We are now heading north to avoid the possibility of encountering ice. Currently, there is no ice in sight or on radar. In due time, we will head easterly toward Capetown. Our entire team is safe. Most are resting in their bunks and in good spirits. We will keep the amateur radio community and our families informed, as we continue our journey. Bob, K4UEE Ralph, K0IR Erling, LA6VM 1445 UTC: Position: 53 degrees 42 minutes South, 0.41 degrees West. Heading 58 degrees. Speed 7 knots. The wind is from 165 degrees and pushing us along in moderate following seas. Our ride is now considerably smoother than earlier, today. We did pass through some ice between 1200 and 1300 UTC. The sea is clear now. We are headed for Capetown, South Africa. This is the safest and most expedient course for us. We thank those who have expressed concern and good wishes. We are, of course very, very disappointed. We are slowed, but safe. On January 31st, at 0600z, the team announced that they have arrived at Bouvet! There was fog and freezing rain that greeted them. Later that day, at 1500z, Ralph, K0IR, reported: Bouvet Island came into view at about 0600 UTC today. We dropped anchor at 0810 UTC in approximately 25 meters of water off the east side of the island between Kapp Meteor and Swarthamaren. The temperature is 2 degrees Centigrade. Thirty five knot winds are blowing out of the northeast with a driving rain. Visibility and ceiling are estimated at 1 mile and 500 feet, respectively. We are poised and ready when our weather window arrives. Our first "strike" team selecting and securing a site will be EY8MM, K0IR and Alejo Contreras (Chilean Antarctic explorer, guide and mountaineer). On February 1st, at 1300 UTC: Ralph, K0IR, reports: Our ship is still at anchor off the east side of Bouvet. Winds are 35 to 40 knots, and the ship is pitching and rolling up to 30 degrees. This makes flying and a landing attempt impossible today. The temperature is hovering at around 0 degrees C. Visibility has improved. We are poised and ready when a weather window opens. We had our maritime mobile station up for a few hours, but had to take it down again to avoid damage caused by the extreme motion of the ship. Hang in there with us! AND THEN THE UNTHINKABLE HAPPENS -- Valerie, NV9L, posted the following on FaceBook: On February 3rd, at 2000z, During the last 72 hours we continued to experience the high winds, low clouds, fog, and rough seas that have prevented helicopter operations since our arrival at Bouvet. No improvement was predicted in the weather forecast for the next four days. Then, last night an issue developed in one of the ship's engines. This morning the captain of the vessel declared it unsafe to continue with our project and aborted the expedition. We are now on our long voyage back to Punta Arenas. As you might imagine the team is deeply disappointed, but safe. There is already talk about rescheduling the DXpedition. Richard Moseson, W2VU, Editorial Director of CQ Communications, Inc., sent out the following on January 31st: Beta-Testing for Bringing CQ Magazine's WAZ Award together with ARRL's Logbook of the World is On-going -- Beta testing for bringing CQ mag- azine's Worked All Zones (WAZ) award program into ARRL's Logbook of the World (LoTW) system has been underway since mid-December and is continuing to move forward, according to officials from CQ Magazine and ARRL, the national association for Amateur Radio. Some problems in the implementation were discovered by testers and have since been corrected; the documentation has also been improved by feedback from the testers. In parallel, the LoTW server has been executing a back- ground task that creates and populates a WAZ account for each LoTW user. Beta testing will continue until this background task completes. When all WAZ accounts have populated, LoTW-WAZ will be made available to everyone. The goal is for amateur radio operators to be able to directly submit LoTW confirmations for WAZ credit. Standard LoTW credit fees and separate CQ award fees will apply. Logbook of the World is ARRL's electronic con- firmation system for amateur radio contacts. It provides a confirmation when both stations in a contact submit their logs to the system and a match between the logs is confirmed. LoTW has supported the CQ WPX Award program since 2012. CQ Communications, Inc. is publisher of CQ Amateur Radio magazine and is the world's largest independent publisher of amateur radio magazines, books and videos. Worked All Zones is the second-oldest active award program in amateur radio, behind only the International Amateur Radio Union's Worked All Continents award. ARRL , a noncommercial organization of radio amateurs, has a proud history of achievement as the standard-bearer in amateur affairs. ARRL's underpinnings as Amateur Radio's witness, partner and forum are defined by five pillars: Public Service, Advocacy, Education, Technology, and Membership. CR3, MADEIRA. We will listen UP to all others. It is important to highlight that such frequencies are preferable, but may be changed by depending upon several reasons (e.g. QRM, local noise, etc...) PP1CZ will be the one responsible for uploading logs at ClubLog. If you wish to clarify any issue related to log, please address your E-mail to PP1CZ: pp1cz at terra.com.br XX9B Team is committed to contact all ham ops in the pile-up, but for several reasons, we know that it may not be possible. So, please, bear in mind that we will do our best to get you, but BE PATIENT! If we restrict calls to some places, that will be done in specific time frames when propagation uses to be opened to such places. Please, be polite, respect it and wait for your time. DXpeditions are far from honeymoons. A couple of unexpected issues arise, no matter how cautious you have been. Therefore, we encourage you to foster your ham spirit and comply with the simple guidelines of the DX Code of Conduct . Finally, we are proud to welcome PY5KD - Luciano who joined the team last month and will be instrumental for the success of this DXpedition. We thank you for your gentle and valuable attention 73, XX9B DXpedition Team Z6, KOSOVO. DXCC newest entity continues to be very active on the bands to celebrate its entry on the DXCC list and celebrating Kosovo's 10th anniversary of independence (February, 2008). Wayne, N7NG, sent out the following press release on Wednesday, January 30th and February 2nd [edited]: * January 30th: PROJECT GOODWILL KOSOVO IS MOVING INTO ITS 2ND WEEK ? ONLY TWO WEEKS UNTIL THE ACTUAL 10TH INDEPENDENCE ANNIVERSARY WEEKEND A new team of G3TXF, IK0FVC, K9JF, VE7NY, DL3DXX, DL5CW and DJ5IW will be at work soon with three radios again as they lost one that had to be replaced. In total, hams from 10 countries will participate in the project's current phase. Last Sunday marked a wonderful and memorable reception honoring the recent DXCC status of the Republic of Kosovo. Speeches were made by the SHARK president Vjollca, Z61VB, Kosovo's regulator (ARKEP) Chairman, Kreshnik Gashi as well as ARRL Honorary VP Jim, K9JF, and IARU's R1 Secretary Hans, PB2T. Their remarks were complemented by words from Project Goodwill's Kosovo coordinator, Martti, OH2BH. All were emotionally touched by this long march of 10-years, further enhancing the original U.S State Department recognition in February, 2008, while now saluting Kosovo's official entry into the DXCC world on an equal basis. On the radio front, the 40,000 QSO mark has been passed as the team is concentrating on maximizing its Asia and North America numbers. They are well on their way by penetrating those selective openings. Be patient, as their best effort is given at all times in spite of the high noise level. As the locations are fixed, the only improvement opportunity is to see whether low-laid receiving antennas would help with this mission. The second week team will try to accomplish that task as they move toward the upcoming weekend. Many are asking about an immediate LoTW upload during the operation, and these options are being taken under consideration. An LoTW upload and early QSL card may be considered as an additional service, while its modest compensation would be exclusively directed to further support for evolving Amateur Radio in Kosovo. The project members are thankful for the local Z6-team and the OH, OZ and S5 guys, who did a great job in building up the sites and handing out the many new counter contacts. Happy DXCC week was passed with best of amateur radio. * February 2nd: LATEST ON REPUBLIC OF KOSOVO Currently three (3) stations are up and running with DL3DXX, DL5CW, DJ5IW, IK0FVC and VE7NY at the helm. The activation is now up to 50,000 QSOs logged: https://secure.clublog.org/charts/?c=Z60A#r The first Z60A activation will culminate with the actual day of Kosovo's 10th Independence anniversary, Sunday Feb.18, 2018, with extended fes- tivities, which will include the international amateur radio delegation. On same weekend the ARRL DX Contest (CW) is running, and the visitors will team up with the locals to wrap up the project and salute the ARRL and U.S contesting community with Z6 now being accepted for all ARRL awards and contest programs. As the Kosovar amateurs have suffered for the past ten-years with limited opportunities and sometimes with the pirate label, it is now noted that with the new DXCC status, DXers the world over have taken a positive step forward to close the 10-year gap and welcome the Kosovar hams with open arms to our great community. Kosovar hams are much taken by this gesture, and the project group has organized to move forward on turning potential help to the best of Amateur Radio in the Republic of Kosovo. The weekend of February 10/11 will be a showcase of locals as they will now take the microphone and put the Z60A on the air accordingly: Z61DX, Z61VB, Z63DBB and Z62FB will be at the controls for a 20M showing, both CW and SSB. Kan Mizoguchi, JA1BK, has stepped forward first and shipped a brand new Yaesu FT450 to Dona, Z63DBB (YL), so that she will be able to carry-on with her home-based activity. With Z61DX and Z62FB suffering with the Pristina high noise level, RemoteRig (SM2OAN) has donated two pairs of the remote control units so that a clean receiving site can be established outside of the capital Pristina. The European DX Foundation (EUDXF) has stepped forward, and their monetary support was presented to SHRAK, the Kosovo IARU member society. The Yasme Foundation has released an extensive series of ARRL publications to the SHRAK HQ library at the Technical University of Pristina. If any of the U.S persons and/or clubs would like to extend their help to Kosovo, please contact Wayne, N7NG at . ENHANCED QSL SERVICE FOR Z60A OPERATION NOW UNDERWAY. The ClubLog OQRS system is set to cover the cost of direct QSL postage ? USDs 3.00, while also allowing voluntarily, private contributions. All donations small or large are most welcome to support SHRAK, the Kosovo Amateur Radio Association to aid in recruiting additional Kosovar youth and to activate the existing Amateur Radio operators and support their activities. As many have requested confirmations during the ongoing activation, it has been decided to do an immediate LoTW and fast direct QSL service for those who contribute USDs 20.00 or more. This option would not delay any of the traditional QSL options, but just put a priority on those who are willing to help Kosovo Amateur Radio finally move beyond the past ten difficult years. If you wish to upgrade your earlier QSL request to this enhanced service you can send your donation through the ClugLog: https://secure.clublog.org/make_donation.php?call=Z60A On behalf of the Project Goodwill Kosovo, Martti Laine, OH2BH -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- TO BE ADDED TO THE OPDX MAILING LIST -- Click or send requests to: Help: Subscribe: Unsubscribe: OPDX WORLD-WIDE WEB HOME PAGE (provided by John, K8YSE): http://www.papays.com/opdx.html NOW ON TWITTER: https://twitter.com/kb8nw_opdx ALSO VISIT THE NORTHERN OHIO DX ASSOCIATION'S WEB PAGES AT: http://www.nodxa.org/ http://www.facebook.com/NorthernOhioDxAssociation -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- * All excerpts and distribution of "The OPDX Bulletin" are granted as long as KB8NW/OPDX/BARF80 receives credit. ** To contribute DX info, please send via InterNet Mail to: OR OR Information can now be faxed to the following phone line at: 1-419-828-7791 (F A X only!) /EXIT -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Tedd Mirgliotta, KB8NW - E-mail addresses: Editor of the Ohio/Penn DX Bulletin (OPDX - DXer's Tool of Excellence) President of the "Northern Ohio DX Association" (NODXA) DX Chairman for the "Northern Ohio Amateur Radio Society ARRL Assistant Director of the Great Lakes Division Sysop of the "Basic Amateur Radio Frequency BBS" (BARF80.ORG) From kb8nw at barf80.nshore.org Sat Feb 3 17:15:00 2018 From: kb8nw at barf80.nshore.org (Tedd Mirgliotta (KB8NW)) Date: Sat, 03 Feb 2018 17:15:00 -0500 Subject: [DX] Ohio/Penn DX Special Bulletin #1349.1 Message-ID: SB DX @ WW < KB8NW $OPDX.1349.1 Ohio/Penn DX Special Bulletin No. 1349.1 The Ohio/Penn DX PacketCluster DX Special Bulletin No. 1349.1 BID: $OPDX.1349.1 February 3, 2018 Editor Tedd Mirgliotta, KB8NW Provided by BARF80.ORG (Cleveland, Ohio) Written/Sent From Strongsville, Ohio Thanks to the Northern Ohio Amateur Radio Society, Northern Ohio DX Association, Ohio/Penn PacketCluster Network, AB5K & the AR TelNet Clusters Network, and NV9L for the following DX information. 2000 UTC 3 February 2018 During the last 72 hours we continued to experience the high winds, low clouds, fog, and rough seas that have prevented helicopter oper- ations since our arrival at Bouvet. No improvement was predicted in the weather forecast for the next four days. Then, last night an issue developed in one of the ship?s engines. This morning the captain of the vessel declared it unsafe to continue with our project and aborted the expedition. We are now on our long voyage back to Punta Arenas. According to the Web page , operators Dominik/3Z9DX, Stanislaw/SQ8X, Leszek/SP3DOI, Branko/YU4DX and Frans/J69DS have rebooted their plans to activate Bouvet Island. They state, "Our trip originally planned at the end of 2017 was canceled at the request of the organizers of the '3Y0Z' expedition. Due to the cancellation by the organizers, we are now returning to the implementation of our project and preparations for our trip as a matter of urgency." No dates are mentioned on the Web page, but "DX-WORLD.net" states that they "received info from a Norwegian contact that the 3Y0I license has been renewed. A landing permit has also been issued by the Norwegian Polar Institute. No dates of activity are mentioned, but the permit is good until February 2019. However, DX-World contact suggests activity could be sometime this year." The expedition plans are as follows per the Web page: How? -- For the purposes of the expedition, a 24-m-high seagoing yacht with a PowerSail sails and 2 engines of 250 HP was chartered. The unit is adapted to move in extreme weather conditions. During the stay on the island, before the bad weather, we will be protected by proper construction of expedition tents. Where? -- Our expedition will start in South Africa, from where we will sail to the Bouvet Island. We will cover over 2,800 nautical miles in the far South Atlantic. It's over ... 5200 km! After landing on Bouvet Island, we will install a camp and shortwave radio on the glacier plateau (it covers 93% of the island's surface. In good weather, we will get Olavtoppen - the highest peak of the island rising 760m above sea level. When? -- Our expedition will take place during the sub-antarctic summer in the Southern Hemisphere. A sea journey in stormy conditions ? will take about 12 days one way. If the weather is favorable for us, we will spend about two weeks on the island. With successful winds, the expedition plan will close in about a month and a half. Stay tuned for further details........ 3Y0Z BOUVET DXPEDITION NEWS (From 3Y0Z Web page). On February 5th, the captain of the MV Betanzos decided that it was the best interest of safety and expediency to proceed directly to Capetown, South Africa, rather than Punta Arenas, Chile. They also headed north to avoid the possibility of encountering ice and then headed easterly toward Capetown. The entire team was reported safe resting in their bunks and in good spirits. It was reported on Thursday, February 8th, at 2045 UTC: 49.32 degrees South, 6.73 degrees East. 1,058 nautical miles from Capetown. We are continuing our slow voyage to Capetown, currently making 6 knots, with one of our two engines out. The team is healthy, with plenty of food and water, and working to keep our spirits up. We cannot, however, escape the cloud of disappointment hovering over us and the DX community. We traveled 2700 nautical miles to Bouvet, but the last mile proved to be the most difficult. As we type this, a tugboat is on its way to assist our vessel to the port of Capetown. We will continue to keep everyone informed, as this saga plays out. We would like to thank all of our friends and families who have been with us every mile of the way. Your good wishes, thoughts and prayers have sustained us over the last three weeks. The ARRL posted the following on February 9th, on their Web page: ARRL this week announced a Mobile DXCC Operating Award available to radio amateurs who have contacted at least 100 DXCC entities from a working vehicle with antennas and power source capable of operating while in motion. ARRL Radiosport Manager Norm Fusaro, W3IZ, advised those pursuing the award to put safety first. "Distracted driving is a serious concern, so we hope all mobile operators exercise care when operating from a moving vehicle," he said. During this time he will be joined by Yves/FK4RD and the two operators will active two other islands [Lifou (OC-033) and Mare (OC-033)] as FK/JG1XMV. Exact schedule for Lifou and Mare will be provided later on QRZ.com under FK/JG1XMV. He intends to stay 3-4 days on each island, but the exact timing has not been decided as it is typhoon season and they will be weather-dependent. Operating conditions will most likely be a vertical with 100w or less. Arnaud will be working SSB mostly between 40-15 meters. Given what the HF conditions are at the moment, they will do their best but are not expecting fabulous conditions. Hopefully, they will get some interested stations throughout Asia and Asia Pacific. Maybe they will get lucky via LP towards Europe as well. NA tends to be a bit touch-and-go depending on where they operate from, but fingers crossed, they hope for a few QSOs in the log. Arnaud may try to activate a few SOTAs, but since his time on Grande Terre will be limited and since he will be traveling with his family, he thinks that at this stage the probability is fairly low. [edited] VP6D Ducie Island 2018 DX-pedition (OC-182)-- Joining the team is Vadym, UT6UD. An active DX-peditioner, he has operated as H44UD, A35UD, S21XV, FO/UT6UD from Austral and Marquesas Islands, FG/UT6UD. He was a member of the 2016 VK0EK DX-pedition to Heard Island. Many will recognize Vadym from his 160 activity. We're happy to announce that 6 meter EME was added to the project. With planning support from Lance, W7GJ, and the 6 meter community, we hope to make the first ever 6m EME QSOs from Ducie Island. We're working with several amateur radio equipment manufacturers and suppliers who indicated interest in supporting VP6D. Onboard already are Arlan Communications for RadioSport headsets, DX-Engineering for antenna and other supplies and GM0OBX Custom Cables offered their support. We're in the process of formalizing agreements with other manufacturers. The logistics plan is coming together. Our equipment will be consolidated in Fremont, California, for testing, packaging and shipment to the Brave- heart in New Zealand. The team has a group reservation for our flight transportation from Papeete to Mangareva and back. Braveheart will pick us up in Mangareva and return us there at the end of the expedition Detailed antenna plans are coming together nicely with 2-element vertical dipole arrays on the high bands backed up by a couple of horizontal beams, 4-squares on 30 / 40 meters and verticals on 80 / 160 meters. The 160 receiving antenna plans are under development. With the cost of DX-peditions to remote islands increasing each year, we kicked off our fund-raising campaign with a generous grant from the Northern California DX Foundation, quickly followed by other DX clubs and foundations. We appreciate the individuals who are supporting the project with their donations. A current list of all donors is available at: vp6d.com VP6/D continues to be ranked in the top 25 Most Wanted, now at #21. 73, Team Ducie ? 2018 Website: vp6d.com, Twitter and Facebook Please direct questions to: info at vp6d.com WWII PACIFIC ISLANDS TOUR. If you wish to upgrade your earlier QSL request to this enhanced service you can send your donation through the ClugLog: https://secure.clublog.org/make_donation.php?call=Z60A On behalf of the Project Goodwill Kosovo, Martti Laine, OH2BH (Reminder by N7NG) CLARIFICATION OF THE Z60A LOTW UPLOAD TIMING: The complete Z60A log will be uploaded approximately four weeks after the current activation. "Now less than 700 miles to Capetown!! Seas are starting to be friendly again to make 6+ kn.. 73 de Hal W8HC" LATEST FROM THE REPUBLIC OF KOSOVO (February, 11th). The weather has been warming up in Kosovo lately and is currently above the freezing mark. Many are wondering why it isn?t possible to eliminate the noise by setting up camp in the quiet open field. The underlying fact is that Pristina is more that 650m above the sea level, and this winter has been particularly cold with -13C temperatures experienced during the acti- vation period. There are prospects in place for the final and upcoming week to operate from a better place. Driton, Z61DX, has been testing the location and reception is dramatically better than at Z60A. Considering that Kosovo will stay on the DXCC map and that this is the very first activation, not all noise and other challenges are expected to be resolved. However, a remote location for RX/TX is underway and the first tests may be done this week. Bill, AA7XT, has donated an XR9 antenna to this application and it is now used at a temporary location by Z61DX - soon to be moved to the remote site. The project seeks a reasonably priced pair of second-hand TS590 rigs for remote implemen- tation. Please contact N7NG or OH2BH. The purpose of this first activation was to bring in delegates from as many countries as possible. This helps Kosovar hams in expanding their network of friends into many interesting countries ? something that had not happened over the past years of ?none? status. During this coming week Toivo, ES2RR, will boost the number of delegate countries to ten (10). The departing German/Slovenian team of DJ5IW, DM5TI, DD2ML and S57AW did a fantastic job while introducing the data modes (RTTY & FT8). They made up to 10,000 digital QSOs (some 4000 in the WPX RTTY) , with the Z60A project total now reaching 70,000. Driton, Z61DX, and his brother Agim, Z61AS, were also QRV all day Saturday on FT8 as a result of the past week?s work by Ulli, DD2ML, and others. During this RTTY weekend the SHRAK HQ location was exclusively activated on 20M SSB by locals: Z61VB, Z61FF, Z62FB and Z63DBB. The DX community has been generous to their fellow hams in Kosovo. All donations are temporarily marked for SHRAK needs and will be managed by the Yasme Foundation directors Martti, OH2BH, and Hans, PB2T, together with Pertti, OG2M, and SHRAK president Vjollca, Z61VB. The ?early LoTW with fast paper QSL? concept will continue to March 15th, 2018. Thanks also to Jyri, OH2KM, for managing all related data operations. The final jubilee week is now starting. An international delegation will participate in the ceremonies celebrating the 10th anniversary of Independence. In addition, they will give out new DXCC contacts to those who still have an ?ATNO? need and be active in the ARRL DX CW contest. The team includes Z61DX, ES2RR, OG2M, OH1MA, OH2BH and others. It was reported on the 3D2EU Web page [edited]: We regret to inform you, that Tony (3D2AG) will be not with our team on Rotuma, because of unforeseen work commitments. Our prepar- ations are on schedule and in one week our team flies from Frankfurt over Singapore to Nadi. After a short stay in Nadi we will fly on Feb. 23th, with a small Twin Otter to Rotuma. And then... We will look for you in the pileup. Few other sources are reporting that the team will now only operate from one location instead of two. Also, the team will not be operating on 60m due to Tony's absence (no permit). Reported on February 14th, at 1645 UTC: We continue our slow pace toward Capetown. We are currently making 5.6 knots and are 293 miles from Capetown. We are showing 2 days and 5 hours until we reach Capetown. The weather is pleasant. Our seabirds have decreased in number since we left cooler waters. Recently, a pod of Orcas passed by, and the bridge spotted a whale. Those were the highlights of the day. There?s not much left for us to do. We have one /MM radio to occupy the 20 of us. It?s a bit difficult to arrange and confirm our flights home and to prepare for Customs/Immigration in Capetown without the internet, but we are managing ? sort of. Thanks again to everyone and the good wishes we encounter on the air. The ?dit-dits? are appreciated. 73, Ralph, K0IR Reported on February 16th, at 1320 UTC: ETA at Capetown harbor is 0930 on Saturday morning. We understand that immigration and customs will come aboard at 1700, and we will likely be cleared to depart the vessel. DAP has us all booked into a local hotel near the waterfront. On Sunday, there will be a reception held at a local yacht club sponsored by a local radio club and numerous DXers. We are very much looking forward to that and are certainly honored. The first of the team will begin departing for home on Sunday night, and the majority will be on their way Monday evening/early Tuesday morning. A few more will straggle out and be on their way home on Wednesday. When we depart the vessel on Saturday, that will be our 31st day aboard the ship. Needless to say, we are ready to set foot on dry, un-moving ground once again. Ralph and I are very proud of this team. They have endured many hardships since departing home in early January. They have been patient and resilient and good company. There will be more updates in the future, as we begin to unravel this attempt and plan our subsequent strategy. 73, Bob, K4UEE ADDED NOTES: Remember to visit the team's media pages (Twitter, Facebook) as well as their Web page to read updates, see pictures and videos of their trip: 3Y0Z Web page: http://www.bouvetdx.org/news-and-updates 3Y0Z FaceBook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/639362206232014 3Y0Z Twitter : https://twitter.com/Bouvet_3Y0Z Also remember to follow their voyage by watching the following URL links: https://share.garmin.com/bouvet http://www.marinetraffic.com/en/ais/details/ships/shipid:777230/mmsi:725000291/imo:7310923/vessel:BETANZOS#IrjZAqtjXemvHHQW.99 4U0, AUSTRIA. [edited] The 2018 DXpedition to Baker Island is proud to commemorate the 81st anniversary of Amelia Earhart's disappearance on July 2, 1937, near Baker & Howland islands, as well as the commitment and sacrifices made by the Hui Panala?au students from Hawaii, who lived on Baker, Howland and Jarvis from 1935-1942. Not many people know that these "Hui Panala?au students" were unsung heroes. They were part of the American Equatorial Islands Colonization Project, which helped establish Baker, Howland and Jarvis as legitimate US territories by forming settlements on Baker and Howland. The settlement on Baker was named "Meyerton", after Captain H.A. Meyer of the US Army, who helped establish the Hui Panala?au camps in 1935. "Itascatown", on Howland Island, was named after the USCGC ship "Itasca" which transported the students to the islands from Hawaii. Some of these young men lost their lives during the simultaneous attacks on Pearl Harbor & Baker-Howland-Jarvis on December 7-8th, 1941. There is a strong connection between Earhart's trip around the world, and these Hui Panala?au colonists. The students helped build the landing strip on Howland for Earhart's arrival and were waiting to welcome her on both Baker and Howland. Itasca was anchored at Howland and was in constant communication with Earhart as she made her final approach to Howland, but then disappeared presumably in the vicinity of Baker-Howland, which are only 40 miles apart. From some reports, a few students were also on the Itasca during those final hours. Our DXpedition not only honors Earhart, often cited as a role-model for young girls because of her independence, persistence, and courage, but also recognizes the important role the brave young Hui Panala?au students played in US history. KH1 is the 5th most wanted entity. Our plans are to bring the KH1 entity to as many operators, and countries as we can. We hope adding these historical elements to our adventure makes it more interesting and enjoyable to our audience and raises awareness of our hobby in the general public. As with any DXpedition to the really rare ones, this will be another large budget operation. The operator team will contribute over 50% of the expected budget of $400,000. You can help make this DXpedition happen by visiting our website and contributing today. http://www.baker2018.net/pages/donate.html Thank you in advance for your support. LATEST FROM THE REPUBLIC OF KOSOVO (INITIAL OPERATION CLOSING DOWN). Pristina, Kosovo - Monday morning, February 19th, 2018 ES2RR, OG2M, OH1MA, OH2BH and Z62FB left Pristina and crossed the Albanian border at 2PM today on their way to their Albanian homes. They plan to work on antennas at ZA1EM and ZA1F tomorrow before finally heading to their respective countries on Wednesday. They left a piece of their hearts, and left their Kosovo operating sites in intact for their return over the weekend of the ARRL DX (SSB) Contest in two weeks. The first Kosovo activation resulted in 81,478 QSOs with 26,487 individual callsigns. Of the total number of QSOs, some 22% (17,876) were from North America and 10% (8255) were with DXers in Asia. Europe was obviously dominating with 66% (53,725) QSOs. Delegates from ten (10) different countries were part of the initial activity. They returned home with many fond memories of this now 10 year old Republic, which was finally granted DXCC status on January 21, 2018. The festivities surrounding Kosovo???s 10th anniversary were warm and memorable. The entire country - particularly the capital Pristina - were the party grounds, with the main street full of people listening to the open-air street concerts, featuring the famous British singer Rita Ora, a Kosovo native. The evening was cold - below the freezing mark - but the warmth of the occasion overrode the cold February night at 650 meters above sea level. In the comfort of the city center, the Government of Kosovo offered a memorable reception and luncheon marking Amateur Radio???s past ten years toward this memorable day. Martti Laine, OH2BH of Project Goodwill Kosovo and Hans Blondeel-Timmerman, PB2T of the International Amateur Radio Union were personally awarded plaques commemorating their support in making this day happen. Kosovo???s good name is now carved in stone, and many Kosovar voices will continue to penetrate the radio spectrum. A new DXCC counter was born! Please kindly look at your QSOs in Club Log and at QRZ.com (Z60A). In the case of errors, please allow the group look at problems and correct them accordingly. For a next three weeks, errors will be worked out and the log will be entered into Logbook of the World (LoTW). Early donors will receive their direct QSL cards with others to follow immediately thereafter. Thank you for being part of the first (Z60A) Kosovo activation. -N7NG ------------------------------------------ Z68M, KOSOVO. Mome, Z32ZM, informs OPDX that the next two weekends in Feb/March he will be active on all HF bands 160-10 meters using all modes (CW, SSB, RTTY, FT8 and JT65). This will be a ONE MAN DX activity. Mome tells OPDX, [edited] "I have had this licence for a few weeks earlier, but didn't wanted to interrupt & mix-up with the SHARK's Z60A celebration and activity." QSL via ClubLog's OQRS is strongly recommended for direct and Bureau QSL cards. However, for those who wish direct QSLs, but don't have PayPal, Mome is OK on QRZ.com (https://www.qrz.com/db/z32zm) and PLEASE USE ONLY WHITE ENVELOPES (Air-Mail envelopes are still target of post office robbery here in Macedonia). QSL cards for this operation will be printed after this activity with logos & callsigns of main sup- porters via My PayPal address . Another, bigger activity from Kosovo is planned for later this year and lets hope that by then 6m - 50MHz will be allowed for HAM Radio use. For sure, that will be a BIG PLEASURE for all of us ...... in any case: STAY TUNED ON SIX !" -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- TO BE ADDED TO THE OPDX MAILING LIST -- Click or send requests to: Help: Subscribe: Unsubscribe: OPDX WORLD-WIDE WEB HOME PAGE (provided by John, K8YSE): http://www.papays.com/opdx.html NOW ON TWITTER: https://twitter.com/kb8nw_opdx ALSO VISIT THE NORTHERN OHIO DX ASSOCIATION'S WEB PAGES AT: http://www.nodxa.org/ http://www.facebook.com/NorthernOhioDxAssociation -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- * All excerpts and distribution of "The OPDX Bulletin" are granted as long as KB8NW/OPDX/BARF80 receives credit. ** To contribute DX info, please send via InterNet Mail to: OR OR Information can now be faxed to the following phone line at: 1-419-828-7791 (F A X only!) /EXIT -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- -- Tedd Mirgliotta, KB8NW - E-mail addresses: Editor of the Ohio/Penn DX Bulletin (OPDX - DXer's Tool of Excellence) President of the "Northern Ohio DX Association" (NODXA) DX Chairman for the "Northern Ohio Amateur Radio Society ARRL Assistant Director of the Great Lakes Division Sysop of the "Basic Amateur Radio Frequency BBS" (BARF80.ORG) From kb8nw at barf80.nshore.org Sun Feb 25 11:59:00 2018 From: kb8nw at barf80.nshore.org (Tedd Mirgliotta (KB8NW)) Date: Sun, 25 Feb 2018 11:59:00 -0500 Subject: [DX] Ohio/Penn DX Bulletin #1353 Message-ID: SB DX @ WW < KB8NW $OPDX.1353 Ohio/Penn DX Bulletin No. 1353 The Ohio/Penn DX PacketCluster DX Bulletin No. 1353 BID: $OPDX.1353 February 26, 2018 Editor Tedd Mirgliotta, KB8NW Provided by BARF80.ORG (Cleveland, Ohio) Sent/Written in Strongsville, Ohio Thanks to the Northern Ohio Amateur Radio Society, Northern Ohio DX Association, Ohio/Penn PacketCluster Network, AB5K & the AR TelNet Clusters Network, ARRL Letter/Web, NJ1Q & W1AW, AA3B, NG3K & ADXO, W3UR & The Daily DX, K8GI, K8YSE, W8GEX & 60m DX News, W9ILY, WE9V, K0BBC, DL1SBF, DL7UXG & The DX News Letter, DxCoffee.com, DXNews.com, DX-World.Net, E73Y, ES1CW, F5NQL, F6AJA & Les Nouvelles DX, G3SWH, I1JQJ/IK1ADH & 425 DX News, I2MQP & DX Italia News, OZ6OM & 50 MHz DX News, Pete Rayer & ISWL, Sixitalia Weekly, SP6DVP, VA3RJ & ICPO, YL2GM, YT3W and Z32ZM for the following DX information. As always, you never know - "Work First Worry Later". 3B7A ST. BRANDON ISLAND (Press Release #6, dated February 23rd). In about a month we will reach Saint Brandon. This year of work to prepare the project was intense and we are impatient to see it finally materialize. Our 700 kg of equipment is currently in transit to Mauritius. They will then join the generators and the fuel stock on the boat for a departure to Saint Brandon on April 3rd with two members of the team. The other operators will take a second boat on the 5th of April. This solution allows us to secure the transport of people and equipment, throws some limits too constraining weight, and provides some redundancy in case of problems. This of course has a cost but it seems essential. The "pre-team" will be in charge of equipment transit operations, ident- ification of installation sites of stations and antennas. If time permits, some elements will of course already be put in place, so as to save a lot of time when the rest of the team will join them. So we will potentially be on the air pretty quickly, but no QSO will be done until the entire team is on site. You could discover a page dedicated to propagation forecasts on our website. You will find the best times / bands to contact us depending on your location. This type of schedule will be installed on each station and will guide our traffic completely. Priority will be given system- atically to the most difficult regions with the shortest openings. We reproduce the organizations that we set up in Tromelin (FT4TA) then Juan de Nova (FT4JA). These are 5 stations that are totally identical and capable of working in all modes that will be available to the 8 operators. We will make sure that we use a maximum of them simultaneously, primarily at the most important times around our sunrises and sunsets, also optimiz- ing the mandatory rest phases. In order to meet our objectives, we have decided this year not to carry an 6m antenna, as we know that conditions are unlikely to be favorable. There will be no 6m EME activity. Finally, since the question was also put to us, know that we will not be active on the band of 60m which is not part of the bands authorized on our license. Also remember if necessary that it is not a destination with "regular flights and hotels all inclusive" ... From the outset of Mauritius we will have everything to manage: loading / unloading operations, energy manage- ment and generator sets, food, maintenance, etc. All this will undoubtedly add a lot of work and fatigue in addition to the hours of traffic. Once again, rest assured of our greatest motivation, we look forward to contacting you! Continue to support us from our website and follow us on Facebook and Twitter . 3C1L/3C0L VIDEO AVAILABLE. Yuris, YL2GM, posted on YouTube.com a video of his (along with Kaspars/YL3AIW) recent Equatorial Guinea (3C1L) and Annobon (3C0L) DXpedition (October 9th-November 12th, 2017). Looking into more details on the 3Y0I DXpedition to Bouvet Island, their Web page points out specific goals the 3Y0I team wants to archieve: * To be the very first Polish expedition to the subantarctic island of Bouvet * To make radio contacts with amateur radio enthusiasts from all over the world with our ham radio expedition * To geographically explore the island, including reaching the island's highest peak, Olavtoppen (760m a.s.l.), which is 93% covered with an ice cap * To photo and video document their cruise and stay at the island including documentation for the Norwegian Polar Institute and their Sponsors * Place a "time capsule" at Olavtoppen * Bouvet is ranked #2 on the DXCC Most-Wanted List, and thousands of hams around the globe on all continents are waiting for a chance to make a radio contact with Bouvet since the island was last heard on the air over 10 years ago * Thanks to Bouvet's unique and demanding location, their 3 week long cruise on stormy seas and ability to broadcast live from the island, their expedition will become a world-wide event across Polish and international media Look for the 3Y0I team plan to update more details and news on their Web page as well as FaceBook and Twitter. No specific dates have been announced for the 3Y0I DXpedition, but they state it will take place during the sub-antarctic summer in the Southern Hemisphere. BREAKING NEWS (Their Web page posted the following update on February 24th) [edited]: Once we rebooted preparations to our expedition, there are new, better ideas and breakthrough possibilities emerging. We also received a big number of questions, suggestions and comments from hams all over the world to which we wish to respond with our latest important news. -- A new vessel ? new possibilities -- Apart from our expedition yacht, we've managed to secure bigger ex- pedition vessel at really bargain rates. The vessel will secure trans- portation of team members and all the equipment to the island. The vessels' crew is experienced in troop landing at Bouvet and other sub-antarctic islands. Our cruise plan doesn't change; we'll depart from and sail back to Cape Town, which will reduce time and cost involved to possible minimum. We will publish dates of our expedition shortly. The bigger vessel will also allow to take a bigger amount of team members and payload without increasing the cost of our project. The landing pro- cedure will be supervised by landing troops and will utilize special boats that will allow the team to transport our gear and to land at the island safely. Our preparations to the expedition are taking place in extraordinary times and under unusual conditions. As we informed previously, our initial plans to go to Bouvet in late 2017 were suspended after receiving a kind request from the 3Y0Z's organizers. Bearing in mind their commitment, devotion and big budget they were forced to sacrifice while aborting their expedition, we took a breaking through decision, which ? we hope ? will find an acceptance not only of the 3Y0Z Team but also among hams waiting for Bouvet's ATNO all over the world. -- The invitation -- Hereby, we ? as the organizers of the 3Y0I Bouvet Island Expedition ? invite the team of the 3Y0Z expedition to join forces and to participate in our common project. The common project that will also allow to make their initial plans coming true. Our decision is also caused by a fact we are fully aware and full of sympathy of their disappointment as the organizers followed by public opinions following the failure and can- cellation of their plans. Thanks to joining the projects, we'll be able to reduce cost of our common venture as well as we'll be able to bring Bouvet Island on the air under better conditions with more benefits to the ham radio society. Our unprecedented decision opens not only new fantastic opportunities, but is also a proof that our plans are driven by the Ham Spirit and will of cooperation, not division. Looking forward to cooperation and bringing Bouvet island on the air ? together. The 3Y0I Bouvet island Expedition 3Y0Z BOUVET DXPEDTION NEWS.
