Lance, W7GJ, reported last week of the following: I apologize for the delay in getting back to after posting the poll last fall asking for the "most wanted" locations for a 6m EME DXpedition.. I was dissuaded from Lord Howe Island and the Solomon Islands because I located other operators who are still hoping to activate those on 6m EME. I had hoped to activate T2, but after 5 months of waiting for a confirmation on an operating site there, I decided to move forward with an alternate location for this year. I know C2 wasn't even on the poll because at the time I felt it was too difficult and too expensive to pull off successfully. However, when T2 was not moving forward, I decided to put my energies toward making Nauru work anyway, since it is so rare on 6m in Regions 1 and 2. It is understandable why it is so rare. There are no longer any active hams there, it is expensive and difficult to get to, and it is very ex- pensive to stay there. On top of that, there are very few places to set up a serious EME operation. However, I think I have found what appears to be a very favorable operating site (although there are still unknowns regarding exact available antenna space, and local electrical noise) on the northeast corner of the island overlooking the ocean on moonrise. Because of its location, I will have moonrise at the same time as moonset in much of western Europe, and I should be able to work the rest of central and eastern Europe and Africa during their moonrise while I am elevated. My only common moon with Region 2 will be during my moonrise or while I am elevated. As usual, I will be posting a detailed planned operating schedule on my web site as soon as I can, but I wanted to get this formal announcement out as soon as I could. I had just been waiting for the VISA, license processing and airline tickets to be in hand before making a formal announcement. The details available so far are on my Web site here: http://www.bigskyspaces.com/w7gj/Nauru%202018.htm With the great increase in 6m digital activity using WSJT modes, I hope there will be many new 6m stations interested to try 6m EME on JT65A mode. Please read the instructions on the above web page to make sure you operate following the procedures I have outlined! I do expect to be able to access the internet on a regular basis, so will be updating my web page with status updates as well as stations worked. I will have trouble elevating above 50 degrees, so for best results, please try to catch me when my moon is lower than that. I also may try to operate some FT8 on 20m with the barefoot FT857 near the end of the trip after the optimum days for 6m EME operation have passed. GL to all, and I look forward to being able to hand out an ATNO with virtually every half million mile contact! More info to come..." C8T MOZAMBIQUE DXPEDITION VIDEO. [edited] Janusz Wegrzyn, SP9FIH, has won the 2017 Single-Operator Cass Award. -- Sponsors Add New Award -- "The Cass Awards encourage DXpedition operating excellence." While QRV from Palestine as E44WE during May 2017, Janusz worked 10,087 unique stations during 14 days of his one-man DXpedition, demonstrating an outstanding effort to log as many DXers as possible, and setting a new Single-Operator Cass Award record. Polish Amateur Radio Union President Waldemar Sznajder, 3Z6AEF, presented Janusz with his plaque at their LOS Convention on May 26, 2018. Here's a photo of Janusz (on the left) proudly displaying the plaque just received from Waldemar: low resolution : http://www.cassaward.com/SP9FIH_3Z6AEF_lowres.jpg full resolution: http://www.cassaward.com/SP9FIH_3Z6AEF.jpg "Two categories of Cass Award in 2018 and beyond" -- The Cass Award Sponsors ? Club Log, DXLab, and the Northern California DX Club ? have also announced the addition of a new "unlimited" award. Presented annually, the Cass Awards encourage DXpeditions to maximize the number of DXers worked with a plaque for the Single-Operator DXpedition that works the most unique callsigns during a two-week interval and, and a plaque for the "unlimited" DXpedition that works the most unique callsigns; the rules for each award are defined in . These awards honor the wisdom and spirit of Cass, WA6AUD (SK), whose stories in the West Coast DX Bulletin taught a generation of DXers that DX IS! Congratulations to Janusz on his achievement in winning the 2017 Single-Operator Cass award! CY0, SABLE ISLAND (Press Release: Behind The Scenes) [date June 9th]: The 2016 CY9C DXpedition team has been quietly working behind the scenes with Parks Canada attempting to gain permission to mount a significant DXpedition to Sable Island CY0. This effort began more than a year ago. For a number of years now, the Parks Canada policy has been to not allow overnight stays on the island. This was one reason the small team of N0TG, VE1RGB and WA4DAN mounted a one day DXpedition to Sable on September 8, 2014. Aaron, VA1AXC, who worked with Parks Canada, was active from Sable during his tours on the island. Last August, Aaron left Parks Canada and went back to work with the Canadian Coast Guard. Aaron was very instrumental in the months long negotiations. We had worked with Aaron during the CY0P DX- pedition in October 2013 as well as our one day CY0C operation. Our team donated equipment and antennas for Aaron to use while on Sable. Many email exchanges and phone calls were made between Parks Canada, Aaron and the CY9C team in an attempt to gain permission. The CY9C team sent a "Qualifications Package" to Parks Canada highlighting not only our general DXpedition experience, but our experience out on Sable Island. Many different scenarios were discussed and there was a lot of back and forth between Parks Canada and our team. There were times that per- mission seemed nothing more than a dream. It was very discouraging but we kept plugging away trying to stay positive. Finally, a couple of weeks ago, we received word from Parks Canada that we had been granted permission for a one week DXpedition in September 2019!! The 2019 CY0 DXpedition team will consist of 6-7 ops, mostly those who were on the CY9C team. Much more information will be forthcoming later this year and as we enter 2019. The 2019 CY0 team is already in the initial planning stage for this DXpedition. Sable is especially rare on CW and a big effort will be made to satisfy that demand. 73, Randy N0TG Team Co-Leader Murray WA4DAN Team Co-Leader E6, NIUE. KH1/KH7Z BAKER ISLAND DXPEDITION NEWS....... * The following Press Release #10 was sent out by Don, N1DG, on June 4th: Propagation Forecasts -- The 2018 DXpedition to Baker Island occurs during the declining side of the solar cycle where propagation is usually much, much worse, nearing the bottom: https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/products/solar-cycle-progression In addition, there are limited hours of darkness in some Northern Hemisphere locations. However, this is the when our permit is valid and we are planning to maximize the time we are available to work to propagation challenged areas. For instance, stations will be on 20 meters 24 hours a day. First, thanks to Stu, K6TU, we have embedded his tools in our website where you can run forecasts specific to your grid square and station properties. Please visit to see when and on what bands to look for us. We have also run these forecasts by geographic area to know when we should be listening for you. The forecasts are grim. However, stations on the Equator report working EU in June/July is one of the better times. During noon, local time, we don?t expect to hear any signals. We will mostly likely take our main meals during that time, and rest up, for a long night of pro- ductive QSOs. Remember, these are predictions ? like climate versus weather. Climate is what you expect, weather is what you get. Keep an ear on the bands ? you might catch an opening. Check the daily space weather forecast - Our network of worldwide pilots will also report how well we are being heard in your area to keep us abreast of propagation. Our permit restricts our antennas to 43 ft vertical antennas. We won't get the gain of a Yagi, nor the directionality. We will be using Steppirs and special design antennas to take advantage of the salt water ground. One of the antenna designs has been adapted by AA7JV from the recent 3B7A operation. We will be using FT8 to find openings we might not hear, and to serve as a beacon. When we find an opening, we will put as many radios/modes/ ops on as we can. Our group helped develop the latest WSJT-X software to incorporate a DXpedition fox/hound mode. Please download version 1.9.0 before we are QRV around 27 June. This may expand the bands we are able to use at this point in the solar cycle. We?ve also put a "how to use the new FT8" primer on our site. You can view it and our planned operating frequencies at . It will help those new to the mode to quickly master the new version. As previously mentioned, we will stay on 20 meters continuously and jump to other bands from one of the other 7 operating positions. Our 15 operators will rotate on and off in 3 hour shifts. We have one goal, maximize the number of ATNO QSOs with this 5th most wanted entity. All our equipment has arrived at the departure point. Our permit has been issued. Our callsign is set, KH1/KH7Z. All our plans for the past 11 months have led to this month! We are excited, and trust you are too. We are nearing the start of the operation, as the ops leave for Pago- Pago within the next two weeks. We still could still use your donation at this time. Thank you in advance for your support. On the ITU Web site and in "ITU Operational Bulletin (No. 1149 1.VI.2018)" [Information received by 16 May 2018], on page 7, the Secretary-General of the ITU reports the following: "Following the inquiry of the Administration of Serbia of 16 March 2018 regarding the use of Call Sign Series Z6 by amateur radio stations of Kosovo*, I would like to provide the following statement: Pursuant to Article 19 of the Radio Regulations, notably its provisions Nos. 19.28B and 19.33, the management of international series of call signs is a prerogative of ITU. Call sign series can be allocated only to the admini- strations of the ITU Member States by world radiocommunication conferences or, between radiocommunication conferences, by the ITU Secretary-General. In this respect, the attention of the ITU administrations is drawn to the fact that ITU has not allocated call sign series Z6 to any of its Member States. Consequently, the utilization of call signs series Z6 by any entity without a formal allocation and consent of the ITU represents an unauthorized and illegal usage of this international numbering resource. * This designation is without prejudice to position on status, and is in line with UNSCR 1244 and the ICJ opinion on Kosovo declaration of independence." https://www.itu.int/dms_pub/itu-t/opb/sp/T-SP-OB.1149-2018-OAS-PDF-E.pdf ADDED NOTES: The Z6 prefix does appears in the ARRL's "ITU Table of Allocation of International Callsign Series" which can be viewed at: http://www.arrl.org/international-call-sign-series However, the Z6 prefix does not appears in "Table of International Call Sign Series" -- [yet] at: https://www.itu.int/en/ITU-R/terrestrial/fmd/Pages/call_sign_series.aspx Z6, KOSOVO. It was announced that Max, ON5UR, is planning to be active as Z68UR from Kosovo for 9 days sometime at the end of September. The QTH will be near the border of Albania. Mark, KW4XJ, who is now active as 9L1YXJ from Freetown (WW Loc. IJ38jk), informs OPDX that his overseas assignment is for 3 years and he has been there for 9 months now. Mark operates mainly on CW and the Digital modes on the HF bands (40-10m). He adds that he [edited] uses an "ICOM IC-7300 running 100 watts, Chame- leon EMCOMM II end-fed wire antenna in an inverted L configuration, with a telescopic mast up about 25?, then the rest of the wire out horizontally to a convenient supporting anchor. I had to switch to the wire antenna as we have progressed into the rainy season, and we do get some rather strong wind gusts and monsoon rains here in the tropics. Before that I was using a Chameleon mil-whip w/extension. That worked very well but is a portable antenna. No way it could hold up to the storms this time of year. The wire antenna seems to be holding up well so far. I am going to be ordering an Elecraft 500 watt amplifier and electronic antenna tuner here shortly. I hope to have that delivered and installed in about a month or so. Right now I?m using a MFJ manual antenna tuner ? it works fine but after awhile it gets tiring and the lazy side of me wants to just hit a button to tune. :) With the sunspot cycle where it is I?ve only been able to make FT8 and CW contacts with just 100 watts. Sometimes PSK31 will work from here. I?ve made a handful of RTTY contacts. Usually CW and FT8 most of the time. SSB seems pointless after many attempted QSOs to Europe that were very marginal at best if we could get through at all. That is why I was thinking the amplifier would help. My CW skills are still pretty basic, I can reliably manage about 13 WPM on the air. I did do my first ever CW contest here recently for the CQMM DX. I made over 300 contacts which I thought was a decent showing given my relatively low power, rookie operator, and slow speed. I need to find another CW contest to try. I?m still relatively new at operating on HF. I?ve got a lot of unexpected, excellent advice from hams around the world ? the US, but also lots of help from the UK, Germany, Brazil, and Japanese operators. This is an amazing hobby. I?ve had FT8/JT65 QSOs from here in Freetown to the Falkland Islands, Iceland, Japan (lots of Japan on the long path), Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and the West coast of Canada, all with my modest setup." KH1/KH7Z BAKER ISLAND DXPEDITION NEWS....... * TOPBAND ADVICE BY GEORGE, AA7JV [edited]: Hello TopBanders -- The KH1/KH7Z will be active on 160m from Baker Island from June 27 to July 6 (note that dates are tentative and may change -- please visit ). Given the time of the year, KH1 is likely to be challenging for most. In addition to the less then perfect time of the year, we are limited to a maximum antenna height of 43 feet. But we do have a new antenna for 160 meters; we will stand it in the salt-water to maximize its performance. We will also have a couple of DHDL receiving antennas with high performance pre-amplifiers. In other words, we will do our absolute best to over- come the handicaps that we were dealt. Our TX frequency will be 1822.5 to begin with, and we will be listening up. NA stations should call above 1825.0 to avoid the stronger JA callers who are limited to below 1825.0. Our sunset will be at 07:45 UTC. We will be on the band at sunset to fully take advantage of the 1 1/2 hours of common dark- ness with the NA East Coast. During that time the sun will be still up in Japan, so we will be able to focus on NA and SA. West Coast stations will have more than 4 hours of common darkness with us, so they should have a decent chance of putting KH1 in the log. After the West Coast sunrise, from about 12:45 UTC onward, JA, UA0 and SE Asia, as well as ZL/VK, will have an exclusive shot at us. During this time we may move down to give the JA-s more room. EU will be,,, well ...difficult. We will stay on the air throughout each sunrise, working as far west as possible.... GL and CU, George, AA7JV * Don, N1DG, posted a photo on the KH1/KH7Z - Baker Island DXpedition 2018 FaceBook page on June 12th, stating: Our advance team has arrived in Fiji and today visited the Nai'a support warehouse in anticipation of loading the vessel in 3 days. When we arrive on the 26th at Baker we will immediately begin setup and expect to be QRV by our afternoon on the 27th (00:00 UTC 28 June). We will have 8 radios on all open bands 24/7 for the next 10 days. Our band plan is here: . But any plan is only good until you meet the enemy in the field of battle. We plan on listening to our pilots. Please tell them if we are missing an opening or opportunity. We can and will adjust to the propagation. VP6D DUCIE ISLAND DXPEDITION NEWS (Press Release #5, dates June 14th) [edited] -- The VP6D Ducie Island (OC-182) 2018 project is on schedule. At Visalia and Dayton we had the pleasure of meeting many of our supporters and equipment sponsors, including: DX Engineering, Elecraft, SteppIR and Arlan Communications (RadioSport headsets). Several of team attended Europe?s Ham Radio event conducted at Friedrichshafen, Germany, where we met with corporate, EU club and foundation sponsors, many EU DXers and other DX-pedition operators. Joining the Pilot Team is Mason, KM4SII, from Clemmons, South Carolina. Mason, an avid DXer, is 15 years old. In 2017 he operated from Iceland as TF/KM4SII, in July 2018 he will operate from Curacao as PJ2/KM4SII. Mason will work with NA and Chief Pilot Glenn KE4KY. Joining our list of corporate sponsors is Rig Expert Ukraine Ltd . Rig Expert is a recognized leader in the develop- ment, production and global sales of antenna analyzers, transceiver inter- faces, ARDF equipment and amateur radio software. Rig Expert donated 2 Model AA-55 Zoom antenna analyzers to the project. We appreciate the support of our corporate sponsors. Our current fundraising campaign is underway; you may see the progress at our website. We appreciate the donations and equipment support we?ve already received. Our final payment for the Braveheart is due on September 1st. Please keep in mind, boat/tent/generator DX-peditions incur similar expenses whether or not you make a contact. Team members have booked their travel to meet the Braveheart at Mangareva, French Polynesia. This is not a VP6D project expense; each team member pays travel expenses from personal funds. Financial transparency allows the major sponsors to better understand the costs associated with a DX-pedition and how we spend their money. Consistent with our previous DX-peditions, we will send club and foundation sponsors a VP6D financial summary. We need your help to keep our DX-pedition team?s personal investment to a reasonable level. Please consider making a donation at: vp6d.com Good luck to the KH1/KH7Z DX-pedition team, we?ll see you in the pile-ups. 73, Team Ducie ? 2018 Website: vp6d.com, Twitter and Facebook Please direct questions to: info at vp6d.com YI, IRAQ. We have moved to grid square AI25. With 600 nautical miles traveled, we have 345 NM to go. Our DeLorme Inreach beacon can be found on the Baker Island website and blog page : The purpose of this experimental Web site is to provide 24-7-365 actual (REALTIME) band condition information to CW QRPp, QRPe and CW/SSB for Contesters interested in increasing their scores. It can also be of benefit to other Radio Amateurs to determine band conditions for Nets and casual QSO's. This information is NOT based on any software pre- dictions or any kind of satellite based readings. It is based on a new Ionospheric sounding method called "HF Ionospheric Interferometry" which operates very similarly to the PolSAR system used by NASA.
