISLAND DXPEDITION NEWS (Press Release dates July 16th). [edited] In less than two weeks the CY9C DXpedition team will arrive in Dingwall, Nova Scotia, in preparation for the DXpedtion to St. Paul Island. The dates for the DXpedition are July 31st-August 8th. All seven team members are ready with gear packed and weighed to help facilitate an efficient process of ferrying the gear to the island via helicopter. The team is not employing a boat for this DXpedition as all operations will be from the Northeast Island. There are no longer any facilities for a boat to be able to dock at the Northeast Island with its foreboding cliffs and sharp rock formations that encompass the island. With that being the case, extra care must be taken to transport the generators and fuel by helicopter. Pat, N2IEN, the helicopter pilot, and helicopter mechanic Barry Smith, will supervise and oversee the loading of all gear on each flight. An advance team will fly to the island first in order to erect the operation tents. While that is taking place, the first of many chopper trips will commence with all of the other DXpedition gear. Hopefully the weather will cooperate and we have good VFR flying weather. On the 2016 CY9C DXpedition we had a number of very stormy days (and fog) where flights were not possible. Updates will be provided to the bulletins by Murray/WA4DAN or Randy/N0TG as well as at (www.cy9c.com). Phil, VA3QR, will again be giving updates and status reports on his blog which was very popular in 2016. 73, -- Murray Adams, WA4DAN FO & FO/A, FRENCH POLYNESIA AND AUSTRAL ISLANDS (Reminder). Project planning continues on schedule. Tent Weekend -- During the weekend of July 12th seven team members and three volunteers met in Placerville, California, to prepare the tents for use on South Orkney Island. Participating were team members: Dave/K3EL, Les/W2LK, Gene/K5GS, Steve/W1SRD, Walt/N6XG, Mike/WA6O, and Rob/N7QT. Volunteers Kevin/K6TD and Bob/W1RH helped with the preparation and Doris/K0BEE prepared meals for the three days the team was doing the work. Temperatures hovered around 100 degrees Fahrenheit (37C), much different than the next location where these tents will be deployed. These are the same tents that were used by VP8ORK 2011 South Orkney and, with a different configuration, KH1/KH7Z 2018 Baker Island DX- pedition. Kevin, K6TD, having previously assembled the tents on Baker Island offered his assistance to the team. We unpacked and inventoried all the parts, assembled the tents, and marked key components for faster installation on the island. The inside and outside of each tent were power-washed and treated with a disinfec- tant to avoid inadvertent introduction of non-native species. Flooring was constructed using approved materials, assembled and integrated with the tents. After this trial run the flooring was dis- assembled, power washed, and disinfected. Everything was packed and wrapped in waterproof tarps, ready for transport to our customs broker. Pictures of the weekend activities are at: https://sorkney.com/tent-weekend Band / Mode Addition -- We added 60m FT8 to the operating plan. Fundraising -- Team members made their 2nd payment to the project, and our 2nd payment to Braveheart was processed. As of this writing, 33 clubs / foundations and 273 individuals have shown their support for the project. While we?re making progress, we have a long way to go to reach the goal of 50% team member funding of the estimated project cost of ~$325,000(USDs). Please keep in mind, serious DX-peditions, especially those in the Southern Ocean, must pay the bills before leaving home, we are no exception. If you need South Orkney for an ATNO, or plan to work us, we would appreciate your help.
