FS AND PJ7 UPDATE (Update on Ham Radio in FS, Saint Martin, after Irma by John, K9EL). The single island of Sint Maarten (PJ7) and Saint Martin (FS) suffered a direct hit from Category 5+ hurricane Irma. Power, water, cell phone service was all lost. Those services are slowly returning to the island, but 90% of all buildings were damaged or destroyed. The airport (PJ7 side) was badly damaged and is not accepting most commercial flights. The Orient Beach area (FS side), popular with tourists and visiting hams, was severely damaged and could take 2 years to fully rebuild. There are currently two licensed amateurs living permanently in FS. Lionel, FS5PL, suffered antenna damage well over a year ago and has not been on the air for some time. We have not been able to confirm his personal status after hurricane Irma as his home sustained significant damage. Marco, FS4WBS, is alive and well. He was able to remove his antennas before Hurricane Irma but will not re-install them until after hurricane season has ended. His home only suffered minor damage. His business suffered more damage but without tourists, his business is essentially non-existent. His restaurant is providing food to islanders who have none. John, FS/K9EL, visits Saint Martin often and was planning to host a multi-op activity in December for contests and 160 meters. Unfortunately John?s villa received significant damage in the hurricane and the December operation of FS/K9EL, FS/K9NU, FS/W9ILY and FS/W9MK had to be cancelled. John plans to return to the island as soon as it is appropriate for non-residents to do so. FY, FRENCH GUTANA. WRTC 2018 e.V., organizer and host of the World Radiosport Team Championship (WRTC) 2018, is proud to announce the 63 teams that will be invited to compete in Germany next July. WRTC is a competition among two-operator teams. Team Leaders have now been selected for each qualifying region based on 2 years of qualifying contest scores. The Team Leaders were given the option to select any operator as a Team Mate to complete their team. The team application and verification process was managed by Ulf Ehrlich, DL5AXX. Ulf pointed out: "This will be a very competitive field. The top three teams of WRTC 2014 in Boston will participate once again in the 2018 event!" The five sponsored teams, all representing high level contesters, have already been announced some time ago. The selection of the Youth and Wild Card Teams required a more formal application process and, therefore, could only be completed recently. WRTC 2018 e.V. has received seven applications from Youth Teams, re- presenting contesters younger than 25. The selection was based on the number of qualification points, as defined in the rules. Team Leaders will be CE2MVF (9107 points), YO8TTT (7254 points) and HA8RT (5056 points). These results made it easy to decide in favor of the three Youth Teams invited to participate in the WRTC 2018 competition. Issuing Wild Cards has been an entirely different process. Similar to the approach taken by the organizers of the WRTC 2014 in Boston we have selected UN9LW (with Team Mate UN7LZ), who missed the qualification criteria by just 24 points. Honoring the cleanest log of high scorers ZL3CW (with F6BEE) was offered another Wild Card. Because of the close competition in region EU#5 featuring outstanding results another Wild Card was offered to 9A7DX (with 9A3LG) to join WRTC 2018. We also invited YV1DIG, performing excellently behind the curtain of zone 9 DXpedition stations. Finally we unanimously selected K1DG, chairman of the WRTC 2014, well known top level contester, and champion of the first WRTC in 1990. Not only did he do an outstanding job in Boston. By offering a Wild Card to him we also wanted to express our appreciation and thanks to all of the many fine people making WRTC 2014 in Boston such a great success. His Team Mate will be N2NT - 2014 Competition Director and number five in NA#1 with 10.6 k points. The complete list of competitors is available on our website: http://wrtc2018.de/index.php/en/competition/participants When making the announcement, WRTC 2018 President Christian Janssen, DL1MGB, stated: "We are pleased to see a mix of veterans of previous WRTC events and first-time participants among the competitors. The teams represent over 35 countries and a wide range of personal backgrounds. While the focus will be on the competition, we are looking forward to hosting the teams and celebrating a week of ham spirit together with competitors, organizers, volunteers and sponsors during the WRTC week." XW, LAOS. Ken, K4ZW, will once again be active as XW4ZW from Vientiane between December 3-8th. Activity will be on various HF bands, but with a focus on the lower bands and usually CW only. QSL via K1SE direct (with SAE/SASE). Log will be uploaded to LoTW and ClubLog. Ken states, "All Bureau cards received will be answered, but it is time consuming and expensive. Please note that I receive cards from the Bureau on average once or twice per year. It takes up to 1 year to answer the cards. You will need to be patient." YE, INDONESIA. The YE2A Team will be active during the CQWW DX SSB Contest (October 28-29th) as a Multi-? entry. QSL only LoTW. NO Bureau QSLs. Operators mentioned are Kei/YB0ARJ, Agus/YB1ALL, Yohanes/YB2DX, Dani/YB2TJV, Martinus/YB2LSR, YB2WA, Bagus/YB2WB, Thomas/YB3KM, Indra/YD2XVT, Joni/ YB9WZJ and Han/YD1SDL/2. QSL YE2A via LoTW. All tasks are going as scheduled. The logistical operations are going on and will soon be finalized. Transport to St. Brandon has been secured by a 50% deposit. It will be a 24h journey by boat between 3B8 and 3B7. Once on the islet, we'll use the small fishermen's building as radio shack rather than tents. For sure it will be much more confortable espe- cially with high temperatures. We are working to get a reliable 24/24 electricity supply by generators. We already started to test, and pack all our equipment in the crates previously used for Tromelin and Juan de Nova. Expert Electronics LLC provided us some of their famous SunSDR2 PRO transceivers. We already have tested this setup with success on Juan de Nova. Now, these SDR TRX will play a major role in our expedition. Thanks also to our regular corporate sponsors Dx Engineering, Messi & Paolini, Spiderbeam for their continuous support. We will give you more details about our setups soon. We already made important expenses and time has come to request assistance from the DX community. Last week, we have contacted many clubs and associ- ations who already supported us in the past. We are delighted to receive already positive answers! As usual, we are extremely careful with each expenditure, but such project remains expensive. The team will provide more than 50% of the budget, but we need your assistance to balance it. Please follow us on our web site: , Facebook , Twitter <@SaintBrandonDX>. 3C0, ANNOBON ISLAND (Update). After over 10 years of dreaming and 2 years of rigorous planning, we have turned a page. Our team is intact and ready. We have 17,000 pounds of equipment. It has been tested, sorted, inventoried and packed into our 40-foot sea container. We have discussed all conceivable contingencies, including rough seas, clouds and fog, high winds and emergencies at sea and on shore. We have studied propagation, maximized our location on the island, selected the best radio equipment, and have thought first and foremost of safety. All of this culminated when we sealed our sea container on October 9th, entered it into customs bond, placed it on a truck and watched it begin its journey to Punta Arenas, Chile. Our die has been cast. Now, a new chapter begins: one of reflection, waiting anxiously and hoping (praying) that all will go well from this point on. We have been blessed by the worldwide support of individual amateur radio operators, clubs and foundations. They have backed us, overwhelmingly. We are inspired by the support we have received, both financially and in spirit. We want to live up to all that is expected of us on this "gener- ational" DXpedition, which is likely the largest and most challenging DXpedition ---- ever. Indeed, there may never be another like it. We now have time to appreciate the responsibility that this project thrusts upon us. We feel it, and we will do our utmost to meet the DX world?s expecta- tions from Bouvet - the number 2 "most wanted" entity. You will start seeing band plans, more detailed propagation information, QSL information and more on our website. Our Facebook and Twitter social media outlets will keep their conversational tone, but shift their focus to how you can best work us, plus current events and news of interest. Our updated propagation forecasts continue to validate our predictions, as visualized on our website propagation page. Our team now has a singular focal point, King George Island, where the next chapter begins. We will meet our ship there on January 13th, and sail 2,200 miles to Bouvet. By departing from King George Island rather than Punta Arenas, we save about 400 miles of sea travel. This essentially gives us one or two more days on the air from Bouvet. We will savor those days, because they will give us QSOs that otherwise would not have been made. We have asked more from our team members than for any previous DXpedition. This includes their time, effort and money. We thank all of you who are helping to defray some of their costs. We continue to welcome new and additional support to help with these expenses. We are counting the days..... 73, Bob-K4UEE Ralph-K0IR Erling-LA6VM 4L, GEORGIA. NCDXF NEWS (Press Release, date October 16th). NCDXF announces major support for the KH1 Baker Island DXpedition [edited] -- The Northern California DX Foundation is pleased to announce it will be a major con- tributor to the KH1 Baker Island DXpedition planned for June 2018. Baker- Howland is #4 on the ClubLog Most Wanted List now, but will be #3 after the upcoming Bouvet DXpedition. In 2016, NCDXF-supported DXpeditions activated five of the ten most- needed entities. These DXpeditions put nearly 500,000 QSOs into DXer' logs! That year we spent $156,000 to fund these and other DXpeditions. It is possible that the Bouvet and Baker DXpeditions could add another 200,000 QSOs to that number! has details of the KH1 Baker DXpedition. DXpeditions to rare entities like Baker-Howland that are so remote are becoming more expensive, a trend that we believe will continue. NCDXF's primary purpose is to help fund well-organized DXpeditions to rare, difficult and expensive entities, like Baker Island. During the last 45 years, NCDXF has granted over $1.1 million to hundreds of DX- peditions ? helping to put an "all-time-new-one" (ATNO) in the log and make DX happen for thousands of DXers worldwide. The credit for these large grants goes to the NCDXF contributors, individuals and clubs who support the DX community. Without those contributions, DXpeditions to entities like Bouvet or other rare locations would not be possible. If you agree with the importance of NCDXF's work, and if you are not a current contributor, we hope you will become one today by clicking here: http://ncdxf.org/pages/join_renew.html Your contribution will continue to help make DX happen. You can also support future DXpeditions by including the NCDXF Cycle 25 Fund in your estate plan . We wish the KH1B team a safe and very successful trip to Baker Island next year. 73, Glenn Johnson, W0GJ NCDXF Vice President http://www.ncdxf.org ADDED NOTE: Also read "NCDXF Announces Major Support for Baker Island DXpedition" on the ARRL Web page at: http://www.arrl.org/news/view/ncdxf-announces-major-support-for-baker-island-dxpedition P4, ARUBA (Update). As this was being written on Wednesday, operators Yuris/YL2GM and Kaspars/YL3AIW have ended their 3C0L Annobon Island (AF-039) operation early October 25th, and were at the Annobon airport waiting for their departure back to Malabo. The update states, "Will see what's up in Malabo, as they have missed their flight home which was scheduled for October 23rd. 30000 QSOs in the log. They went QRT around 05:30 GMT to pack the remaining antennas and other stuff. If flight will be postponed again, they will put back the small vertical and continue." QSL via YL2GN direct or ClubLog's OQRS (direct or Bureau). Look for the logs to be uploaded to LoTW six months after their operations. Updates are being posted to: http://www.lral.lv/3c0l_3c1l LAST MINUTE UPDATE: October 26th [edited] -- "Plans regarding 3C1L have changed. Yuris and Kaspars are in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea, and Yuris says that they plan to continue as 3C1L. He is looking for proper QTH. But they are not QRV yet. It was a pirate playing on the air earlier this evening on 80m band. The spare 2nd K3 have arrived, but has not yet passed customs. They still haven't managed to get to the Internet to upload the logs. Date of flying home is not known yet. Regarding K3s - those who posted negative comments on DX-Cluster about failing K3s, please bear in mind the conditions they were being operated at 3C0 (jumping mains voltage 120-180 V). If you dare to test transceiver, or even better - two of them - of your beloved brand in similar conditions for about 12 days, then lets compare the results." 4S, SRI LANKA (Update/Reminder). OC-216/ (Update) Operators Mike/AB5EB, Mike/AD5A and Craig/VK5CE will OC-234. be active as VK9AR from Ashmore Reef between November 7-10th. Activity will be on 40-15 meters with three stations on the air at the same time; two with amps. QSL via VK5CW, direct or by the Bureau or ClubLog's OQRS. For more details and updates, see: https://ashmorereef.wordpress.com OCTOBER 25th: (UPDATE - de Craig/VK5CE -- One Week To Go) [edited] Mike/AB5EB, Mike/AD5A and Craig/VK5CE have all paid for the boat in full to Ashmore Reef, this was the most expensive component of the DXpedition. The boat has confirmed the dates and times of our journey. We depart Broome WA on the morning of Sunday November 5th. We arrive at Ashmore Reef around 0500 UTC or noon local time on Tuesday, November 7th. We hope to be on air as soon as we can in the afternoon, please be aware there is no infrastructure on the reef and we need to bring equipment via zodiac. The biggest issue is the weather with temperatures going to be over 35C and very humid. It?ll be slow going. We need to depart Ashmore Reef by 0100 UTC or 9am local on Saturday, November 11th. As we are only allowed to be on the island during dawn in the morning to dusk in the late afternoon/ early evening, it means our operating times are around 2100 to 1000 UTC. See the "PROPAGATION" page on our website to show you how to get in the log and where we will be. I spoke on the phone with the Commonwealth Government on Monday and the dawn to dusk rules still apply. If there are problems with tides or weather, then it may mean we are able to be on the island longer, but you can't rely on that happening. Prior to departing for OC-198 I freighted up some equipment to Broome that I didn't need for VK5CE/8 such as a Honda Generator, Dunestar band pass filters, etc. These have all arrived now. After the OC-198 DXpedition, on the way back when I reached Alice Springs I freighted the second Honda Generator to Broome and its currently in transit. This means we can have a high power SSB station, high power CW station and 100W SSB/CW station on the air at the same time. At the end of next week we all jump on a plane and meet up in Perth WA on Friday, November 3rd, and we are on the same flight up to Broome later that day. So not long now. On behalf of Mike Sr. and Mike Jr. and myself, we look forward to giving you another rare IOTA....hope- fully a few days after you also work those crazy rockhoppers in Liberia!!!! Cheers Craig LAST MINUTE UPDATE: Look for operators Mike/AB5EB, Mike/AD5A and Craig/VK5CE to conduct a quick 4 hour operation from Browse Island (OC-234) on their journey back to mainland Australia. It was activated only once before as VK6BM back in 2000 and is claimed by 10.2% of chasers. The trio will use the callsign VK9AR/6 around 2000 UTC on Saturday, November 11th. SA-078.
