On November 1st, the Great Lakes Division (GLD) amateurs were informed by Stan Arnett II, AC8W, GLD DXAC Representative, of the following [edited]: "Given the evident popu- larity of the new FT8 mode of communication demonstrated by the data collected in LoTW showing a seven figure increase in the number of monthly QSOs year over year resulting from the explosive adoption of the mode by hams worldwide, and the extremely high percentage (approximating 40%) of all QSOs being made with this mode at the current sunspot minimum. The DXAC is investigating the advisability, feasibility and desir- ability of creating or modifying one or more digital mode awards in the DXCC program to accommodate encourage and reward new modes of amateur radio activity on the bands. How do you feel? Should we: a) Create endorsement stickers for the existing Digital DXCC (i.e. RTTY-100; PSK31-100, JT65-100, FT8-100, etc with incremental stickers 125, 150, 200 and so on) b) Create a separate DXCC award for each mode c) Do nothing at all and leave new digital modes under the existing Digital DXCC. Are there other options? Your opinion is important so let Stan know at . Deadline for responses is Wednesday, November 14th." *** (ed.) A52BH BHUTAN CLOSED (Update/Dated November 6th). Martti, OH2BH, sent out the following from Thimphu, Bhutan [edited]: A52BH CLOSED DOWN 00.00 UTC MONDAY -- What a wonderful time it was with people of Bhutan. There is no doubt that these people care and make their visitors feel welcome. When I opted to stay here for an additional five days after my CQWW fellow operators had left, I did not know what lay ahead. Now I know that visiting my last Asian country was a very rich experience. It was no wonder that the late Gus Browning, W4BPD, stayed here much longer than normal during those other years. Radio wise, I set a quota of 1000 QSOs per day to reach the 5000 mark, which I did this morning at 19.00 UTC, with LA4LN being the last one. As the bands are closed for most of the daylight hours, this target gave me plenty of time to socialize with people; not only with locals, but also with a group of 23 American youth from Colorado, who arrived here and lived with me at the Royal Thimphu College (RTC). Openings to the U.S. were challenging, as every day was different from the others. On two days, I was able catch a good opening on 30M. Forty meters was the other band that helped me reach the U.S. The pileups were huge in those narrow windows with a multi-echo. Twenty meters was dis- appointing, as it did not open anywhere during my stay. I will have the QSOs on ClubLog upon my return home. On my way, there will be another stop-over - in Bangkok - to meet Champ, E21EIC. I would like to thank Zorro, JH1AJT, with the SEISA group for allowing me to use the A5A station and for sorting out those needed formalities, as entering Bhutan is not an everyday fiesta. Having Zorro???s endorsement and support made my stay one to be remembered. -- OH2BH C6, BAHAMAS. Rich, N0HJZ, will once again be active as C6ARW from Grand Bahama Island (NA-080) between November 20-27th. Activity will be on 30/17/12 meters this time using CW, SSB and RTTY, with low power and wires/verticals. Operations will also include the CQWW DX CW Contest (November 24-25th) as a Single-Op/All-Band/Low-Power/Assisted entry. QSL via his home callsign, direct (with sufficient postage) or by the Bureau. D4, CAPE VERDE. Jose, CT1BOH, will be active as D41CV from the D4C contest station on Sao Vicente Island (AF-086) during the CQWW DX CW Contest (November 24-25th) as a Single-Op/All-Band/High-Power entry. Jeff, WK6I, announces the following: The Greenkeys online group is happy to announce the first-ever "Green Keys Night" (GKN), to be held concurrent with "Straight Key Night" on January 1st, 2019, from 0000 to 2359 UTC. As with SKN, GKN is an event and not a contest. "Greenkeys" is not a reference to eco-friendly operating - though members certainly are keen on equipment recycling - but rather is a group dedicated to the restoration and use of vintage mechanical teleprinters and related equipment. The term "greenkeys" itself refers to the color of the keys on Teletype machines. Participants are encouraged to get on the air and simply make enjoyable, conversational RTTY QSOs. Operate on all authorized Amateur frequencies. Please follow established band plans and be mindful of SKN QSOs. RTTY modes only. Call "CQ GKN". The use of mechanical teleprinters is preferred, or simply get on the air with the oldest equipment you can scrape together. Real heavy metal Teletypes to be sure, but if that isn't available: analog hardware modems, VT100 terminals, pre-Windows computers, etc. And vacuum tubes. ;) And maybe fire up that boatanchor rig that never gets enough air time. Please no brag tapes/files. Please no pre-recorded messages. Have a real conversation by hand typing it keyboard to keyboard. If you are slow we'll happily wait. (A CQ macro is okay but you would have better bragging rights if you hand typed that too.) But even if you don't have any old equipment, do get on the air and have some fun QSOs the old fashioned way! E-mail to let us know you participated. There are no points scored, but if you'd like to share with us your favorite or most interesting QSO (worked or heard), your log, and what equipment you operated with (including photos), please do. Please note that there is a RTTY contest concurrent with GKN, the SARTG New Year RTTY Contest. The contest runs from 0800 to 1100 UTC. As long as you have your RTTY working why not join in the contest and then return to more GKN fun! (For info: ) The Greenkeys online group is an email list devoted to the discussion of older radio teletype (RTTY) gear including mechanical teleprinters (Teletype, Kleinschmidt, etc.), terminal units, paper tape, gears, cams, oil, and anything else related to TTY/RTTY. To join the group, visit . For more information, E-mail . And please do forward this announcement to your local club or interest group. IOTA NEWS.............. NA-004. (Update/Change on K6VVA/KL7 QRX'd) -- "After much serious deliberation of multiple factors, I have made a strategic decision to QRX my scheduled NA-004 activation until late Spring or early Summer 2019. The sub-freezing temperatures during mostly dark hours now in this 70+ Degrees North Latitude Polar Bear part of KL7 are not friendly to outside antenna repairs in the event of un- foreseen problems. And since propagation from NA-004 this month will be mostly on 40m, I also believe too many Little Pistol IOTA Chaser QSOs would not happen without availability of 20m as the primary band to all Geo-Areas. I am not looking forward to canceling all my plane flights, but believe this temporary QRX will benefit more of those who need NA-004 when the activation is rescheduled. This is a (QRX) postponement, and NOT a cancellation !!! 73, Rick - K 6 V V A * The Locust" OC-093. VP6D DUCIE ISLAND DXPEDITION NEWS (Update from Papeete, Tahiti, dated November 7th). -- WOW, what an experience. We arrived Papeete late Tuesday after an uneventful (but long) 4 hour flight from Mangareva, French Polynesia. The team is in good spirits, we've been receiving hundreds of e-mails sent by the DX community, thank you for the positive comments. Of course, we were disappointed to leave Ducie early, but when you see the video of our island departure we think you'll agree it was the right decision. There is no harbor at Ducie, Braveheart used different landing and extraction points based on the winds, tide and the seas. Safety is always the primary concern, and while it was not raining, changing sea conditions presented the crew with challenges to remove the team and equipment without incident. Our log management team in Europe have all but one log that contains 523 QSOs, we will send that file in the next day or so. Internet at our hotel is not robust enough to work the logs. Many of you have sent e-mail to our personal e-mail accounts and to the VP6D.com mailbox regarding busted calls and other log problems.. Those will be read and addressed beginning this weekend, it can not be done from Tahiti. We will spend the next 2 days relaxing and repacking our bags before the long flights home. Thanks for the the wonderful pileups, and thanks to the Braveheart crew that made this a safe and exciting DX-pedition for the team and the DX community. 73, Team Ducie 2018 All logs are now audited and on the server. Per their Web page, on November 11th, at 2200z, they made 112027 QSOs and 24969/Uniques. Planning on putting up Tribander for higher bands by end of year. Will be on 160 meters for most DX contests this year, but may do all band effort for ARRL contests. I work 90% CW, 10% SSB and 0% Digital. Was very active on Six meters CW earlier this year with a six element Yagi, conditions were excellent but CW activity diminished to almost nothing by the end of the season. Very Sad. I am grateful to Andrew, ZS2PA, who is allowing me to use his station for the upcoming CQWW DX Contest where I have access to a 3 element Tribander, a dipole for 40m and a low G5RV on 80m." -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- TO BE ADDED TO THE OPDX MAILING LIST -- Click or send requests to: Help: Subscribe: Unsubscribe: OPDX WORLD-WIDE WEB HOME PAGE (provided by John, K8YSE): http://www.papays.com/opdx.html NOW ON TWITTER: https://twitter.com/kb8nw_opdx ALSO VISIT THE NORTHERN OHIO DX ASSOCIATION'S WEB PAGES AT: http://www.nodxa.org/ http://www.facebook.com/NorthernOhioDxAssociation -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- * All excerpts and distribution of "The OPDX Bulletin" are granted as long as KB8NW/OPDX/BARF80 receives credit. ** To contribute DX info, please send via InterNet Mail to: OR OR Information can now be faxed to the following phone line at: 1-419-828-7791 (F A X only!) /EXIT -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Tedd Mirgliotta, KB8NW - E-mail addresses: Editor of the Ohio/Penn DX Bulletin (OPDX - DXer's Tool of Excellence) President of the "Northern Ohio DX Association" (NODXA) DX Chairman for the "Northern Ohio Amateur Radio Society ARRL Assistant Director of the Great Lakes Division Sysop of the "Basic Amateur Radio Frequency BBS" (BARF80.ORG) From kb8nw at barf80.nshore.org Fri Nov 23 09:59:00 2018 From: kb8nw at barf80.nshore.org (Tedd Mirgliotta (KB8NW)) Date: Fri, 23 Nov 2018 09:59:00 -0500 Subject: [DX] Ohio/Penn DX Bulletin #1391 Message-ID: SB DX @ WW < KB8NW $OPDX.1391 Ohio/Penn DX Bulletin No. 1391 The Ohio/Penn DX PacketCluster DX Bulletin No. 1391 BID: $OPDX.1391 November 26, 2018 Editor Tedd Mirgliotta, KB8NW Provided by BARF80.ORG (Cleveland, Ohio) Written/Sent from Strongsville, Ohio Thanks to the Northern Ohio Amateur Radio Society, Northern Ohio DX Association, Ohio/Penn PacketCluster Network, AB5K & the AR TelNet Clusters Network, NJ1Q & W1AW, NG3K & ADXO, W3UR & The Daily DX, K5GS, K8BL, K8GI, K8YSE, W8GEX & 60m DX News, W9ILY, DL1SBF, DL7UXG & The DX News Letter, DxCoffee.com, DXNews.com, DX-World.Net, ES1CW, F5NQL, F6AJA & Les Nouvelles DX, I1JQJ/IK1ADH & 425 DX News, I2MQP & DX Italia News, OZ6OM & 50 MHz DX News, RU6K, Sixitalia Weekly and VA3RJ & ICPO for the following DX information. ** EDITOR'S SPECIAL NOTICE: This week's bulletin was sent out earlier than normal to accommodate the late CQWW DX CW Contest announcements.
