Look for activity to be on 160-10 meters using CW, SSB and RTTY. Suggested fre- quencies were listed in OPDX.1355. QSL via F5CWU (direct or by the Bureau), ClubLog's OQRS or LoTW. For more information, see: http://www.saintbrandondx.com Support them from their Web site: http://www.saintbrandondx.com/how-to-help-us Follow them on Facebook and Twitter . The latest update (April 7th) as reported on their Web page states[edited]: "The South island exceeds so little of the horizon that it is necessary to wait for the last moment to discover how beautiful it is when the boat approaches it finally. It was mid-afternoon yesterday, so we finally reached Flo, F5CWU, and Pasal, F5PTM, arrived earlier with the first boat trip. After a 26 hours boat ride, we were also very happy to have a meal before continuing immediately. Our two friends of the 'pre-team' had already set up all the VDAs and the 30m Four Square. We took ad- vantage of the last hours before the night to install the 40m Four Square. We also hoped to complete the installation of the 160m antenna to start during the first night, but the wind decided otherwise. At the end we installed the stations during the night and began operating just after. Despite the fatigue of the first day, the operators took their turns all night long and more than 3000 qso were in the log early in the morning. For this new day, the installations of the remaining antennas were resumed, while maintaining a maximum of active stations. The setup is now complete for both transmission and reception. The rythm will now be fully reached. Regarding the island, it reminds us Tromelin and Juan de Nova very much, both in terms of fauna and flora. Based on these previous ex- periences, we have been able to avoid disturbances for birds as much as possible, and select the right areas for the antennas. Many terns incubate their eggs and toddlers barely open their eyes. It really looks like heaven. We are fortunate to share the island with Mauritian fishermen friends who are very willing to give us a hand, and even share the results of their catch. With this first communication also comes the first online log. We ask you to make this expedition a success by providing helpful infor- mation to our pilot stations. Let?s get the party started!" Richard Moseson, W2VU, Editorial Director for CQ Communications, Inc., sent out the following on April 2nd [edited]: ARRL and CQ Magazine Announce Launch of CQ's WAZ Award Support on ARRL's Logbook of the World Officials from CQ magazine and ARRL, The national association for Amateur Radio?, are excited to announce the launch of support for CQ magazine's Worked All Zones (WAZ) award program on ARRL's Logbook of the World (LoTW) system, effective Monday, April 2, at 10:00 a.m. EDT (14:00 UTC). The goal of the project was to create the proper technical support system to enable amateur radio operators to submit LoTW confirmations for WAZ credit and that has been accomplished, say CQ and ARRL officials. "We are very pleased that participants in CQ's WAZ award program will now be able to use their LoTW confirmations for award credit," said CQ ditor Rich Moseson, W2VU. "CQ WPX Award participants have found it very helpful and we are sure it will be equally helpful for those pursuing WAZ and its many variations." ARRL First Vice President Greg Widin, K0GW, concurred. "Users of LoTW have been telling us for some time that they would like to use QSLs from LoTW to apply for the WAZ award. They will now be able to select confir- mations to be used for WAZ credit." Beta testing for bringing CQ magazine's WAZ award program into ARRL's LoTW system had been underway since mid-December. Any problems in the implementation discovered by testers were corrected by the technical support team. Also, the documentation has been improved by feedback from the testers. At the same time, each LoTW user was given an additional WAZ account. Standard LoTW credit fees and separate CQ award fees will apply. Logbook of the World is ARRL's electronic confirmation system for amateur radio contacts. It provides a confirmation when both stations in a contact submit their logs to the system and a match between the logs is confirmed. LoTW has supported the CQ WPX Award program since 2012. ADDED NOTE: Also, check out the ARRL press release on their Web page at: http://www.arrl.org/news/view/lotw-support-for-cq-worked-all-zones-waz-award-goes-live CR3, MADEIRA. PAUL ISLAND DXPEDITION NEWS (Cancelled). Randy, N0TG, informs OPDX on April 3rd: "The DXpedition scheduled for August 1-9th, has been cancelled. After considerable analysis and discussions as to expected band conditions, the 'need-list' ranking significantly greater than 50, and in order for the team to achieve our goals for maximum Q's and ATNO(s), DX'ers would be better served if we postponed the DXpedition. VP6D DUCIE ISLAND DXPEDTION NEWS (Press Release # 4). For Immediate Release -- April 16, 2018 -- VP6D Ducie Island 2018 DXpedition (OC-182) We are now in the implementation phase of the project; equipment is being consolidated in Fremont, California. Customs brokers in the USA and New Zealand have been selected, and the New Zealand Government issued us an import / export license to ship the equipment to and from the country. Manufacturers and distributors of amateur radio equipment are critical to the success of DX-peditions to rare entities. We are happy to have received significant support from DX-Engineering. They have furnished coax cable, guy ropes, a 40 meter four square system, coax connectors, ground anchors and other accessories. DX-Engineering has been a long time supporter of our projects and many other DX-peditions to rare entities; we very much appreciate their continued commitment to the hobby. Joining our list of corporate sponsors is SteppIR Communications Systems. We will add to our antenna lineup two 2 element Yagi antennas. These antennas proved to be indispensible during our TX3X Chesterfield Island project; we?re happy to have them for VP6D and appreciate SteppIR?s ongoing support. A Garmin InReach Satellite Communicator will be used during the DX- pedition. You will be able to follow our journey on the web, details to be announced. This handheld unit also provides 2 way SMS messaging similar to that of a traditional mobile phone, and one way messaging to Twitter and Facebook. We will use this technology to communicate with family, the pilot team and to update you via social media, as required. We?ll also have an Inmarsat BGAN terminal for log uploads and e-mail with the pilot team. Our budget for this project is ~$175,000(USD). Our current fundraising campaign is underway; you may see the progress at our website. We appreci- ate the donations and equipment support we?ve already received. With the final payment for the Braveheart due on September 1st, the next most expensive line item is equipment shipping budgeted at $20,000. Please remember, we have to pay these expenses whether or not you make a contact. We need your help to keep our DX-pedition team?s investment at a reasonable level. You may help by donating at: vp6d.com Members of the VP6D team will be attending the International DX Con- vention, Visalia, California April 20 ? 22, 2018. We hope to meet many old friends, and make new ones at the convention. 73, Team Ducie ? 2018 Website: vp6d.com, Twitter and Facebook Please direct questions to: info at vp6d.com -------------------------------------------------------- VK9X, CHRISTMAS ISLAND. Z60A KOSOVO NEWS (FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, date April 15th). Z60A DIRECT QSL MAILING -- Following the LoTW upload of April.01, the first Kosovo, Z60A QSL card arrived in the U.S. during the past week to 92-year old Frank, K4BVQ, allowing him to reach the DXCC sticker #385. Former INDEXA president Gary Dixon, K4MQG made a special personal delivery, delighting Frank, a serious DXers and supporter of the DX segment of Amateur Radio. Following this special delivery, all U.S. direct requests, whether ClubLog or through direct mail will be released locally in San Francisco at the end of this week. The donor QSLs for the rest of the world are in process, while other direct requests will start surfacing during the week of May.01. The card is a 4-page full color affair, giving a detailed description of this unique mission. DX is not simply collecting LoTW points. The QSL card is also an ed- ucational piece aimed at the wide world and the issues behind the radio contacts. Better yet, you may meet three representatives of the Z60A activation; Vjollca, Z61VB, Jim, K9JF and Martti, OH2BH at the Visalia DX Convention over the weekend of April 20/22 and hear their fascinating stories. Of course our very first priority has been to give news to our family after 2 weeks without any exchange. The team is quite tired after such an intense adventure, but we are very satisfied. After months of preparation everything goes as planned, result of so much work and a flawless organization. Of course, we will study statistics in detail, but we are quite satisfied by the overall results. Many have been able to log Saint Brandon as a new DXCC. Other people have filled one or more bands/modes slots. Our team was quite small with only 8 peoples, for a short duration of 10 days, managing food, maintenance, and the radio, better say immediately we haven't slept much! We knew propagation was not at his best and it has been confirmed on the air. All days were different giving various openings. High bands only gave propagation to Europe, Japan and Africa. The final repartition of QSO is the perfect reflect of this reality. Our efforts oriented to the most difficult areas helped to balance the different percentage by continent. From a global point of view, Europe and Japan had the best conditions on all bands. Regarding America, we had not to miss any opening and pay a very special attention to maximize chances. This was one of our main priority. Daily information from our pilot?s stations helped us to adapt our strategy and identify some short openings with VK-ZL or SA for example. We have received so many emails from you. All of them confirm your satisfaction, thank you so much for these kind words. Like for every expedition a few of them mention too fast cw, too slow cw, too much rtty, not enough ft8, missed openings, etc. The most interesting comments will be part of our debriefing and will help us to improve our strategies for any possible future project. We have now left Saint Brandon with the confidence of the ?accomplished mission?, accordingly with our announced objectives. After Tromelin and Juan de Nova we have now discovered another great island. ?L?ile du Sud? is home for very important wildlife in the Indian Ocean. We have been lucky privileged spectators during these few days: Turtles, Macoua, Sternes, rabbits, etc. We gave a very special attention so our mission does not disturb wildlife at all by choosing carefully the location of each antenna or cable, watching at each move around the island. Our previous experiences have been a great advantage. We have also met some interesting people on the island: coast-guards, fishermen, a globe-trotter. Then, certainly the most important point, the team has been incredible one more time, working like one man, with countless effort from the first to the very last minute. The human experience has been outstanding and will remain in our memories. None of us imagine a final end of our team, but this will certainly be another story... Our first thanks are of course for our families for their continuous support. Thanks to all of you for your personal of clubs/foundations donations, they are a condition to make such projects possible. The quality of the equipment provide by some sponsors also had a major role to provide strong signals, reliable setups corresponding with our needs. The SunSDR2 pro by Expert Electronics have really been a game changer for us. All the team get familiar with them very easily and we cannot imagine a new project without them, associated with our Modmics provided by PileupDX they were just perfect. The antenna parts was one more time supported by Spiderbeam. The different RX systems were by DXengineering, Low Band Systems and Batima. Then everything was connect by our lightweight high performance coaxial cables by Messi and Paoloni. Special thanks also to: F6AGM, LU5FF, ON9CFG, N6PSE, JJ3PRT, F8DQL, F4DSE, DX AVENUE, K6TU, VOACAP, QSL Concept, Raphael Fishing, E-Sat, for their support. This final version of the Log has now being uploaded on clublog as well as the complete photo album of the expedition. OQRS will soon be open so you can request your QSL card. We strongly recommend to use this system for you direct or buro request, we don?t need your paper cards. LOTW will also be uploaded in the coming weeks. 73?s de F5UFX Seb, for the entire team. 3B7A QRT, VA 3B8, MAURITIUS. To the DX Community..... There have been several important milestones reached and decisions made in the last few weeks. We have received a partial reimbursement on our payments made to DAP, our transportation contractor. In our view, this it is a fair settlement with them. Our vessel, Betanzos is now back in Punta Arenas and we believe the container with our personal gear and equipment are intact. We will be arranging to transport the container back to the US, arriving in a few months. It has become apparent that the chance of finding a suitable and afford- able vessel for the 2018-19 Austral season is becoming less and less likely. It appears that the very earliest that we could mount a second attempt to activate Bouvet would be the 2019-20 season or possibly beyond. Thus, we have made the decision to offer a pro-rata return of the remaining 3Y0Z DXpedition funds in our account. This will occur only after the container has arrived here and we have paid all our bills. Only then, will we know the net balance to be distributed. As you may have concluded, this is going to be an enormous task with 137 DX Clubs and Foundations and 3700 individual DXers. The process will take some time. We ask that you be patient as we complete this. You will have the choice of a pro-rata return of your contribution, or you may designate a foundation or club to receive your contribution. Any ?unclaimed? refunds will be proportionally distributed to the major con- tributing foundations. Later this year, we will explain the way to claim your refund. After the return of the funds is completed, we will close the accounting books and the bank account of 3Y0Z. This is always our procedure as each DXpedition must stand on its own. We believe this is the proper way to wrap up the DXpedition. We all are unhappy and extremely disappointed that the project was not completed due to a mechanical failure on our vessel. This left the Captain no choice but to abort the mission for safety reasons. Please accept our team?s heartfelt thanks for your outstanding support of this project. 7Q, MALAWI. Following a successful Visalia DX Convention, the KH1/KH7Z team met in Cupertino this week to assemble the stations and network in preparation of landing on Baker in 2 months. The DXpedition is now in the final planning stages and this step was the last before packing and shipping our gear to Fiji. Stations -- DXpedition sponsors Elecraft and DX Engineering provided the required gear. There will be 8 stations on Baker Island consisting of 8 Elecraft K3S transceivers -- 7 powered by KPA500s; the 8th low band station powered by a KPA1500 amp. This is the first expedition to use a KPA1500 and the team and Elecraft are looking forward to seeing this exciting new amplifier in action. There will be 3 separate tents for CW, SSB, and Digital stations. Co-leaders K6TD and N1DG, and AA7A, K6GFJ, K6MM, ND2T and N6MZ assembled the stations, activated the BGAN satellite network, interfaced the NUC computers & monitors, and installed N1MM+ in a complete on-island simu- lation (including generator power). We also successfully simulated making QSOs and uploading sample logs to ClubLog via the BGAN. The network was designed by our IT team led by AA7A and N6MZ and consists of rapidly deployed transit boxes containing the switches power hubs and POE repeaters. Upon reaching the island the team will deploy these cases and run out cables from the central CW tent to SSB and Digital tents. All N1MM+ computers will be networked to our center administrative PC allowing 2 uploads daily via satellite to ClubLog to minimize duplicate contacts. Antennas -- Although limited to 43 feet, our 80 and 160 meter antennas are newly designed AA7JV ?fat? verticals, which will sit just inside the high tide mark. The SteppiR verticals for 75 through 10 meters will also be mounted just inside of the high tide mark while four 2-element vertical arrays will be mounted away from the water for 15, 17 and 20 meters. In this way, we can maintain a 24-hour presence on 20 meters to maximize the number of unique callsigns and enable the most ATNO contacts. We also intend to install a multi-vertical array for 6 meters at the digital radios. Testing the SteppIRs and our own design of vertical arrays is all that remains before cleaning and sterilizing our gear to meet the FWS Biological Protocols and sending the gear to our freight forwarder. Please visit to see more pictures relating to our testing activity this week. As with any DXpedition to the really rare ones, this will be another large budget operation. The operator team will contribute over 50% of the expected budget of $400,000. You can help make this DXpedition happen by visiting our website, and contributing today. http://www.baker2018.net/pages/donate.html Thank you in advance for your support. The Baker Island 2018 Team OJ0, MARKET REEF (Reminder). Pasi, OH3WS, is once again active as OJ0W from Market Reef until May 4th. Activity will be limited to his spare time on 20-6 meters using CW and SSB. Pasi will try 60m on both CW and SSB, listen on 5354 kHz. QSL via OH3WS, by the Bureau or direct. PACIFIC TOUR (Update). Dave, WJ2O, has announced his plans to activate a few islands in the Pacific before and after he joins the KH1/NH7Z Baker Island DXpedition. I know on American Samoa I will sign simply KH8/WJ2O. With the group on Baker we are KH1/KH7Z. I have a homebrew vertical (that I haven't built yet) that will do 40, 30, 20, 17 and 15. I'm almost always 100% CW. Taking my usual beat up K3, but also my KPA500 so maybe I will be heard? I'm good with LoTW and you can go direct through Ken, N2ZN." PH00, THE NETHERLANDS (Special Event). Operators Tonny/PD1TV and Henri/ PA4HM will once again activate the special callsign, PH00GEVEEN, during the annual "Wings and Wheels" event which is held at Hoogeveen Airfield between May 5-22nd. Activity will be on various HF bands using SSB only. Ascension Day is on May 10th, this year. QSL via the Bureau or direct to the address listed on QRZ.com. For more details, see their QRZ.com page.
