KH1/KH7Z BAKER ISLAND DXPEDITION NEWS....... * KH1/KH7Z continues to be active from Baker Island (OC-089) until July 7th. Activity is on 160-6 meters using CW, SSB, RTTY, and FT8. QSL via K4TSJ for direct mail. Also, QSL via ClubLog's OQRS for direct and Bureau QSLs. THE OQRS WILL BE ACTIVATED AFTER THE DX- PEDITION ENDS. LoTW upload for early individual donors will be about 10 days after the operation. For all others: Logs will be posted 3-6 months after the conclusion of the DXpedition. * The team landed on the island June 26th, and states, "Baker is brutal!.... The landing was not too bad but the island is an oven." * On June 29th, the following update was posted by Don, N1DG: "Good news. All but one station deployed. We are running up to 7 stations on all bands and making many QSOs after a weather related slow start. We hope to provide many ATNOs over the next week. We are now well over 10,000 QSOs, with great rates on CW, slightly slower rates on SSB, and FT8 has been effective. Please make sure to read our primer at on working us on FT8. The bad news is our BGAN terminal system for log uploading refuses to link up with the bird. We have two BGAN terminals on island and neither are correctly connecting to the satellite. We will continue to work to sort this out, but right now we can???t upload logs. The weather continues to be extremely hot and humid. But that is what we expected. Temps have been exceeding 110 degrees Fahrenheit during the day, and only drop to around 100 at night. This coupled with only two, 4-6 hr windows to access the island from the boat each day makes things challenging. Tomorrow we plan on constructing the 6 meter antenna. That???s all for now. Many people to work." * Also on June 29th, reports came out that some +12k QSOs were posted on ClubLog...... * On June 30th, the following update was posted: "For the first time since we got here, we have had all 8 stations on the air, and antennas are now up covering 6 through 160. Today was one of the few days without a storm. The weather should no longer be a factor, as the last 2 antennas have been deployed. We are still having issues with our BGAN but are uploading logs via SAT phone; a slow, and expensive way. The team has settled into a routine of 4-hour shifts. We are all tired, but happy to be on the radio and not building, or repairing things. The weekend is here and we are all looking forward to giving out many ATNO." * As of 0949z, July 1st, there are 38023 QSOs, with 11297 Unique call- signs. Breakdown by modes: 17022/CW, 11728/SSB, 627/RTTY and 8646/FT8. Breakdown by Continent: 32/AF, 18353/AS, 5505/EU, 12491/NA, 1509/OC and 133/SA. OX, GREENLAND (Reminder). The following was posted July 5th, on the 3Y0I Web page : WHEN NO NEWS MEANS GOOD NEWS -- We're in touch with DX Foundations we have applied to (eg. NCDXF, Indexa). We have received a big number of questions out of their application forms we had to answer to in details. We understand all of that, of course. The most recent project didn't succeed and they're simply cautious. Never- theless, this all takes a lot of critical timing to our project and we start to have an impression, we're not welcome there and whatever infor- mation we provide, our applications would be dropped, forcing us to reduce the number of participants. This is the bad news. The good news is that we are able to re-negotiate our vessel's contract to cut extra cost by 15k USD! We plan to run its inspection in person in Cape town in late July. We have also scheduled another cargo to RSA with a second part of our gear going to Bouvet Island. We also bear in mind security measures. Each participant of our expedition will land at the island while wearing a rescue drysuit to protect from cold and other unpleasant conditions. In addition, a professional CPR and first aid obligatory training will be provided to each of participant in prior of leaving Cape Town. We'll have a skilled paramedic on the board, too. Stay tuned for more news coming soon! The 3Y0I Team ADDED NOTE: On the "Rebel DX Group's" Web page, "one Rebel" member has posted their observation/opinion (long) about the "DXpedition Funding", and states the following, "The Ham Community at large has it ass back- wards and is being played." Members of the Nara DX Association are now active as V6J from the rare IOTA Ta Islands (OC-254) until July 31st. However, it was reported on July 20th, on QRZ.com: "You may have already noticed that V6J suddenly went to QRT last night around 14 GMT. V6J is operating from the island chief's property and one guard is watching the V6J operation site from morning till night. Since the guard has to go back home at night, the full midnight operation is impossible. Originally around the clock operation was planned, but V6J team has no choice but to accept the local rule. So the operation hour of V6J is between 22 GMT and 14 GMT. We hope you will understand the situation. Another obstacle is interference to the local radio equipment that runs on 8 MHz. Ta Island people communicate with other islands people twice a day using this 8 MHz radio equipment. The problem is that not only routine report is exchanged, but also the Ta Island people enjoy rag chew with the people on the other islands and sometimes the rag chew continues over one hour. We don't know when this regular communication starts. Since V6J gives the interference to the local telecommunication, when Ta Island people start the commun- ication, V6J has to stop the operation right away and all of sudden. In the worst case, V6J might be silent for over one hour." Activity will be on 40/30/20/17/15 meters as well as 6 meters. Operations will be on CW, SSB, RTTY and FT8 (frq. posted on QRZ.com). QSL via JP3ATQ, ClubLog's OQRS (recommended) or SASE. No Bureau or No LoTW please. Look for updates to be posted on QRZ.com. Z6, KOSOVO (Press Release). Martti, OH2BH, sent out the following press release from Cork, Ireland, on July 16th [edited]: KOSOVO, Z66X WITH EMPHASIS ON FT8 -- The Kosovo International Friendship Consortium, Z66X, will activate Kosovo once again beginning July 19 through July 30th with emphasis on FT8 Digital from 80m through 6m and utilizing the recently released DXpedition mode version 1.9.1, downloadable from: https://physics.princeton.edu/pulsar/k1jt/wsjtx.html (Please read for details on split operation). The operators are Enda/EI2II, Declan/EI9HQ, Martti/OH2BH, Hans/PB2T, Driton/Z61DX and Fehmi/Z62FB. With the success of their first FT8 activations; OJ0BH, 7Q7EI, Z61AS and recently KH1/KH7Z, it is felt that FT8 DXpedition mode needs some further activation also in Europe. Recent authorization of 6M in Kosovo will also add to this desire. So as not to impede on the normal FT8 traffic we will operate on the following frequencies: Band FT8 DXpedition Band FT8 DXpedition ---- -------------- ---- -------------- 80 3567 15 21091 40 7056 12 24911 30 10131 10 28091 20 14090 6 50323 17 18095 QSL Z66X via OH2BH via Clublog which will be on-line throughout the operation. We are delighted to announce that 'Kosovo - the World's newest DXCC entity' along with this Z66X operation will be presented at 'DX F?ile' - the EI DX Convention, by Martti, OH2BH (September 14-15th). [edited] VP6D Ducie Island 2018 DX-pedition (OC-182) -- Congratulations to the Baker Island KH1/KH7Z team. Under extremely poor propagation conditions they put on a excellent DX-pedition. They proved the value of FT8 DX- pedition mode and gave many ATNOs to the deserving. A hearty WELL DONE to the Dateline DX Association. The VP6D ? Ducie Island 2018 project is on schedule. As you may recall, VP6D will use the same Elecraft equipment as KH1/KH7Z. On July 20th the Baker Island radio equipment was returned to Elecraft for inspection, testing and refurbishing. Members of the VP6D team will drive to California the first week of August to prepare the equipment for ship- ment. We will ship the equipment to New Zealand on about August 15th. Team member Jacky, ZL3CW, will transfer the shipment to Braveheart. There's no question that the Baker team had considerable success with FT8. However, a large percentage of the callers weren't prepared for the challenges of this new mode. We ask everyone to please read the FT8 DX- pedition Mode Users Manual at: https://physics.princeton.edu/pulsar/k1jt/FT8_DXpedition_Mode.pdf It will be in everyone's best interest if callers use the most recent software version, correctly configure their equipment, call VP6D above 1,000 Hertz and in the correct sequence. If you are unsure of your con- figuration please seek assistance before calling. We plan to use Twitter and Facebook to keep the DX community updated on our progress by sending regular updates from the island. We want to thank Paul Ewing, N6PSE, and the Intrepid DX Group for the loan of a BGAN unit, giving us an additional Hughes 9201 unit. During our stay on the island we will collect soil and plant specimens for study by the National Antarctic Scientific Centre of Ukraine in their climate change research. The Pitcairn Island government issued a permit for the specimens to be collected and removed from the island. Our current fundraising campaign is underway; you may see the progress at VP6D.com. We feel fortunate to have received financial grants from 40 DX clubs / foundations and many individuals. At this writing we're at 68% of target with about 3 months before we sail. We anticipate additional clubs and individuals will help close the gap. The team is busily working on the project. We'll have some exciting announcements in future press releases. 73, Team Ducie ? 2018 Website: vp6d.com, Twitter and Facebook Please direct questions to: info at vp6d.com -------------------------------------------------------------------------- The following stations are expected to be active in the RSGB IOTA Contest (July 28-29th, 2018) For rules for the contest are available at: http://www.rsgbcc.org/hf/rules/2018/riota.shtml -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thanks to Bill, NG3K, for providing OPDX readers with the following consolidated listing of the participants in the 2018 RSGB IOTA Contest.
